The development of high performance dynamic random access memory (DRAM) based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure made it necessary to replace the conventional silicon dioxide layer by dielectric materials with high dielectric constants. The use of these so-called high-k insulators allows aggressive scaling of DRAM devices while keeping high capacitance density and, more importantly, low leakage current. Among the numerous high k dielectrics, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most attractive candidate due to its rather high dielectric constant (k). Rutile TiO2 is the interesting phase due to its high dielectric constant and the possibility to deposit this phase at low temperature by ALD (< 250 °C) by using RuO2 substrate thanks to a very small lattice mismatch between the two materials. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the surface chemical reactions mechanisms at the RuO2/TiO2 interface and their influence on the ALD TiO2 film properties, especially the influence of oxidizing species, namely, H2O or O2 plasma. The influence of bottom and top electrode on electrical and structural proprieties of TiO2 MIM structure was also studied. Then, the dielectric constant, the ac conductivity and the loss tangent of aluminum doped titanium oxide are measured through a wide band frequency range, from 1 Hz to 2 GHz. Finally, the feasibility of three-dimensional (3D) MIM structures was studied by using dense array of truncated conical holes etched in a silicon substrate. The 3D MIM capacitors showed a large increase in the capacitance density while retaining very good electrical properties especially a leakage current comparable to planar MIM devices.

Single-molecule fluorescence microscopy studies of DNA-surface interactions on chemically graded organosilane surfacesLi, Zi January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Chemistry / Daniel A. Higgins / This dissertation describes the application of wide-field single-molecule fluorescence microscopy techniques to investigations of DNA-surface interactions on chemically graded organosilane surfaces. The adsorption and desorption behaviors of double-stranded (ds) plasmid DNA along the amino-trimethoxysilane and octyl-trichlorosilane gradients were explored as a function of solution pH, solution ionic strength and surface properties. The results provide an improved fundamental understanding of DNA interactions with different surfaces and are certain to aid in the development and advancement of DNA-based biological and biomedical devices. Three distinct experiments were performed in completion of the work for this dissertation.
In the first study, total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy was employed to study DNA interactions with aminosilane gradient surfaces under relatively acidic and basic environments. Electrical potentials were applied to assist DNA adsorption and desorption. The single-molecule data clearly showed that DNA capture and release was achieved on the monolayer and submonolayer coated regions of the aminosilane gradient surface under relatively basic pH conditions, with the help of an electrical potential. Meanwhile, DNA adsorption was found to be quasi-reversible on the multilayers at the high aminosilane end of the gradient in the relatively acidic solution. The results of these studies demonstrate the importance of manipulating the electrostatic interactions of DNA with charged surfaces in order to achieve DNA capture and release. The fundamental knowledge of the DNA-surface interactions gained in these studies will be helpful in diverse fields ranging from the layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolyte-based thin films to the selective electronic sensing of charged biomolecules.
In the second study, the local dielectric properties of the least polar environments in dsDNA were assessed by using the solvatochromic dye, nile red, as a polarity-sensitive probe. TIRF spectroscopic imaging methods were employed in these studies. Although the dielectric constant within the least polar regions of dsDNA was previously predicted by theoretical and computational methods, no experimental measurements of its value had been reported to date. The results provide important knowledge of the factors governing the polarity of DNA microenvironments to which intercalators bind, and provide vital experimental support for the values determined in computational studies.
In the third study, TIRF microscopy and single molecule tracking methods were employed to study DNA interactions with an opposed two-component C8-silane and aminosilane gradient surface as a function of solution pH. The mobility of surface-adsorbed DNA molecules was explored and quantified in these studies. The preliminary results further demonstrated the importance of electrostatic interactions over hydrophobic interactions in governing the adsorption of DNA to surfaces. The mobility of surface-adsorbed DNA was found to be largely independent of position along the two-component gradient. These studies were originally undertaken as a route to observation of cooperative effects that are believed to govern DNA-surface binding. Unfortunately, no clear evidence of cooperative effects was observed at the mixed regions of the two-component gradient surface.

Axion dark matter and two-neutrino double electron capture searches in the Large Underground Xenon experimentMarzioni, Maria Francesca January 2018 (has links)
The hunt for Dark Matter plays a truly critical role in contemporary physics. At both the largest and smallest scales, deep questions are being raised about the fundamental nature of the universe - questions that confirmation and then characterisation of particle dark matter will provide many answers to. This thesis presents some of the world's most sensitive searches to date for certain types of axion dark matter, axion-like particles, and two-neutrino double electron capture. These have been conducted using the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment. Evidence for dark matter and physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics is described in Chapter 1, while Chapter 2 gives an overview of proposed candidates for particle dark matter. The various experimental approaches being used to detect particle dark matter are presented in Chapter 3. Direct detection with time projection chambers plays a major role in this thesis, with particular interest in the LUX detector, that is described in its components and operations. Chapter 4 presents LUX direct searches for weakly interacting massive particles. Although I have contributed to these analyses, they are included for completeness only, as they are not part of my central work. The LUX collaboration's searches for axion dark matter and axion-like particle have delivered world-leading results on the axion-electron coupling constant. These results, that I personally led and which have been published in Physics Review Letters, are presented in Chapter 5, along with sensitivity studies, also led by me, made for the future LUX-ZEPLIN experiment. Finally, a search for two-neutrino double electron capture of 124Xe, that I performed using LUX data to extract a limit on the half life of the process, is presented in Chapter 6. Although being allowed by the Standard Model, two-neutrino double electron capture shares the matrix element calculation framework with the neutrinoless channel of the same process, becoming of great interest in the scope of neutrino physics. Conclusions follow and close the thesis.

The aim of this thesis is the study of two topical issues arising from general relativity: finding initial data for the Cauchy problem with respect to the Einstein equations and the positive mass theorem. For the first issue, in the context of the conformal method introduced by Lichnerowicz [Lichnerowicz, 1944], Y. Choquet-Bruhat–J. York [Choquet-Bruhat et York, 1980] and Y. Choquet-Bruhat–J. Isenberg–D. Pollack [Choquet-Bruhat et al., 2007a], we consider the conformal constraint equations on compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension n > 3. In this thesis, we simplify the proof of [Dahl et al., 2012, Theorem 1.1], extend and sharpen the far-from CMC result proven by Holst– Nagy–Tsogtgerel [Holst et al., 2009], Maxwell [Maxwell, 2009] and give an unifying viewpoint of these results. Besides discussing the solvability of the conformal constraint equations, we will also show nonexistence and nonuniqueness results for solutions to the conformal constraint equations under certain assumptions.

Previous issue date: 2009 / Dielectric resonators based on type structure compound Bi3TiNbO9 show singular characteristics for microwave applications, including high dielectric constants, low dissipation losses and low temperature coefficients. Single phase of the Bi3TiNbO9 powder was obtained by x-ray diffraction technique. The ceramics doped during manufacture, with lead oxide and bismuth oxide, were synthesized by solid state reaction at 950°C for two hours. Samples were analysed by Archimedes method and exhibited good levels of density for doped ceramics with bismuth and lead oxide. Grain morphology and stoichiometry of ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy technique. Far infrared spectroscopy identified large bands on the Bi3TiNbO9 structure by attenuated total reflection technique. Radiofrequency measurements showed that doped ceramics exhibited higher dielectric constants than pure phase. Microwave measurements were investigated by Hakki-Coleman and resonant cylindrical cavity. The ceramics called as BTNO3BiP, BTNO5BiP, BTNO10BiP, BTNO3PbG e BTNO5PbG, showed high dielectric constants and high quality factors demonstrating that they can be applied in dielectric antennas on microwave range.
