Análise microestrutural, tenacidade à fratura e vida em fadiga das AA7050-T7451 e AA2050-T84 (Al-Li) / Microstructural analysis, fracture toughness and fatigue life of AA7050-T7451 and AA2050-T84 (Al-Li) alloys

Fernando Antonio Pascoal Júnior 23 February 2015 (has links)
A comparative study was made of the AA7050-T7451 and AA2050-T84 alloys and of the L-T and T-L directions to analyze the behavior of the alloys when subjected to room and cryogenic temperatures. The comparative analyses of the alloys and directions were performed using fatigue-precracked compact tension (CT) test specimens. The behavior of the alloys was analyzed based on fracture toughness, KIC, KR curve, fatigue, and da/dN tests. Their microstructure was characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The KR curve indicated that resistance to crack propagation was higher in the L-T direction than in the T-L direction at both room and cryogenic temperatures. In a comparison of the two alloys in the L-T direction at room temperature, they were found to present a similar stress intensity factor. The results of the fatigue tests demonstrated that the T-L direction is more sensitive to the load ratio. An analysis of the results in the L-T and T-L directions indicated that the two alloys exhibited anisotropic behavior.

Fracture in asymmetric bonded joints

Budzik, Michal 18 June 2010 (has links)
Adhesion was studied in asymmetric bonded joints using fracture mechanics tests. The asymmetric bonded joints consist of two different type and/or thickness materials bonded by an adhesive. Mentions of asymmetric bonded joint tests employed so far are rare in the literature. They are imperfect and therefore are not standardized. Accordingly three new tests were introduced in this work to study bonded joints. The new metrological routines and models were built for the CRT (Constant Rate Test), CFT (Constant Force Test) and the CDT (Constant Displacement Test). The routines were validated with the new Artificial Crack Tip test developed in this thesis. Different bonded systems were examined: the adhesives - epoxy, cyanoacrylate, acrylic mastic, PSA; the bonded adherends - aluminium alloys, CFRP composites and polycarbonate. The results obtained in the new tests are very promising in terms of the accuracy and continuous observation of crack kinetics. In addition it was found that the novel strain gauge technique, introduced in the CDT, test allows precise joint monitoring when the adhesive is in a metastable state and a precise estimation of process zone. Another interesting achievement of this work was describing the phenomenon of double crack curvature in the vicinity of the strong – weak adhesion transition zone. The next achievement was derivation of the strain energy release rate from the elastic foundation model, which gives better understanding of the mechanics and the measurements behind adhesive bonding. Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) studies were made of the bonded substrates to estimate the surface treatment effects. The stress state in asymmetric geometry was studied using finite element analysis (FEA), which explained the formation of the curved crack front and the origin of river patterns. The new tests developed in this study appear promising since they offer accurate and reliable results for the materials tested. / W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badan asymetrycznych zlaczy adhezyjnych z wykorzystaniem prób mechaniki pekania. Prise en compte des méconnaissances dans la quantification de la nocivité des fissures en fatigue / Integration of uncertainties in fatigue cracks hazardness quantification.

Boutet, Pierre 15 December 2015 (has links)
In industrial plants, regular inspections are planned to assess the internal state of installations. If some cracks are revealed, it is desirable to know whether the structure can still be used or if a degraded mode of operation should be considered. Starting from a linear elastic fracture mechanics model, the work presented studied the scatter of the remaining life of such cracked parts due to the uncertainties on the parameters of the prediction model. Initial crack size, material properties and input parameters of Paris’ law have been considered as random variables and their distributions have been experimentally identified and fitted with convenient statistical laws. Time Of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and field measurement technique based on Digital Image Correlation (DIC) were used to monitor the crack propagation initiated from a notch introduced in specimen submitted to uniaxial cyclic loading. Experimental crack length results were used to initiate computations and as a mean to validate numerical results. Both the crack lengths distributions resulting from the application of loading cycles and the distribution of the number of cycles leading to a given crack length were obtained from a Monte-Carlo method applied to the prediction model. The fit of these distributions with log-normal laws provided analytical tools to assess probabilistic crack propagation. It allowed for risk mapping and for the evaluation of the studied component’s reliability evolution. Last, the effects of an actualisation of crack length knowledge along the life of this component in terms of assessment uncertainty and predicted residual life extension has been studied. Especially, to limit the cost of non-destructive techniques inspection in industrial cases, a reliability-based strategy has been proposed for the optimisation of the crack knowledge actualisation.

A model reduction strategy to predict plasticity induced memory effects in fatigue crack growth in an anisotropic medium : application to crystal plasticity

Tezeghdanti, Walid 26 February 2019 (has links)
The fatigue life prediction of high pressure turbine blades may require a damage tolerance approach based on the study of possible crack propagation. The nonlinear behavior of the material under complex nonproportional loadings and the high cost of running long and expensive elastic-plastic FE computations on complex 3D structures over millions of cycles are some major issues that may encounter this type of approach.Within this context, an incremental model was proposed based on plasticity as a main mechanism for fatigue crack growth.A model reduction strategy using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) was used to reduce the cost of FEA. Based on a set of hypotheses, the number of the degrees of freedom of the problem is reduced drastically. The plasticity at the crack tip is finally described by a set of empirical equations of few nonlocal variables and some internal variables. In order to apply this modeling strategy to the case of anisotropic materials that represent the behavior of single crystals, a first study was done with cubic elasticity and a Von-Mises plasticity. Elastic and plastic reference fields, required to reduce the model, were determined. Then, a material model of the near crack tip region was proposed based on nonlocal intensity factors. A yield criterion function was proposed based on Hoenig's asymptotic solutions for anisotropic materials. The study of plastic flow directions with the nonlocal variables of the model shows a strong dependency on the cubic elasticity. A strategy to identify internal variables is proposed as well. In the second part, a crystal plasticity model was implemented. The activation of different slip systems was taken into account in the model reduction strategy. A kinematic basis was constructed for each slip system. Finally, a strategy was proposed to transpose the local crystal plasticity model to the nonlocal scale of the crack.

Lomové chování trubkových polyolefinů / Fracture Behaviour of Pipe Grade Polyolefins

Fiedler, Lubomír January 2011 (has links)
The thesis deals with the study of the fracture behaviour of the pipe grades of high density polyethylene (HDPE). Detailed study of current state of knowledge was performed in the first part. The focus was put on those types of polymers used for pipeline applications, the limit states of the plastic pipes, and the key parameters affecting the fracture behaviour of plastic pipes’ materials. The methods used for testing the plastic pipes and native pipeline materials were summarized. In the second part of this work, the relationship between the processing conditions, internal structure and fracture behaviour of the native types of HDPE pipe grades was evaluated. Than, the correlation between short-term alternative tests and the standardized accelerated full notch creep test (FNCT) was studied. An experimental basis for numerical model for evaluation of the fracture behaviour of multilayer pipes was established. Two types of non-homogeneous specimens for evaluating the resistance of multilayer pipes against slow crack growth (SCG) were suggested. This evaluation was based on the parameters of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and elasto-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM).

Crack propagation in concrete dams driven by internal water pressure

Sohrabi, Maria, Sanchez Loarte, José January 2017 (has links)
Concrete structures are in general expected to be subjected to cracking during its service life. This is the reason why concrete is reinforced, where the reinforcement is only activated after cracks occur. However, cracks may be a concern in large concrete structures, such as dams, since it may result in reduced service life. The underlying mechanisms behind crack formations are well known at present day. On the other hand, information concerning the crack condition over time and its influence on the structure is limited, such as the influence of water pressure within the cracks. The aim of this project is to study crack propagation influenced by water pressure and to define an experimental test setup that allows for crack propagation due to this load. Numerical analyses have been performed on an initial cracked specimen to study the pressure along the crack propagation. The finite element method has been used as the numerical analysis tool, through the use of the software ABAQUS. The finite element models included in these studies are based on linear or nonlinear material behavior to analyze the behavior during a successively increasing load. The numerical results show that a crack propagates faster if the water is keeping up with the crack extension, i.e. lower water pressure is required to open up a new crack. When the water does not have time to develop within the crack propagation, more pressure is required to open up a new crack. The experimental results show that the connection between the water inlet and the specimen is heavily affected by the bonding material. In addition, concrete quality and crack geometry affects the propagation behavior.

[pt] ANÁLISE DE PROPAGAÇÃO DE TRINCAS EM ESTRUTURAS PRÉ-FRATURADAS VIA MÉTODOS DOS ELEMENTOS FINITOS ESTENDIDOS / [en] CRACK PROPAGATION ANALYSIS IN PRE-FRACTURED STRUCTURES VIA EXTENDED FINITE ELEMENT METHODS

FELIPE ALVES BACELAR 08 November 2022 (has links)
[en] This work presents a literature review on the extended finite element method (XFEM), which is a widely used method for fracture mechanics studies. It can be seen as an efficient method for this type of problem, considering that remeshing is not necessary during the crack propagation process, and the great differential of the extended finite element method is the presence of the Heaviside and asymptotic functions in the crack domain elements. Another method for solving fracture mechanics problems is the dual boundary element method (DBEM), which consists of defining the domain of the structure through a boundary. Aiming to encourage future works in this line of research, a chapter was prepared pointing out the main details of the modeling of a fracture mechanics problem in the Abaqus software. After that, six analyzes were performed in XFEM for two different cases, previously solved by Portela et al (1993) by DBEM. For the first case, two models were made of a square plate with a horizontal crack located on the left side, the other set of modeling was applied to a crucifix-shaped plate with a diagonal crack. In the analyzes it was noticed that there is a variation between the crack propagation paths depending on the applied external load. In order to compare the two methods, XFEM and DBEM, the propagation paths obtained in the simulations were analyzed, thus identifying the similarity between the results.
