The influence of industry concentration on Merger & Acquisition decisionsUtz, Andrea January 2016 (has links)
While previous research has primarily focused on post-Merger & Acquisition (M&A) effects, influential factors, which trigger cross-border M&A transactions and whether the level of industry concentration play a key role in making the decision, have been largely neglected in research. This study aims to close this gap in research and investigates the influence of industry concentration on cross-border M&A decisions, including effects of profitability and corporate governance. The studied sample consists of 1105 companies across 48 countries, whereas 533 undertook cross-border M&A transactions across 40 countries. A logistic regression was used to predict the probability of cross-border M&A transactions. The study analyzed the effects on both the complete sample and on M&A companies only. The results indicate that large companies are more likely to undertake cross-border M&A with companies from a different industry in order to spread their level of risk. However, MNCs, which undertake transactions, are less likely to perform more transactions within one year. Over the time of observation the analysis revealed that market share did not change and thus, industries are not getting more concentrated in general, indicating that markets remain competitive. Multinational companies (MNCs), which have a higher market position and are more profitable, are less likely to undertake corporate restructuring, which was partially supported in this analysis. For both samples the findings do not support that the interaction between industry concentration and corporate governance have an influence on cross-border M&A. These findings increase the understanding of the role of industry concentration, profitability and corporate governance and that they do not play a crucial role in making cross-border M&A decisions.

Effect of pH on the structure and function of La Crosse virusWang, Guo-Ji, 1953- January 1989 (has links)
The La Crosse (LAC) virus is a member of the California encephalitis group of bunyaviridae (Porterfield et al., 1975 and 1976). It is one of an envelope virus and this virus under acidic conditions (below pH 6.3) has been demonstrated to result in cell-to-cell fusion (Gonzalez-Scarano, 1984). The LAC virus is also capable of forming virus-to-virus fusion particles. The focus of this thesis is the analysis of the structure and function of this virus-to-virus fusion by cryo-electron microscopy at different pH and temperatures. The results of this study provide the basis for further study of the structure and function of the LAC virus. The virus-to-virus fusion event shows a dependence on both pH and temperature. The frequency of the fusion event increases with an elevation in temperature (in the range 4 to 37°C) and with a decrease in pH from 7.3 to 5.4. The process of virus-to-virus fusion gives rise to the formation budding to a chain of fused viruses.

COINCIDENCE DETECTION OF PROTONS AND METASTABLE HYDROGEN ATOMS FROM DISSOCIATIVE IONIZATION OF MOLECULAR HYDROGEN BY ELECTRON IMPACT (TIME-OF-FLIGHT).CHO, HYUCK. January 1985 (has links)
A coincidence has been observed between H(2S) and H⁺ fragments resulting from the bombardment of H₂ with 100 eV electrons. A significant source of this coincidence is believed to be the 2sσ(g) state of H₂⁺. The time-of-flight (TOF) distribution of H(2S) fragments from the 2sσ(g) state was measured and converted to the kinetic energy distribution from which the potential energy of the 2sσ(g) state in the Franck-Condon region was constructed. The result is in good agreement with a published calculation.

Development of a New Microporous Filter Method for the Concentration of Viruses from WaterIkner, Luisa January 2010 (has links)
Waterborne enteric viruses are transmitted via the fecal-oral route and have been isolated from various types of water ranging from sewage to tap water. Water matrices characterized by low levels of organic material (e.g. clean surface water and tap water) contain fewer numbers of viruses than sewage and wastewater effluents. A number of methods have been developed to concentrate, elute (recover), and re-concentrate viruses from water. The goal of this dissertation is two-fold. An extensive review of the literature is provided in Appendix A that focuses on method development in the three aforementioned areas. A review of this detail has not been conducted in over two decades, and as such will contribute to the fields of water quality and environmental virology. Second, a novel and inexpensive method for the concentration of viruses (MS2 coliphage, poliovirus 1, echovirus 1, Coxsackievirus B5, and adenovirus 2) is presented in Appendix B. The method uses a new electropositive filter (comprised of nanoalumina fibers) for the capture of viruses from 20-L volumes of dechlorinated tap water. Average filter retention efficiencies for each of the viruses was ≥ 99%. Viruses that are adsorbed to filters must then be recovered (eluted). A number of inorganic solutions were evaluated for this purpose, the most effective being a moderately alkaline (pH 9.3) glycine buffered-polyphosphate solution. Secondary reconcetration of the eluates was performed using an optimized ultrafiltration method (Centricon Plus-70, Millipore, Billerica, MA), and achieved final concentrates volumes of 3.3 ± 0.3 mL. Total method efficiencies meeting the project recovery goal of ≥ 50% were obtained for each of the tested viruses except for MS2 coliphage at high input titers (45 ± 15%) and adenovirus 2 (14 ± 4%). Appendix C provides the Standard Operating Procedures, sample calculations, and detailed data for the experiments conducted. Appendix D details the steps taken towards optimizing the secondary concentration procedure in effort to meet the 50% recovery goal.

Concentration Quenching Effect in Rare-earth Doped GlassesXia, Chun, Xia, Chun January 2017 (has links)
Concentration quenching effect in ytterbium (Yb) and neodymium (Nd) doped phosphate glasses, thulium (Tm) doped germanate glass, and praseodymium (Pr) doped tellurite glass were studied. The fluorescence and lifetime of these rare-earth doped glasses with different concentrations were measured. Ion pair and clustering are included in the model to explain the quenching effect occurring in highly doped glasses. This study will help us in designing and fabricating high unit gain optical fibers.
