Industrial development in a border area: facts and figures from East LondonBarker, John Percy January 1964 (has links)
In the early 1950's the area of the eastern Cape Province adjoining the Transkei was the object of an intensive study known as the Border Regional Survey and five volumes have already been published. This work is a more detailed investigation of one aspect of the economy, namely the growth of manufacturing industry. Its importance lies in the fact that not only is the African population increasing rapidly, but that effective rehabilitation of peasant farming in the Transkei and Ciskei must necessarily displace large numbers from the land. Expansion of manufacturing industry would appear to be the most effective means of providing remunerative employment for these people. Moreover, the government has embarked upon a policy of encouraging the establishment of factories on the periphery of the Bantu areas, and the eastern Cape is an important area in this general scheme. It may well be the most crucial testing point of the whole policy of 'border industries', because with its large Transkeian hinterland it is the area most in need of expanding employment opportunities; but, at the same time, by reason of locational and other disabilities, it is the area in which industrial expansion may be most difficult to achieve.

Saving Animals and the Land: Uniting the American Animal Rights and Environmental Movements of the Late Twentieth CenturySchmidt, Kelsey 01 August 2017 (has links)
The following research explores the growing stability of the relationship between the modern American animal rights and environmental movements in the aftermath of the 1960s counterculture. The movements have traditionally been considered by scholars in their separate contexts, because the movements had a tenuous and inconsistent relationship throughout their early histories. While the separate consideration of the movements may have been more appropriate for research prior to the 1960s, the movements became increasingly intertwined through various influences of the counterculture. The counterculture introduced new philosophies, utilitarianism and deep ecology, to the movements that united them through their mutual distaste for anthropocentrism and industrialization. The counterculture also provided animal rights and environmental advocates with alternative lifestyles with which to promote their goals and affect real change. The movements began to most clearly unite in their mutual campaigns against the intensive animal farming industry, more controversially and widely known as “factory farming.” Both movements utilized the philosophies introduced to their movements to argue against the moral ills of the industry. Hence, they identified a need to actively combat the effects of the meat industry and have since advocated a widespread adoption of the vegetarian lifestyle among the American public.

The present study sought to trace the trajectory of industrial development in Brazil, from the policies for the sector as well as through major historical developments that were to influence the economy and in particular the industrial sector. The disputes within the ruling class and between both, internal and external economic groups, were present throughout the journey reassembled this analysis, as well as contribute to the explanation of the direction taken by the country. At the end we sought to contribute to the debate about the phenomenon of deindustrialization of the country to which the evidence be experiencing. A more detailed analysis was conducted on the period 2003-2010, during the height of commodity boom and appreciation of Brazil's trade balance, besides the political transition that this period represents. As distintas interpretações acerca do projeto de industrialização do Governo Vargas (1951-54) e suas influências no Governo Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-61) /Souza, Felipe Sanches. January 2012 (has links)
This paper is structured in three chapters that each host one of three different interpretations of the ideological content behind the design of economic and industrial development adopted by the Government of Vargas (1951-54), as well as the set of macroeconomic policies put in practice by the authorities at the time. The work also highlights the discussion, which often was not consensus among the authors who composed each chapter, the possible influences inherited by the Government of Kubitschek's industrial development project implemented by Vargas. After demonstrating the existence of different interpretations of the industrialization project of the Government Getúlio Vargas (1951-54) and their influences in the government of Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-61), it is concluded that the Ministry of Finance, represented by the figure of Lafer actually held a position pro industrialization so that containment measures (spending fiducitários) held not come into collision with the proposed industrialization, which gave support to the materialization of an explicit effort to expand domestic production with the decisive support of policies currency and credit. Moreover, it is noteworthy that there was between the governments of Vargas and Kubitschek, a motion continuity plans and actions taken on behalf of the...
