Výpočetní simulace přenosu zvukových signálů lidským uchem / Simulation of the sound transfer via human ear

Hájek, Petr January 2014 (has links)
The presented thesis concerns the biomechanics of hearing. The main aim of this work is the determination of so called corrections which allow for the comparison of synthetic audiograms and measured audiograms. With these corrections we attempt to overcome the discrepancy that exists between the computational modelling and audiological measurement. The discrepancy lies in a fact that the computational modelling usually simulates the sound coming from a free eld to the external auditory canal, while audiological measurement is realized by audiological headphones, whether the auditory system is healthy or injured. Then corrections adjust the computational model so that the obtained result is comparable to audiological measurement. In this work is also addressed the influence of stapes kinematics to the excitation of basilar membrane. The movement of stapes consists of piston-like movement and rocking movement. The computational simulation shows which movement is more signicant for the excitation of basilar membrane and how this effect can be used in otosurgery, in particular, for type IV of tympanoplasty.

Utveckling av Key Performance Indicators genom underhållstrategi för processindustrin / Development of Key Performance Indicators through maintenance strategy for the process industry

Arif, Safin January 2019 (has links)
The following thesis work has been carried out as a case study at BillerudKorsnäs together with a literature study which has given rise to the theoretical frame of reference which fundamentally laid the foundation for the Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) measurement structure designed for the company. Furthermore, data collection in the form of internal and external benchmarking together with document studies, semi-structured interviews and structured observations has been carried out in order to get a complete view of the current situation as possible in accordance with the guidelines for scientific research approach. The research covers the subject area of maintenance technology and aims to map the maintenance strategy to be able to design a (KPI’s) measurement structure for BillerudKorsnäs maintenance organization. The thesis then gives rise to the analysis section which, with the support of the theoretical frame of reference, describes the improvement proposals and future recommendations to elucidate world-class maintenance and reliability. The study presents maintenance operations based on Swedish standards and “leading and lagging” measurement structure as a scientific basis. This has resulted in a defined metric structure with key performance measures for a maintenance organization where the maintenance strategy is connected to the company's vision and strategy. The question linked to the problem formulation permeates the research and is about explaining how to link to the maintenance strategy and describing which KPIs are to be reported, in order to create an efficient and productive maintenance organization that functions in accordance to the maintenance goals set on BillerudKorsnäs- Sulfatfabrik. The results of the conducted research show that the KPI- structure has not been established in accordance with BillerudKorsnäs' maintenance strategy at a cooperation level, furthermore, the key figures do not show an effect metric relevant to the maintenance operations and the factory management. The proposed improvement proposal proposes a new KPI- structure that provides measurability to the industrial maintenance operation and is symmetrical with BillerudKorsnäs vision and strategy for "Best working methods" in world-class maintenance and reliability.

Formative Feedback in EFL Writing : An Analysis of Students' Utilization of Feedback During the Writing Process / Formativ återkoppling vid skrivning i engelska som andra språk : En analys av elevers användande av återkoppling i skrivprocessen

Al-kefagy, Murtadha, Nagy, Cristina January 2022 (has links)
The study aims to examine (1) the extent to which EFL learners in upper secondary school use feedback comments from teachers and peers to revise their texts and how the usage patterns vary by type of feedback approach, (2) how the students use feedback to revise their texts and how the usage patterns vary by type of feedback approach, and (3) What positive or negative effects the type of feedback approach has on students’ revisions. Moreover, the study aims to investigate the extent the type of feedback approach affects students’ usage patterns in their revisions. The findings will provide a basis for discussions about the possible qualities of written feedback that could be included to help students improve their writing skills. Content analysis of 28 argumentative essays written by first-year upper secondary students in Sweden is used to identify the type of feedback provided by teachers and peers and the type of revisions made by the students. Using the identified types of feedback and revisions, a text analysis was adopted to examine the frequency of feedback and revisions, and how students used it to revise their text. Furthermore, the results are presented and compared to different relevant studies (e.g., Baker, 2016; Lee; 2008) and theories such as Krashen's (1985) input hypothesis and Swain's (2005) output hypothesis, to draw some insights into the effects of feedback on students' revisions. The results show that students utilized corrective feedback on the micro level more than the macro level – especially indirect corrective feedback on the micro level. The students used most of the feedback to revise their errors on the micro level such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation; however, a few revisions were made on the macro level where students improved their text by restructuring their arguments and ideas. Finally, the findings indicate that formative feedback had a positive effect on students' revisions both on the macro and micro level where students improved the coherence and cohesion of their texts in the final draft. Therefore, if formative feedback is applied in the appropriate context, it may help students develop their writing abilities.

Investigating Corrective Instructional Activities for Secondary-Level Students Within Mastery Learning Environments

Root, Scott 01 January 2015 (has links)
This applied dissertation was designed to provide a better understanding of the effectiveness of out-of-class safety net corrective instructional activity practices conducted beyond regular classroom instruction for lower secondary level (9th- and 10th- grade high school) students within mastery learning educational environments. The study was designed to shed light on the impact and implications of these practices on Bloom’s vanishing point (Bloom, 1971) and Arlin’s leveling effect (Arlin & Westbury, 1976). Seven mastery learning structured international schools in geographic proximity, of similar size, and utilizing the same program of study were used in this study. Three of the schools that employed a safety net program were the basis of this study, and the four schools that did not have in place a safety net program were used as a control for this observational research. Normed Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) RIT scores (Northwest Evaluation Association, 2005), grade point averages, and safety net program data were used in a series of case-control tests to determine the effectiveness of out-of-class corrective instructional activity safety net programs for above-average and below-average achieving students. The mean study and control group RIT percentile ranking scores for the students was nearly 1 standard deviation above the averages reported by the Northwest Evaluation Association (2005), so these relative comparisons involved bright students. This large volume of data enabled analysis of the effects of out-of-class safety net activities on school-wide and individual improvement in literature, writing, mathematics, and comprehensive results. Series of conclusive nonparametric analysis were used instead of normal distribution tests because of the out-of-bounds skewed nature of the data. Analysis of the data suggested that safety netting programs benefit all students, irrespective of whether or not students received out-of-class corrective instructional activities. The MAP RIT scores of below- average achieving students were not affected by attending a school with a safety net program but their GPA results improved in all subjects. Arlin’s leveling effect (Arlin & Westbury, 1976) most likely accounted for improvement of MAP RIT scores for above- average students who attended a school with a safety net program but their GPA results were not affected. These contrasting benefits masked the school-wide test results, which suggested that a school district might not realize an overall increase in MAP RIT and GPA results when adopting a safety net program. Students identified in need of safety netting services benefited by having been placed in the program up to twice in any respective course, but a point of diminishing returns was reached when a student fell 3 or more units behind in a course in relation to the progress of the class.

Three-dimensional image analysis for quantification of tooth movements and landmark changes

Li, Shuning 11 December 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Quantification of treatment outcomes (tooth displacement and bony changes) is the key to advance orthodontic research and improve clinical practices. Traditionally, treatment outcome were quantified by using two-dimensional (2D) cephalometric analysis. However, there are problems inherent in 2D analysis, such as tracing errors and inability to detect side-effects. Thus, a reliable three-dimensional (3D) image analysis method for treatment outcome quantification is of high interest. Systematic 3D image analysis methods were developed for digital dental cast models and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) models. A typical analysis procedure includes image reconstruction, landmarks identification, coordinate system setup, superimposition, and displacement or change calculation. The specified procedures for maxillary teeth displacements and anatomical landmarks movements were presented and validated. The validation results showed that these procedures were accurate and reliable enough for clinical applications. The 3D methods were first applied to a human canine retraction clinical study. The purposes of this study were to quantify canines and anchorage tooth movements, and to compare two commonly used canine retraction strategies, controlled tipping and translation. The canine results showed that (1) canine movements were linear with time; (2) the initial load system was not the only factor that controlled the canine movement pattern; and (3) control tipping was significantly faster than translation. The anchorage tooth results showed that (1) anchorage losses occurred even with transpalatal arch (TPA); (2) there was no significant difference in anchorage loss between the two treatment strategies; and (3) compared with removable TPA, fixed TPA appliance can significantly reduce the amount of anchorage loss in the mesial-distal direction. The second clinical application for the 3D methods was a mandibular growth clinical trial. The purposes of this study were to quantify skeletal landmark movements, and compare two widely used appliances, Herbst and MARA. The results showed that (1) the Herbst appliance caused mandibular forward movement with backward rotation; and (2) the treatment effects had no significant differences by using either Herbst or MARA appliances. The two clinical applications validated the methods developed in this study to quantify orthodontic treatment outcomes. They also demonstrated the benefits of using the 3D methods to quantify orthodontic treatment outcomes and to test fundamental hypotheses. These 3D methods can easily be extended to other clinical cases. This study will benefit orthodontic patients, clinicians and researchers.

Implementation av underhållsstrategi på ett vattenreningsverk : Underhåll av svamp- och bakterietankar / Implementation of Maintenance Strategy at Water Treatment Plants : Maintenance of Fungi and Bacterial Tanks

Vuksanovic, Aleksander, Gajic, Marko January 2020 (has links)
Today, there is not enough maintenance on the 15 fungal and bacterial tanks found at AstraZeneca's wastewater treatment plant in Gärtuna, Södertälje. The company uses a maintenance strategy where they wait for the tanks to fail and then fix them. The treatment plant wants to create a maintenance strategy for the tanks by finding out if the life span can be extended or if, and if so, when the equipment needs to be renovated, upgraded, or replaced. With literature studies maintenance strategies, wastewater treatment plants and various condition investigations, were analysed. The visits were made to get a better idea of how the work at the wastewater treatment plant looks like today. Interviews were held with the head of the water treatment plant, an experienced operating technician and two external companies working on maintenance. The result shows information about what errors occurred, what measures were taken and what it cost. It also shows how maintenance can be done with various external sources and costs for this. Two different condition investigations, digital x-ray scanning and penetrant testing are suggested to detect errors in the tanks. After analysing the results, conclusions about a new maintenance strategy could be drawn. Recommendations on how it can be implemented, and an appropriate interval have been developed. AstraZeneca should go from corrective to scheduled condition-based maintenance, where condition investigations are performed every three, four or five years depending on the staff's assessment and they could make use of external sources when it comes to washing and condition investigations of the tanks. Corrective maintenance is impossible to plan and our solution will minimize this. Scheduled condition-based maintenance that we recommend will result in a much simpler planning where unexpected costs as well as unexpected downtime will be avoided. Regular maintenance will probably result in an increase in the service life of the tanks, which contributes to better durability and they will not have to buy new tanks.

Political Dimensions of Climate Change Adaptation : Framing Financial Attributes in Pakistan / Klimatanpassningens politiska dimensioner : Inramning av finansiella attribut i Pakistan

Sherazi, Anusha Batool January 2020 (has links)
The interest towards climate change adaptation has gradually increased from local tointernational levels around the globe. This is one reason that there is less than the dueattention paid previously, on its implementation, besides relatively lower levels offunding available for the adaptation related activities. To elaborate on the trickyrelationship between adaptation funding and policy priorities in the global South, thisthesis focuses on the case of Pakistan. Pakistan is one of the most climate changesprone countries with several events of climate change related disasters taking place onan annual basis. However, there is an extremely weak mechanism of climate changeadaptation that could help the vulnerable communities to resist the disaster impacts. The respective study findings suggest that the primary cause of this issue is the lack ofan effective climate change policy. The existing National Climate Change Policy ofPakistan (NCCP), is not a living document at this point, that can address the climatechange adaptation issues. The existing policy was not only drafted by the fundingagencies themselves, who enabled the formulation of the policy, but it was alsoproposed before the 18th constitutional amendment in the country, which producedsignificant changes. Since the 18th amendment (2010), the implementation of theadaptation policy has been affected due to the change in administrative power andauthority levels, from national to provincial. Another important aspect which isassociated with the adaptation of climate change is the politics behind the funding thatmay enter the country from international sources. The national policy does not provideany comprehensive guideline for the funding agencies regarding the adaptationpriorities, vulnerability and adaptive capacity of the locals, or the organization of funds atvarious scales. This leads the international funding agencies to lose their trust in thegovernment; and lead these agencies to set up their own channels for enabling thefunds to implement the projects on climate change adaptation or mitigation. Similarly, the lack of interest for the national government towards adaptation activities furtherdeviates the flow of funds into adaptation actions, and the focus remains overmitigation. This master’s thesis adopted the in-depth case study research strategy, andsemi structured interviews were conducted with 23 climate change experts, including2but not limited to policy makers and international organizations staff. The results of thestudy were organized in four major focused areas including, a) priorities in adaptation,b) actors of adaptation, c) question of scales, and d) vulnerability and adaptive capacityof the affected communities. This study concludes that climate change adaptation is aneglected topic in Pakistan, and the mishandling of adaptation funds, under the weakpolicy guidelines, end up in maladaptation.
