With regard to their fragmentary nature, there is a need to make use of comparative material. Informations about other Indo-European gods and beings from Slavic folklore similar to Veles are used as well. The purpose is not only to understand isolated functions, but also connections between them. This seems as the best way how to gain the idea of the whole character of Veles as the Slavs before Christianity could see it.

This work is focused on the conceptions involving the disorder and chaos in the re- ligion of the ancient Egypt. The basic ground was Jiří Janák's text Chaos a ne-řád ve starám Egyptě (Chaos and Disorder in Ancient Egypt), that was published in colle- ction Řád a chaos v archaických kulturách. This text presented the foundation, that could be evolved further through studying of another author's attitudes (for example J. Assmann, E. Hornung, H. Smith, H. Te Velde) and reflection of ancient writings (Pyramid Texts, Book of Dead, Amduat, Book of Gates etc.). A larger scope was gi- ven to the question of preexistence of chaos, its manifestations and interferences in the created cosmos. Further, I dealt with the problem of origin of order (maat) en- dangering forces - origin of Apophis and disorder (isfet) and impact of this forces on the life and afterlife of an individual. Outside the created world, there is the primeval ocean. It was personified by the god Nun. It is inactive, but, in spite of it, it can be a threat for the universe - every- thing could be destructed in its waters. Thesis (DLitt)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation looks at the reception of Gen. 1-3, one of the most controversial parts in the
Hebrew Bible. How was it interpreted by the Nguni speaking communities (e.g. Xhosa, Zulu,
siSwazi and siNdebele) taking into consideration their background, culture and religious
belief system?
The reception approach is followed in the research because of its emphasis on the role of the
reader in understanding texts. Sources that are utilized are Nguni Bible translations, selected
preached sermons (which the researcher attended himself), Nguni stories and folk tales and
reviews undertaken among selected Nguni groups.
A close-reading of the texts under discussion is undertaken in order to determine the basic
content and issues of interpretation involved. The central concepts of cosmogony as
contained in Gen. 1-2 are studied, as well as the story of the Garden of Eden and the
concept of the “fall” in Gen. 3.
The map of the Nguni language group is described and the culture and belief system of the
Nguni speaking communities. Central concepts to this belief system are the worship of
ancestors, marriage, circumcision, and among the Swazis the incwala (annual national feast)
Legends and folk tales were used as sources for the Nguni belief system. It was determined
that the Nguni speaking people worshipped one God in their traditional way, but always
through their ancestors as a sign of respect.
The role of the missionaries is analyzed by describing the history of the various missionary
societies and their influence on the Nguni peoples. A very short discussion is devoted to
preached sermons by Nguni pastors in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.Bible translations have always played a very important role among Nguni speakers (both
Christians and non-believers). The need for translations using understandable contemporary
terms is emphasized. This is the challenge to the Bible societies and Bible translators.
Qualitative reviews were undertaken under selected Nguni speaking groups (Xhosa, Zulu,
siSwati and siNdebele). Some of the results obtained from these reviews (full transcripts are
included) are:
(1) that there is a common understanding of the origin of the universe between the
Hebrew Bible and the Nguni religious culture.
(2) Serpent (Gen. 3): among the Zulus this concept is understood in terms of sexuality,
but it can also be linked with the ancestors.
(3) Both communities (Hebrew Bible and the Nguni) were tainted with the concept and
ideology of patriarchalism.
The crucial question in the research was: “what happens when a cosmogonic myth is
transferred from one community to another?” In the case of Gen. 1-3 an ancient Hebrew text
was transmitted to African cultures via missionaries and Bible translations. Nguni people
react differently. Whereas some accept Gen. 1-3 (cosmogonies and the “fall”) as a detailed
explanation of how creation and the “fall” came about, others reject it. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie proefskrif kyk na die resepsie van Gen. 1-3, een van die mees kontroversiële dele in
die Hebreeuse Bybel. Hoe word dit geïnterpreteer deur die Ngunisprekende gemeenskappe
(Xhosas, Zoeloes, Swazi’s en Ndebele-groepe), met inagneming van hulle agtergrond,
kultuur en stelsel van godsdienstige oortuigings?
Die resepsiebenadering word in hierdie navorsing gevolg weens die klem op die rol van die
leser in hoe tekste verstaan word. Die bronne wat aangewend is, is Ngunibybelvertalings,
geselekteerde preke (wat die navorser self bygewoon het), Ngunistories en -volksverhale, en
onderhoude wat met geselekteerde Ngunigroepe gevoer is.
'n In-dieptestudie van die betrokke tekste is onderneem ten einde die basiese inhoud en
interpretasiekwessies te bepaal. Die sentrale konsep van kosmogonie, soos vervat in Gen. 1-

Zoeloes, Swazi’s en Ndebele-groepe). Resultate wat verkry is van hierdie evaluerings
(waarvan volledige transkripsies voorsien word) sluit in:
(1) dat daar 'n gemeenskaplike begrip is van die oorsprong van die heelal by die
Hebreeuse Bybel en die Ngunigeloofskultuur;
(2) dat die konsep van die slang (Gen. 3) onder die Zoeloes in terme van seksualiteit
verstaan word, maar dat dit ook met die voorvaders in verband gebring kan word; en
(3) dat beide gemeenskappe (Hebreeuse Bybel en die Nguni) tekens dra van die konsep
en ideologie van patriargisme.
Die kernvraag in die navorsing was: “Wat gebeur wanneer ’n kosmogoniese mite oorgedra
word van een gemeenskap na 'n ander?”. In die geval van Gen. 1-3 is 'n ou Hebreeuse teks
oorgedra na Afrikakulture via sendelinge en bybelvertalings. Ngunimense reageer
verskillend. Waar sommige Gen. 1-3 aanvaar (kosmogonieë en die “sondeval”) as 'n
gedetailleerde verduideliking van hoe die skepping en die “sondeval” plaasgevind het, word
dit deur ander verwerp.

Previous issue date: 2006-08-01 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / This research intended to enable us to deepen our knowledge of the identity of the Adventist being. The general objective of this work was to organize a field of knowledge related to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, through its health standard which is a reflex of its cosmogony, aiming to the depth of the Adventist identity. To this end, it describes the rising of the church among the social reform and American religious revivals of the eighteen century. Introduces Ellen G. White, the charismatic character accept by the emerging group as having the Gift of Prophecy, co-founder of the church and defender of a peculiar health standard, based on her explicit visions. Health is discussed within the Adventist cosmogony: its therapeutic values and theological basis; compared to the holistic standard defended by Capra to the Adventist White s standard. Finally, the analysis was based on the anthropological theory of illness, by François Laplantine, answering the questions related the identity of being Adventist which is recognized by a number of health related advises, that guide not only the practical life, but also the religious life of its followers. Such guidelines form the Adventist religiosity, together with the eminent religious elements which base the daily behavior of the individuals. This work was built on bibliographic research enclosing the areas of health, religion, sociology and anthropology, through which were studied the concept of health, illness and cosmogony. / O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender como os estudos da saúde no Adventismo permitem aprofundamentos na identidade do ser Adventista. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi organizar um campo de conhecimento que se refere à Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia, através de seu modelo de saúde que é reflexo de sua cosmovisão. Assim, o trabalho descreveu o surgimento da Igreja em meio às reformas sociais e reavivamentos religiosos americanos do século dezoito. Apresentou Ellen White, a personagem carismática aceita pelo grupo em formação e detentora do Dom da profecia, co-fundadora da Igreja e defensora de um modelo de saúde peculiar, a partir de suas declaradas visões. Discutiu, também, a saúde na cosmovisão Adventista: seus valores terapêuticos e fundamentos teológicos; comparou os modelos holístico defendido por Capra e o Adventista whiteano. Finalmente, fundamentou-se na teoria da Antropologia da Doença de François Laplantine respondendo as questões relacionadas à identidade do ser Adventista que se reconhece a partir de um conjunto de orientações relativas à saúde, que guia não só a vida prática como também religiosa dos seus seguidores. Tais orientações compõem a religiosidade Adventista, junto com os elementos eminentemente religiosos que embasam a prática cotidiana dos indivíduos. Este trabalho se constituiu por pesquisa bibliográfica, abrangendo as áreas de Saúde, Religião, História, Sociologia e Antropologia, através das quais se abordou os conceitos de saúde, doença e cosmovisão.

Comment les Tahitiens ont-ils conceptualisé le ciel pour en faire un instrument de mesure astronomique ? Leurs traditions apportent des explications sous forme de récits cosmogoniques. Ils peuvent nous envoûter mais, ils ne sont pas considérés comme des solutions scientifiques. L'astronomie a accordé aux théories qui ont cours aujourd'hui toutes les apparences du sérieux et de la rationalité. La cosmogonie a commencé le jour où l'homme s'est posé des questions sur son environnement et ses origines. Il fallait demander à ceux qui avaient voyagé, de raconter ce qu’ils avaient vu et entendu sur les régions encore plus lointaines. Les Tahitiens font partie de ces curieux qui sont allés voir ce qu’il y avait au-delà de l’horizon et pour qui la parole d’un ancêtre était acte de foi. Les réponses se trouvent donc dans les récits mythiques et le vocabulaire utilisé, à la source des symboles intellectuels. Pour les déchiffrer, l’approche linguistique est indispensable.Dans la cosmogonie tahitienne, le dieu Ta’aroa crée le monde. Without a doubt, the approach of a linguist is necessary.In Tahitian cosmogony, the God Ta'aroa created the world. The sky was attached to the earth and in order to separate them; he used ten pillars "Pou", that are marked by stars in the sky called "'Anā". Celestial bodies move across the dome sky by following pathways called "Rua" and each pathway is highlighted by a dominant star called "Ta'urua". This conceptualization of the sky gave Tahitians a remarkable instrument for measuring space and time. The lexicon of astronomy terms numbers nearly two hundred. Understanding them leads one to discover their ancient science.

I sette libri del "De opificio mundi" dell'alessandrino Giovanni Filopono (metà VI p.Ch.) sono il primo commento speculativo alla pericope cosmopoietica del Genesi mediante la fruizione di categorie filosofiche aristoteliche. Presentandone la prima traduzione italiana, si illustra il conato di novità che il Filopono esercita nell'esegesi biblica giacché interpreta Genesi non già attraverso il paradigma demiurgico del "Timeo" platonico, come in àmbito giudaico (Aristobùlo e Filone Ebreo) e nella produzione esameronale patristica (Cappàdoci), bensì attingendo alle opere fisiche e logiche dello Stagirita. Invece della struttura mitico-allegorica sottesa alla lettura cristiana del "Timeo" si impone l'approccio analitico di Aristotele: Filopono rifiuta l'interpretazione allegoretica, impiegando l'argomentazione sillogistico-deduttiva dell'"Organon" aristotelico, ricorrendo a filosofemi cardinali in Aristotele e nella tradizione scientifica che dal medesimo fiorì in Alessandria. Così Filopono in-venta un nuovo modello esegetico: superando l'allegorismo tradizionale (arbitrario e infedele al messaggio rivelato) e il letteralismo della scuola antiochena di Teodoro di Mopsuestia, Teodoreto, Cosma (banalizzante e senza metodo critico) Filopono conia un letteralismo metodologicamente forte, ove il metodo proviene formalmente dalla logica aristotelica e contenutisticamente dalla fisica aristotelica. Già commentatore dello Stagirita, Filopono fa incontrare Rivelazione e filosofia aristotelica, lasciando nel "De opificio mundi" un singolarissimo prodromo della scolastica cristiana. / The present essay is meant to illustrate the philosophical and exegetic work intitled "De opificio mundi" (seven books) written by John Philoponus in Alexandria in the middle of the sixth century A.D. about the kosmopoiesis of the first chapter of Genesis. It is argued this treatise is the first evidence of Biblical exegesis led not according to Plato's "Timaeus" but according to Aristotelian corpus, specially "Physics" and "Organon". Philoponus rejects the allegorical method based upon demiurgic "Timaeus" since he thinks it is arbitrary and untrue compared with the Revelation literalism; therefore Philoponus passes the limit of Aristoboulos, of Philo's "De opificio mundi" and also the limit of Christian tradition of Hexaemerons (Fathers of the Church just like Cappadocians). Philoponus replaces allegorism with a new kind of Biblical literalism: not the trivializing one led by the school of Antioch (Theodore of Mopsuestia, Theodoret of Cyrrhus, Cosmas Indicopleustes) but a scientific and methodic literalism relied on Aristotelian logic and on the (meta)physical concepts derived from Aristotle (kinesis, dynamis, hexis, hypokeimenon, etc.); so "De opificio mundi" has a syllogistic and deductive structure, not a mythic-allegorical one. Last philosopher in Late Antiquity, Philoponus is in-ventor of a striking Christian-Aristotelian scholasticism.

Cette thèse porte sur l'imaginaire des quatre éléments à travers la littérature comparée contemporaine, entre un auteur français, Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio et une auteure iranienne, Goli Taraghi. La méthodologie engagée révèle à partir des qualités sensibles propres à chaque élément, des caractères symboliques. La littérature comparée exige d'autre part, d'appréhender notre sujet avec une vision élargie aux faits culturels et sociétaux car chaque auteur porte dans son imaginaire de la nature, une mémoire à la fois personnelle et collective. Cette mémoire est en effet traversée par des événements historiques particuliers qui ont une influence certaine sur la psychologie individuelle et le rapport au monde. La part du souvenir et l'interprétation du souvenir sont par conséquent attentivement observées et nous suivons ainsi le cours que l'auteur a aménagé à chaque élément, dans l'écriture de son monde. L’étude se compose de trois parties : les première et deuxième parties concernent les domaines sensible et symbolique. La troisième partie confronte les résultats obtenus en mettant en évidence des réseaux thématiques d'images et de symboles. Enfin, la conclusion nous amène à souligner l'importance de la psychologie de chaque auteur qui délimite ainsi un territoire d'exercice pour chaque élément, ébauchant une cosmogonie dont les quatre éléments ne présentent qu'un aspect. Ce qui fait l'intérêt de l'analyse dans la littérature comparée se révèle ici riche de sens en permettant l'émergence des différences et des éléments d'universalité par-delà l'érosion que produit la mondialisation de la post-modernité. L'écrivain montre une certaine indépendance par la persistance d'attitudes singulières animées par la vigueur de l'enracinement culturel. / This thesis focuses upon the imagination of the four elements through contemporary comperative literature, between French writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio and Iranian writer Goli Taraqi. The methodology used here reveals symbolic characters from the sensitive qualities of each element. On the other hand, compared literature requires that we understand our subject with a more expanded vision based on cultural and societal facts because each writer carries in his/her own imagination of the nature at times a personal and collective memory. This memory is in fact crossed by particular historic events which have a specific influence on individual psychology and relation with the world. The share of memories and the interpretation of memories are attentively observed and we follow the way the writer has designed for each element in writing his world. This study is comprised of three parts: The first and the second parts are about sensitive and symbolic areas and the third part compares the results obtained from exposing the thematic networks of images and symbols. Finally, the conclusion brings us to underscore the importance of psychology of each writer, which determines a territory of action for each element by outlining a cosmogony whose four elements represent only a single aspect. The advantage with analysis in the compared literature here is that the latter is rich in meaning, allowing the emergence of differences and elements of universality beyond erosion resulting from the globalization of post-modernity. The writer shows a sort of independence through persistence of specific lively attitudes through the vigor of cultural roots.

À l’ouverture du récit de la Genèse, le plus célèbre des incipit condense ce qui a constitué durant des siècles à la fois l’imagerie et le modèle théorique de la Création du monde en Occident. Or, dès le XVIIe siècle, la conception de la Création s’enrichit de considérations savantes qui bousculent l’univoque de la version biblique. Le récit canonique est alors instruit par les notions profanes d’évolution ou de loi mécanique qui bouleversent l’image biblique d’un Dieu-Créateur du monde en six jours dont la tradition avait longtemps fixé le canon. Pensées au pluriel, les représentations de la Création du monde se diversifient au sein d’une iconographie variée et créative, fruit de la conciliation entre le sacré et le profane qui autorise des représentations inédites où Dieu viendrait souffle rles tourbillons imaginés par Descartes ou encore dynamiser un mécanisme terrestre résolument voltairien. À l’heure de sa complexification théorique, il sera plus particulièrement question d'appréhender la relecture du mythe biblique de la Création du monde dans les arts de la période concernée. À partir d’un corpus d’images tirées de divers horizons – bibliques, scientifiques,alchimiques ou physico-théologiques – l’objet de cette thèse est justement d’appréhender la résilience de l’iconographie biblique dans un monde en pleine sécularisation. Opening of the first chapter of the Genesis,the most well-known incipit of all time sums up both the imagery and the main idea of the Creation of the World that has existed in the west for thousands of years. However, this biblical conception of Creation starts to weaken in the beginning of the XVIIth century and to expand to embrace scientific views when secular ideas of evolution or the laws of mechanics shook the biblical tradition of the six-Day Creation narrative. The once unique idea of a World Creation becomes a more complex concept at the crossroads between sacred and profaneand authorized innovative pictures representing, for example, God blowing the Cartesian cosmogenic whirlpools or giving thrust to the terrestrial mechanism inspired by Voltaire. When the groundbreaking theories on the Creation were published, it was necessary to focus on the artistic reinterpretations of the myth. Based on a great diversity of images – biblical, scientific,alchemical – we’ll try to analyze how biblical iconography stands still at the time of the global secularization of the world in which, as a paradoxical authority or an unconscious standard, the image of the Creator holds up the complex relationship between Man and his Mythology.

Physical and metaphysical zones of transition : comparative themes in Hittite and Greek Karst landscapes in the Late Bronze and Early Iron agesHay, Anne Persida 01 1900 (has links)
English, Afrikaans and Zulu summaries / While there is increasing interest in the effect of landscape on ancient imagination, less
attention has been paid to the impact of restless karst hydrology on ancient beliefs. By
identifying shared themes, this study compares and contrasts the way Hittites and
Aegean people in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages reshaped peripheral karst
landscapes into physical and imagined transitional zones.
Karst geology underpins much of the Aegean and Anatolian landscape, allowing
subterranean zones to be visible and accessible above ground via caves, springs, sinking
streams, sinkholes and other unusual natural formations. In both cultures, certain
dynamic landscapes were considered to be sacred porous points where deities, daemons,
heroes and mortals could transit between cosmic realms. Evidence suggests that Hittites
and Aegean people interpreted dramatic karst landscapes as liminal thresholds and
spaces situated between the world of humans and the world of deities.
Part One investigates physical zones of transition via the karst ecosystems of rural
sanctuaries. Part Two considers the creative interpretation in myth and iconography of
karst phenomena into metaphysical zones of transition. The examples reveal the way in
which Hittites and Aegean people built their concept of the sacred on the extraordinary
characteristics of karst geology. Numinous karst landscapes provided validity and a
familiar reference point for the creation of imagined worlds where mortal and divine

grotte, bronne, sinkgate en ander uitsonderlike natuurlike formasies. In beide
bogenoemde kulture is sekere landskapstonele beskou as heilige en poreuse punte waar
gode, demone, helde en sterwelinge tussen die kosmiese zones kon beweeg. Die
getuienis van die tyd suggereer dat die Hetiete en die Egeïese volkere die dramatiese
karst landskappe as grense of drempels tussen hulle wêreld en dié van die gode beskou
het.
Deel Een ondersoek die fisiese oorgangszones deur te kyk na die karst ecostelsels
waarin plattelandse heiligdomme hulle bevind het. Deel Twee beskou die kreatiewe
