Comparing the Present U.S. Electricity Grid to a Smart Grid System

Jubith Sadanandan, Charthamkudath 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The main focus of this thesis is to test a model that compares the present grid and a Smart Grid system. The thesis discusses the major issues faced by our electricity infrastructure and the possible solutions offered by the Smart Grid. Present grid limitations based on operational, technological, planning, and policy issues are covered. The thesis initially focuses on the limitations of our present grid, and describes severe limitations of our current grid during blackouts. The thesis outlines possible solutions for these problems offered by the concept of the Smart Grid, whose technology and features are described in detail. The thesis details Smart Grid technologies for power generation and the latest electronic devices available to aid the current aging power grid. Further, this thesis offers an analysis that compares the ‘present grid’ to a particular ‘Smart Grid’ configuration consisting of a Combined-Heat & Power (CHP) plant, a Photovoltaic system, and a Demand Response with real-time pricing. The analysis reveals the economic and operational benefit of the Smart Grid system under consideration.

Push-off Tests on Shear Studs with Hollow-cored Floor Slabs.

Lam, Dennis, Elliott, K.S., Nethercot, D.A. January 1998 (has links)
The shear capacity of headed studs in precast concrete hollow-core slab construction has been determined experimentally in 12 full-scale push-off tests. The tests were used to study the effects of the size of the gap between the ends of the precast slabs, and the amount of tie steel placed transversely across the joint, and the strength of concrete infill. Under certain situations the capacity of the stud is reduced compared with that in a solid reinforced concrete slab. Maximum resistances are compared with the predictions of BS 5950 and EC4, and a reduction formula for the precast effect is derived.

Towards the formalisation of use case maps

Dongmo, Cyrille 11 1900 (has links)
Formal specification of software systems has been very promising. Critics against the end results of formal methods, that is, producing quality software products, is certainly rare. Instead, reasons have been formulated to justify why the adoption of the technique in industry remains limited. Some of the reasons are: • Steap learning curve; formal techniques are said to be hard to use. • Lack of a step-by-step construction mechanism and poor guidance. • Difficulty to integrate the technique into the existing software processes. Z is, arguably, one of the successful formal specification techniques that was extended to Object-Z to accommodate object-orientation. The Z notation is based on first-order logic and a strongly typed fragment of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. Some attempts have been made to couple Z with semi-formal notations such as UML. However, the case of coupling Object-Z (and also Z) and the Use Case Maps (UCMs) notation is still to be explored. A Use Case Map (UCM) is a scenario-based visual notation facilitating the requirements definition of complex systems. A UCM may be generated either from a set of informal requirements, or from use cases normally expressed in natural language. UCMs have the potential to bring more clarity into the functional description of a system. It may furthermore eliminate possible errors in the user requirements. But UCMs are not suitable to reason formally about system behaviour. In this dissertation, we aim to demonstrate that a UCM can be transformed into Z and Object-Z, by providing a transformation framework. Through a case study, the impact of using UCM as an intermediate step in the process of producing a Z and Object-Z specification is explored. The aim is to improve on the constructivity of Z and Object-Z, provide more guidance, and address the issue of integrating them into the existing Software Requirements engineering process. / Computer Science / M. Quelques propositions pour la comparaison de partitions non strictes / Some proposals for comparison of soft partitions

Quéré, Romain 06 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to the problem of comparing two soft (fuzzy/ probabilistic, possibilistic) partitions of a same set of individuals into several clusters. Its solution stands on the formal definition of concordance measures based on the principles of historical measures developped for comparing strict partitions and can be used invarious fields such as biology, image processing and clustering. Depending on whether they focus on the observation of the relations between the individuals described by each partition or on the quantization of the similarities between the clusters composing those partitions, we distinguish two main families for which the very notion of concordance between partitions differs, and we propose to characterize their representatives according to a same set of formal and informal properties. From that point of view, the measures are also qualified according to the nature of the compared partitions. A study of the multiple constructions on which the measures of the literature lie completes our taxonomy. We propose three new soft comparison measures taking benefits of the state of art. The first one is an extension of a strict approach, while the two others lie on native approaches, one individual-wise oriented, the other cluster-wise, both specifically defined to compare soft partitions. Our propositions are compared to the existing measures of the literature according to a set of experimentations chosen to cover the various issues of the problem. The given results clearly show how relevant our measures are. Finally we open new perspectives by proposing the premises of a new framework unifying most of the individual-wise oriented measures.

Comparing Online English Language Learning and Face-to-Face English Language Learning at El Bosque University in Colombia

Montiel-Chamorro, Marta L 01 January 2018 (has links)
Although there is significant research surrounding online foreign language education, there are still questions on whether the outcomes are comparable to those obtained in the traditional face-to-face classroom. This study examined four classes, two online and two face-to-face, where students took the second course of a 6-level program of English as a Second Language at El Bosque University in Colombia. The International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) was administered to students before classes started in order to establish a baseline, and then again after the courses finished. This test evaluates English language proficiency per skill: speaking, listening, reading, writing and also presents an overall proficiency score and level. Variables such as socioeconomic strata, students’ age, instructors, previous experience with online courses, course completion, student satisfaction and attendance and time on course were also examined. Because not all online students completed all content of the course within the timeframe given, special attention was given to this variable. Results indicate that when comparing the scores of only the online students who completed all the content of the course with those of their face-to-face counterparts, there are no statistically significant differences in the outcomes of any of the four skills nor there is a difference in the overall scores; however this brings up the issue of time investment as it seems to vary based upon instructional method. A qualitative component was used to support the findings in this study. This component included instructors’ interviews, an end-of-course qualitative survey and class observations.
