Text in English / This exploratory study creates a post-modern narrative context for psychotherapy and extends these ideas to an individual living with a psychiatric disorder, namely obsessive-compulsive disorder. The present study explores OCD through the ecosystemic perspective and aims to obtain a holistic understanding of an individual's experience of living with OCD and to describe the recursive connections between OCD and the individual's ecological context. This investigation includes the
re-authoring therapy of Michael White and David Epston and the application of their ideas to the individual's life story. A qualitative method within the naturalistic paradigm is employed focussing on the unique experience of the individual, which allows for an understanding of the individual's personal meaning. A postmodern approach is used to examine various discourses with relevance to subject positioning and its effect on individual spirituality. The stories are located within different discourses, introducing a spiritual diversity. Through narrative, a holistic understanding of the spiritual experiences of two contemporary Christian women who have suffered abuse is provided, highlighting spirituality as an essential component to physical and psychosocial well-being.
Contextual post-structural feminist theology and the social construction theory of reality informed this work. The performative function of language in social interaction is emphasised, situating language and relationship as key factors in the construction of individual identity and spirituality. Whilst recognising the constitutive force of discourse, the research highlights the notion that people can exercise choice in opposition to these discursive practices. Elements of spiritual transformation, hope and empowerment surfaced as counter stories to the culture of abuse, providing the scaffolding for re-storying their lives. / Practical Theology / M.Th. The state of Maleness has received much attention in academic and public discourse of late. One such instance is the play Defending the Caveman, which depicts men in their ”natural” settings as Cavemen, thereby justifying Caveman-like behaviour. On the other hand, much writing exists that find men culpable of discrimination, violence and abuse towards others. Discourses like these have real effects on the ways in which men choose and act on their Maleness. Six men engaged in narrative therapeutic discussions in an attempt to share their stories of Maleness, to discuss how society constructs men, and to re-evaluate the Maleness chosen by the participants. / Practical Theology / M.Th. "Between the walls of Jasper, in the streets of gold" : the deconstruction of Afrikaner mythology in Marlene van Niekerk's triomfDu Plessis, Aletta Catharina 07 1900 (has links)
Triomf explores the distortion of the national Afrikaner identity as a result of apartheid. This
dissertation aims to demonstrate how van Niekerk deconstructs the Afrikaner through myths,
stories, symbols, intertextuality and Derridean deconstruction. The Benades represent the
Afrikaner on three levels: the personal, the national and the primordial. Since the Benades are
primordial, Van Niekerk is able to use the archetypes of Jung’s collective unconscious to
deconstruct the archetypal mythological structures Afrikaner nationalists used to develop identity
and unity. The archetypes deconstructed are Spirit, the Great Mother, Re-birth, the Trickster, the
Physical Hearth and the Sacred Fire. Afrikaner myths deconstructed include the Great Trek, the
family, the patriarch, the matriarch, the future of a white Afrikaner nation and the binding
character of Afrikaans as white national language. Van Niekerk undermines the plaasroman of the

In the existing literature, the constructs of "madness" and "woman' have long
been associated with one another. This association has led to attempts by various
authors, and also this current work, to deconstruct the constructs of madness and
gender. The association between the constructs of "madness" and gender is seen
in terms of metaphor. The relationship between the constructs of madness" and
"woman" are described in terms of the manner in which meanings of metaphors of
duality are collapsed onto one another.
The approach to this discussion typifies the current shift in the human sciences
from a belief in objective bias-neutral research to a new kind of self -conscious and
sophisticated reality. I placed myself in this discussion as a researcher and a therapist, influenced by feminist, contextual and social constructionist ideas.
