從守門機制看2014年簡單生活節的策展活動 / An Exploratory Study of the 2014 Urban Simple Life Curation from the Perspective of Gatekeeping賴怡君, Lai, Yi Chun Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate the importance of gatekeeping process in cultural festivals and the cultural and creative industries. This study uses the gatekeeping theory which is commonly discussed in the area of communications in order to understand how the festival carries out gatekeeping function in its curation by using an example of the “2014 Urban Simple Life Festival”.
The research question of the study is “how the 2014 Urban Simple Life Festival uses gatekeeping in the curation?”. The study adopts case study and uses participant observations and in-depth interviews as the research tools to investigate how the gatekeeping is used in the 2014 Urban Simple Life Festival curation. In addition, this research aims to explore how the gatekeeping outcomes influence festivals themselves and the innovations of the cultural and creative industries.
This research finds out that the festival organizer’s gatekeeping abilities and the gatekeeping contents do affect the gatekeeping boundary. Furthermore, the gatekeeping process is a repeated correcting process. Apart from the four gatekeeping abilities in the existed literature, the study also discovers that the most important gatekeeping ability in festivals is the “curatorial ability”. With the curatorial ability, the festival organizer would be able to help and assist the participants to present their best work in the Festival as well as to enhance their brand visibility to the market. This study suggests that the festival organizer should take the “curatorial ability” into consideration during the curation process to enhance the innovation ability of the cultural and creative industries

A Search For Common Pleasures: CURATING THE CITYHelsel, Sand, n/a January 2009 (has links)
The project-based research questions how professionals working in the built environment can engage a broader range of 'others' (students, client, users) in ways of seeing and acting in a meaningful way. It challenges the role of the expert in architecture and urban design and in particular their use of the masterplan, which is often an oversimplified reductive response, laden with generalisations and the ill-considered overlay of inappropriate models. Design methods are designed to enable us to see afresh and respond accordingly. These are demonstrated in three suites of projects that include urban installations such as Five Walks for the Melbourne International Arts Festival, war memorials, lectures, photographs and teaching practice such as Taipei Operations, a student workshop, architectural exhibition, and book. The design research is situated within an expanded field of cross-disciplinary practice that includes art, landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and geography. Tools are developed to enable us to understand the city at many spatial and temporal scales; observations made at a micro scale reveal systems at a macro scale - a bottom-up approach. The application of the methods explored implies that

Anthologists and the literary market : a comparative study of al-Tha'ālibī's Yatīmat al-dahr and 'Awfī's Lubāb al-albābWhite, James January 2018 (has links)
This thesis offers the first detailed study of publishing culture in the medieval eastern Islamic world by examining how two influential anthologists active in Central Asia mediated between authors and their audiences. It analyses the contents of al-Tha'ālibī's (d. 429/1037-8) Yatīmat al-dahr, a biographical anthology of Arabic poetry and prose concerned with the literature of the 4th/10th and the early 5th/11th centuries, comparing them with the material found in 'Awfī's (d. 640/1242 or before) Lubāb al-albāb, a biographical anthology of Persian poetry focused on verse produced between the late 3rd/9th and the early 7th/13th centuries. Yatīmat al-dahr and Lubāb al-albāb are approached as ventures which aimed to render the high culture of Arabic and Persian literature accessible to readers by presenting hitherto unpublished texts in a pedagogical fashion. The thesis contributes to a current wave of research that is concerned with the history of the book in the Islamic world, but it moves the focus of such scholarship onto literary texts and their manipulation. Its principal findings can be summarised as follows: Firstly, it revises the prevalent idea that literary culture was entirely dependent on patronage, by demonstrating how market demand influenced the kinds of writing produced in the different regions of the Arabic- and Persian-speaking worlds. Patronage emerges as a force that was intertwined with the book trade, which had already begun to define conceptions of authorship. Secondly, it shows that anthologies are more than collections of exemplary texts, by uncovering how al-Tha'ālibī and 'Awfī pursue the study of society, literary history and literary theory. The anthologists did not simply reproduce extracts, but edited them in accordance with their broader intellectual projects. Lastly, it reconstructs the cosmopolitan literary culture which existed in Khurasan and Transoxiana between the 4th/10th and 7th/13th centuries, showing that many authors worked in bilingual Arabic-Persian environments, moved between Arabic and Persian spheres, and read books in both languages. The thesis is accompanied by an index of circa eight thousand poems catalogued by genre, and by an appendix which lists the material that the anthologists drew from their sources.

This project has, as object of study and customization, the software Access to Memory (AtoM), a system for description and representation of archival collections applied to the documentation department of a historical museum. The purpose of this application is to study the adaptation and use of AtoM in documentary production and representation of objects in museological institutions of diverse and heterogeneous collections. The system AtoM, originated from an agreement between the International Council on Archives and the group Artefactual, provides the description of memory collections and their consequent representation in archival institutions, giving information access to these collections. In this project, we seek to contribute to Information Science (IS) and Museology regarding the possibilities of access, sharing and interaction of the subjects with the information kept by these institutions, since the new potentialities of AtoM in the context of museums allow customizing the standardized description of objects and interoperability across systems. The initiative is justified by its social relevance once open, free and customizable software, such as the AtoM, with potentialities of horizontal information treatment allow a type of conversation among individuals, turning them into protagonists of their stories. Thus, an interdisciplinary investigation was carried out between IS and Museology and, then, a compilation of the concepts and themes listed for an optimal use of the system in a museum environment, considering the representative needs of the museum collections in Brazil, which can only count with proprietary software for representation and cataloging. A participatory exploration was also carried out in the AtoM in order to understand the operation of the system applied to the description of the model collection. For the experience, the collection belonging to Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciencias da Universidade Estadual Paulista, UNESP, was chosen. The needs for representation recorded in digital representations of descriptive cards - according to the model elaborated by CIDOC - were considered, with the necessary customizations for the re-design of the fields not served by the AtoM in the Digital Curation, aiming to provide its representation and access in Web2.0 digital environments.

The present dissertation follows a trajectory which discusses both the difficulty in seeing works of art made by women, as well understanding that female gaze allows another way of seeing the world. Women artists looked for alternatives to display their works, being these, photos, collages, paintings, illustrations and videos. Approaching the alternative media such as the culture of mail art, the zines and nowadays social networks, this study show us a parallel circulation of art outside the museums, in which increasingly younger artists propose to share their gaze with the public. The technologies available over the internet today are largely used by artists to gain visibility, and we can understand them as tools that contribute to this new way of exhibiting and experimenting of spaces. We put particular moments together, without historiographical concern, that composed a feminist narrative whose approaches inspired new artists from the years of 2010, and culminated in an attempt of curation with themes that deal with experiences, intimacies and othering ourselves.

Improved Workflows for RNA Homology SearchYazbeck, Ali 24 July 2019 (has links)
Non-coding RNAs are the most abundant class of RNAs found throughout
genomes. These RNAs are key players of gene regulation and thus, the func-
tion of whole organisms. Numerous methods have been developed so far for
detecting novel classes of ncRNAs or finding homologs to the known ones.
Because of their abundance, the sequence availability of these RNAs is rapidly
increasing, as is the case for example for microRNAs. However, for classes of
them, still only incomplete information is available, invertebrates 7SK snRNA
for instance. Consequently, a lot of false positive outputs are produced in
the former case, and more accurate annotation methods are needed for the
latter cases to improve derivable knowledge. This makes the accuracy of
gathering correct homologs a challenging task and it leads directly to a not
less important problem, the curation of these data.
Finding solutions for the aforementioned problems is more complex than one
would expect as these RNAs are characterized not only by sequences informa-
tion but also structure information, in addition to distinct biological features.
In this work, data curation methods and sensitive homology search are shown
as complementary methods to solve these problems. A careful curation and
annotation method revealed new structural information in the invertebrates
7SK snRNA, which pushes the investigation in the area forward. This has
been reflected by detecting new high potential 7SK RNA genes in different
invertebrates groups. Moreover, the gaps between homology search and well-
curated data on the one side, and between experimental and computational
outputs on the other side, are closed. These gaps were bridged by a curation
method applied to the microRNA data, which was then turned into a com-
prehensive workflow implemented into an automated pipeline. MIRfix is a
microRNA curation pipeline considering the detailed sequence and structure
information of the metazoan microRNAs, together with biological features
related to the microRNA biogenesis. Moreover, this pipeline can be integrated
into existing methods and tools related to microRNA homology search and
data curation. The application of this pipeline on the biggest open source
microRNA database revealed its high capacity in detecting wrong annotated
pre-miRNA, eventually improving alignment quality of the majority of the
available data. Additionally, it was tested with artificial datasets highlighting
the high accuracy in predicting the pre-miRNA components, miRNA and
