Pilgrimage and travel on Route 66| An ethnographic study of travelers and shrines

Charest, Olivia Moira 03 February 2016 (has links)

People come from all over the world to drive the Mother Road. Eight states in America and 10 foreign countries have Route 66 associations. Individuals belonging to European Route 66 associations plan to hold the first European Route 66 Festival in the summer of 2016. Why is Route 66 such an important worldwide cultural phenomenon? This thesis explores how Route 66 travel has become so popular amongst travelers from both the United States and countries around the world. This research focuses on foreign travelers’ motivations, experiences, and revelations driving the Mother Road, and views travel along Route 66 as a form of secular pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage travel on Route 66 allows an individual to transcend beyond the tourist experience and engage in events outside of their normal lives. During the journey, the traveler experiences the mythology, nostalgia, and authenticity surrounding the road and even encounters a shift in their identity. Foreign travelers adopt an “American” identity created by their experiences traveling Route 66. During the journey, the individual also engages in the communitas of Route 66 fellow travelers.

Rebuilding the Common at the Border of the Nation: The Politics of Sans Papiers in Marseille

Dorval, Arianne January 2014 (has links)

My dissertation traces undocumented migrants' experiences at the edge of Europe, as well as their struggles to emerge from the spatio-temporal void to which they are being increasingly confined. By providing an ethnographic account of sans papiers who live, work, and organize politically in Marseille, I show how undocumented mend and women in the border-city are being dislocated, depersonalized and devalued, and then account for the practices by which they seek to include themselves in the political community that refuses to see and hear them. In so doing, I elucidate the production and experience of exile in a city increasingly transformed by urban enclosure and the reconfiguration of (supra)national borders. I investigate moreover sans papiers' capacity to rupture, through a series of spontaneous and/or organized actions, the naturalized space-time of the neoliberal security state.

In my exploration of the sans papiers predicament, I deploy a dialectical political economy framework supplemented with a Badiousian reading of the political event. I examine how migrant `illegality' is produced at the juncture between capital and the state, and assign centrality to space and time as key (mediating) categories of migrant experience. In turn, I construe the political subjectivation of sans papiers as a negating gesture grounded, not in the desire for free circulation, but in the experience of radical lack. In so doing, I critically engage the most recent literature on irregular migration, as well as ongoing debates surrounding the common's enclosure and the contradictions of citizenship in the neoliberal moment.

My dissertation is organized around the following three questions: 1) How have recent transformations in Marseille's urban landscape and the European immigration regime reconstituted the space-time of undocumented migrants in the cosmopolitan port-city? 2) What novel subjectivities are emerging out of these processes? 3) How can sans papiers rebuild, if at all, the common at the border of a nation predicated on their simultaneous exclusion and exploitation? In answering these questions, my dissertation follows the experiential trajectory of migrants in Marseille from an (heterotopic) `off-place' to the `void of exile'--a shift produced by the neoliberal reorganization of labor and the reconfiguration of (supra)national borders in Europe. It also traces the formation of a `generic class' of overexploited workers who, in spite of contributing to building the new `global Marseille,' are deprived of the right to have rights, of any social visibility, and indeed of any future to speak of.

My dissertation argues that, in the moment they emerge from the void and onto the political scene, sans papiers dissolve (if only momentarily) the walls that keep them locked within a regime of invisibility/hypervisibility. They interrupt, moreover, the logic of circulation and accumulation that is driving the enclosure of Marseille's spatio-temporal common. Thus they point to the possibility of building--in a universalizing gesture--a radically different world: beyond papers, beyond value and towards radical equality.
/ Dissertation

"It's not a Collective; It's a Personal Experience that Happens to be Shared"| How Philosophical Systems of Individualism are sustained through Masonic Collaboration

Wilhelm, Laura Michele 23 November 2016 (has links)

This dissertation examines the experience of Freemasonry, as practiced in the United States, Colombia, and through Masonic literature, from an anthropological perspective. The Freemasons are a fraternal society with a global presence. In this work, the experience of Freemasonry, as both an individual/personal journey and a shared/collective activity is discussed. The work utilizes a number of methods and theoretical bases, including, but not limited to, a reliance on both primary and secondary textual sources which enhance both an understanding of Freemasonry from Masonic perspectives as well as presents anthropological and interdisciplinary context and analyses. Theoretical discussions include, but are not limited to, a reconsideration of what constitutes a field site, how scholarship on secrecy can enhance the study of a society which generally does not consider itself a true secret society, and how texts can act both as reference and as a set of participants. The core inquiries of this project discuss how philosophical systems of individualism can be sustained through specific forms of collaboration, and how the simultaneity of the shared and the individual experience of Masonry constitutes a culture in its own right. Contributing to work done within the anthropology of Freemasonry, along with a range and combination of disciplinary and interdisciplinary orientations, such as an “activity-based approach”, and including elements of variation and consensus, this project provides a dialogue on themes of belonging, individualism, knowledge production, access, “activity”, and experience.

Refugee and asylum-seeker health seeking in the greater Boston area

Morillo, Meghan 02 November 2017 (has links)
In this research project, I examine the role that three organizations play in the greater Boston area. I sought to understand how these organizations were offering care to this population, and, in a broader sense, what it means to care for asylum-seekers and refugees. To answer this question, I developed a qualitative study that consisted of semi-structured interview and participant observation at three different sites from August 2015 through February 2017. I argue that the agencies where I did my research demonstrated that healthcare does not equal medical care. These agencies offered an integrative approach to overall care for those refugees and asylum-seekers utilizing their services. This care reflected the pre-defined needs and desires of refugees and asylum-seekers while also remaining fluid and adapting to individual cases.

An Anthropology of the Iranian Film Industry: The making of The Willow Tree

Rossoukh, Ramyar Dagoberto January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation offers a detailed empirical study of a film industry by closely following the industrial process involved in the making of an Iranian feature length film, The Willow Tree (dir. Majid Majidi, 2005). What I mean by film industry is the standardized process of making a film through various semi-independent modules that must be performed in a sequence and that are widely shared around the world. Within the dissertation, I move from the initial stages of pre-production (script writing, casting, location scouting), through production (shooting) and post-production (editing, mixing), to the final stages of distribution and exhibition in national and international markets. My concern is with process as product. This stance foregrounds the background of film production, and allows us to see the dialectical relationship between film industry as a universal process and the more particular cultural contexts within which a variety of films situate themselves. It seeks to move the analytical focus to the cultural and social contexts of filmic production and consumption and explore the links between material and ideological, industrial and aesthetic, and national and transnational dimensions of cinema's circulation. In the case of The Willow Tree, I argue that the film was not only meant to portray Islamic virtue on the screen but to subject its own industrial production to Islamic practices. / Anthropology

Un paso pa' delante| Notions of middle class economic success in three Salvadoran advertising agencies in the face of dollarization

Arias, Carlos Andres 24 October 2015 (has links)

This qualitative study explores the evolving notion of economic success among middle class Salvadorans. While initially aimed at the effects of dollarization, the scope was widened to be more inclusive of overall neoliberal practices in El Salvador. In-depth interviews and ethnographic observations were used to understand life as a middle class Salvadoran and the relationship between government practices, including dollarization, and the evolving definition of economic success. Focusing on the individuals in the advertising industry, this study examines the complex factors that influence and determine middle class sentiments regarding their economic status and their point of view on dollarization’s effects on their lives. Additionally, this study considers how opinions and experiences differ along socioeconomic lines, comparing middle class employee experiences with that of upper class CEOs. The study was conducted in San Salvador, El Salvador; the economic and cultural center of El Salvador.

Invoking Personhood in Contemporary China| Seeing through the Lens of a Beijing Family Therapy Center

Chen, Wenrui 05 January 2016 (has links)

As China’s sweeping social and economic reforms passes its third decade, a once reviled discipline is gaining popularity and prominence among the urban middle class. Described by some researchers as a ‘psycho-boom,’ the rise of the psychological sciences brings to the fore the unique challenges and issues of contemporary Chinese life for urban, middle class families through a psychological lens. Drawing on fieldwork conducted between 2011 and 2013 at a Beijing Family Therapy Center, this dissertation explores the implications of social (e.g. population control) and economic (e.g. privatization) policies for the imbricating of family relations, especially between mothers and sons. The author puts forth an ‘expansive-I’ notion of personhood which challenges the presumed singular concept of person. Additionally, based on participant-observation of family therapy sessions and interviews with family therapists, this dissertation emphasizes the contingent, interactive quality of therapy, complicating psychotherapy’s relationship to governmentality and biopower.

Globaalikasvatuksella maailmankansalaisiksi?:globaalikasvatuksen toteutettavuuden arviointia uuden opetussuunnitelman ja Oulun aineenopettajakoulutuksen pohjalta

Kurikka, J. (Jonna) 21 May 2015 (has links)

Ahto-Hakonen, J. (Jenni) 01 June 2016 (has links)
