Experimental study of the effect of H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid immiscibility on the reaction calcite + quartz + rutile = sphene + CO2 at 2 KBAR

Doyle, John Andrew January 1989 (has links)
The minimum T-XCO₂ location of the reaction boundary calcite + quartz + rutile = sphene + CO₂ has been experimentally determined in H₂0-CO₂-NaCl fluids at 2 kbar. Extent and direction of reaction were monitored by the CO₂ weight change method using natural materials. All bulk compositions contain 23 wt. % NaCI, relative to NaCl-H₂0. Synthetic fluid inclusions trapped at the T-XCO₂ conditions of several points along the curve suggest unmixing of the fluid phase, as evidenced by coexisting CO₂ vapor-rich and aqueous, halite-bearing inclusions. Results from 450-520 °C are listed below. / Master of Science

Chapman Friends School: A Study of the Creation of Culture

Dowling, Maureen F. 29 March 2000 (has links)
In recent years a body of literature on the topic of school culture has emerged, highlighting the importance of developing strong school cultures. My purpose was to explore the creation of culture in a new school by studying the school's core principles, leadership, history, practices, decision making, language, membership, environment, and critical events. The setting for this descriptive case study was Chapman Friends School - an alternative Quaker high school located in a mid-Atlantic state. Data-gathering techniques included: (a) weekly on-site observations, (b) formal interviews, (c) school publications and documents, and (d) the researcher's log. The data were analyzed with a thematic coding system based on the cultural components. Three factors were found to be critical in the creation of culture at Chapman Friends School: (a) core principles and the symbolic interactions whereby they were transmitted; (b) the charismatic, authentic leadership of the headmaster; and (c) the consensus-based standards for student membership. The creation of culture at Chapman Friends School was a process wherein school members sought to resolve problems and issues resulting from their conflicting expectations of what the school should be. The creation of culture at Chapman Friends School involved the development of a shared image of what the school should become. Finally, as indicated by previous researchers and supported in this study, a culture evolves over time. The findings expand the field of literature on the subject of school culture and provide insight for school leaders and educators seeking to create effective school cultures. Related topics for further study include: (a) student enrollment screening procedures which shape a school culture, (b) the effect of secular school leaders on the creation of culture in religious-based schools, (c) the effect of the absence of a Quaker majority in Quaker schools, and (d) alternative environmental options for school settings and their effect on school culture. / Ed. A study of the fine structure and the function of the ocellus of the adult cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni, Hübner) (lepidoptera: noctuidae)

Dow, Matthew Allen 08 June 2010 (has links)
The structure of the cabbage looper ocellus was examined by light and electron microscopy. Rhabdoms were found in the distal region of the retinula cells. These were formed by the apposition of microvillar borders of adjacent cells, thus, an interrupted network of rhabdoms was found to exist in cross section. No convergence of first order neurons to second order neurons was found anywhere above the protocerebrum as is typical of insect photoreceptors in general. No synapses were found to exist anywhere above the brain. It is hypothesized that the cabbage looper ocellus plays a major role in determining the light intensity at which crepuscular flight is initiated. This hypothesis was tested in the following manner. Laboratory reared moths were divided into five groups each with a different or no treatment. These were: 1. Compound eyes and ocelli occluded. 2. Compound eyes occluded. 3. Ocelli occluded. 4. Controls. 5. Controls sham treated. All groups were placed in transparent flight chambers and submitted to a simulated sunset. Test results were compared using the Duncan Multi-Range Test and Standard errors. The results indicate that the cabbage looper ocellus plays a role in determining the light intensity at which crepuscular flight is initiated. / Master of Science

The influence of low moisture stress on the gas exchange and thylakoid activity of loblolly pine (pinus taeda) and aleppo pine (pinus halepensis)

Doulis, Andreas G. 08 April 2009 (has links)
The objectives of this study were to determine the influence of sublethal water stress on the physiology of loblolly and Aleppo pine. Gas exchange characteristics, uncoupled thylakoid electron transport capacity, and needle osmotic potentials were measured. Seedlings of both species were watered only when their needle water potential fell below -1.8 and -2.2 MPa respectively (water stress conditioning) or were kept well watered (controls). After 10 weeks of water stress conditioning, both regimes were allowed to dry down. During this period of increasing water stress, photosynthesis in both species was determined at 5 different cuvette CO₂ concentrations (approximately 200, 330, 500, 650, and 800 ppm). With Aleppo pine only, mesophyll resistances and stomatal limitations to gas exchange were estimated. Thylakoids were extracted from both species and their activity was measured in a liquid phase O₂ electrode (Hansatech Ltd) as rate of O₂ consumption. Methyl Viologen (1,1’ -dimethyl -4, 4’- bipyridinium ion ) was included in the reaction medium. Photosynthesis decreased with increasing water stress but fell more slowly in the conditioned seedlings. As water stress increased, total resistance to CO₂ exchange increased for both regimes to a much higher level than explained by stomatal resistance alone. In the conditioned seedlings, resistances increased less precipitously than in controls. Osmotic adjustment as measured with thermocouple psychrometers occurred in both species. Decreases in photosynthesis (both species) and increases in mesophyll resistance (Aleppo pine) were not accompanied by a decrease in whole chain uncoupled electron transport capacity. / Master of Science

Doré, Sandra 01 March 2021 (has links)

Doré, Marie-Claire 13 April 2018 (has links)

The Eighteenth North Carolina Infantry Regiment, C.S.A.

Dozier, Graham Town 09 February 2007 (has links)
In the spring of 1861, eager young men gathered in small towns in five southeastern North Carolina counties and enlisted in ten local companies. After spending the summer in a Wilmington training camp, these companies were combined to form the 18th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. The regiment served for a short time in South Carolina before joining the war in Virginia as a member of Gen. Lawrence Branch's brigade. The 18th North Carolina first saw combat in May, 1862, at the Battle of Hanover Court House. A month later, the unit fought in the Seven Days' Battles as part of the Army of Northern Virginia. The 18th North Carolina took an active role in the victorious campaigns of the autumn. In May, 1863, it had the misfortune to be the "friendly" unit that wounded Gen. Stonewall Jackson in the woods near Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, the 18th North Carolina assaulted the Union center with the rest of the ill-fated soldiers in Pickett’s Charge. The regiment struggled with the army against Grant in the long campaign that culminated in the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House in April. 1865. This is the history of the 18th North Carolina from its creation to its surrender. / Master of Arts
