The archaeology of San Diego, Texas : memories media and material culture of the site of an irredentist rebellionGarza, Eunice Carmela 24 February 2015 (has links)
El Plan de San Diego is the name of an important document in Texas history, but the document and surrounding history is usually discussed with little or no reference to the town of San Diego, Texas, the people who lived there, or the cultural landscape. The Plan de San Diego is an unsuccessful rebellion that is one of the few documented irredentist revolts in U.S. History, it is also a written document calling for return of lands in a multi-ethnic call to arms advocating the recovery of territory by people of Mexican descent in 1915, named for the town San Diego, TX. After the discovery of this Plan, Mexican-Americans were persecuted, violently suppressed, and murdered: 300-5,000 people of Mexican descent died violently following the discovery and publication of the Plan de San Diego in what historians have called the “Bandit Wars”. San Diego, Texas residents and the entire U.S.-Mexican borderlands changed after the discovery of the Plan. My research investigates the political landscape and changes in material and cultural assemblages during and after the Plan, examining how descendant communities retained ties to place and remembered this event in the community of San Diego. Archival research, Historical archaeology and media representations of San Diego explore expose the everyday lives, settlement patterns, and subsistence strategies of the residents of San Diego before and after 1915, showing the material and social effects of the failed rebellion. The socio-political landscape that helped create Mexican-American culture in San Diego is a silenced, violent, and misunderstood chapter of Texas history that shapes the current borderlands and contributes important insights into the study of sites of rebellion and retaliation worldwide.

Lima Celebrates the Immaculate Conception (1656): Creole Text and City Powers / Lima festeja a la Inmaculada (1656): texto criollo y poderes urbanosLatasa, Pilar 12 April 2018 (has links)
Analysis of the festivities of the Immaculate Conception celebrated in Lima in 1656, from the account written by Diego de León Pinelo Gutiérrez. This Creole text reinterprets in baroque terms the cult of the Immaculate Conception in the City of Kings. Through it we can study these lengthy festivals, which involved the participation of the city’s most important institutions and corporate bodies, mobilizing considerable resources and people. Thus, the text is conceived as a political and religious exaltation of the city of Lima, typical of the festive genre and of the chorographic literature, which also connects with the emerging Creole discourse.

The text discusses the work, the sources of information and the readings which governed its composition. In particular, we sought to analyze how Durán wove his narrative while using different records and historical traditions and the weight these have had on the final outcome of the work. By contextualizing the layers of reading and making of the document, the analysis noticed that despite the biblical perspective guided the Dominican on indigenous history, European and American traditions were resignified when put together in the Historia de las Indias / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

Reassessing Mixed Identity Constructs in California : hybrid Culture in the San Diego Area (1770-1920)Swartwood, Jeffrey Neil 10 December 2013 (has links)
In the field of borderland studies, both theoretical and historical works have contributed to a growing body of analysis that seeks both qualitatively and quantitatively to define the mechanics of group construction and interaction along the U.S./Mexican border. The majority of these works have focused on either, historically, an apology for the Anglo-American conquest of the border region and thus a minimization of the pluralistic composition of border culture or, more recently, a theoretical deconstruction of the colonial border dynamic which favors the minority contributions and condition, notably in Hispanic and Chicano studies. In both cases, the nuances and regional specificities of interaction are downplayed in favor of encompassing theoretical or historical positionings. While not seeking to devalue or to disregard this rich analytical heritage, our thesis strives to expand upon the existing body of borderland study work by focusing on the region of San Diego, California during the formative period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries using recent developments in multiple disciplines as well as revisiting the canonic sources. Our objective is to answer questions such as the following: In the light of current research, and viewed through the prism of representations of personal and community identity constructs, can the historic regional culture of San Diego be viewed as unique and essentially hybrid in nature? If so, how does the revision of this historic culture affect the construction and interpretation of contemporary borderland theories as it applies to this site? What are the implications and stakes for a rapidly developing region – culturally, economically, and politically? In order to answer these questions, a historical contextualization has been established that focuses on the themes of hybridity and mixity. A detailed description and analysis are then made of the regional population and the physical living and working spaces created by it, both in terms of general trends and specific case studies of emblematic architectural site and key historic figures during each of the successive periods of regional governance: Spanish, Mexican and United States. The results of these studies are examined through the optic of canonic historical viewpoints and contemporary theoretical paradigms of borderland study, subjecting them to a broader discussion and placing them within the context of current demographic, socio-economic, and political change. The results of our study favors a complexification of the analysis of interactions and identity constructs along the U.S.-Mexican border, with increasing recognition of hybrid constructs in local spheres.

Baroclinicity, forcing mechanism and prediction of chemical propagation of San Diego Bay and their effects on naval applicationsKyriakidis, Kleanthis 06 1900 (has links)
Both instantaneous current and chemical propagation predictions are of utmost importance for all littoral naval operations, including diving, amphibious and mine warfare ones. Undoubtedly, the operating limits and environmental thresholds are crucial and highly reliant on the accuracy and precision of the predictions. San Diego Bay is important because it hosts a large part of the U.S. fleet and has special ecological significance. A hydrodynamic model, "Water Quality Management and Analysis Package" (WQMAP), is used to predict the instantaneous currents with various forcing functions (tides, winds, and lateral boundary fluxes) and a hydrochemical model, "Chemical Management and Analysis Package", (CHEMMAP) to predict the water contamination and to simulate chemical attacks/accidents in San Diego Bay, which raise considerations regarding public health, economy, ecology or even national security. The study shows the barotropic nature of San Diego Bay, the slight significance of wind and the vulnerability of a semi-enclosed tidal basin in a possible chemical attack or accident. Simultaneously, it evaluates and uses two models used by NAVOCEANO. / Hellenic Navy author.

This is a historical-epistemological study on the XVII-XVIII century's probabilism developed in Colonial America, especially in Peru, based on Diego de Avendaño's first volume of his Thesaurus Indicus. It is divided into three sections: Background; moral tension in the colonies, and the Thesaurus Indicus . Besides seeing the historical significance and influence of this moral system in the Spanish colonies, enters into the problem of moral systems, with particular emphasis on probabilism and exposes as an illustration, not without knowing a little of Diego de Avendaño, the management of justice in the Indias, reported in Volume I of the Thesaurus . We conclude that the work in study is totally permeated by the probabilism.

Tapping the oceans : the political ecology of seawater desalination and the water-energy nexus in Southern California and Baja CaliforniaWilliams, Joseph January 2017 (has links)
Notions of connectivity and relationality increasingly pervade theories, discourses and practices of environmental governance. Recently, the concept of the 'resource nexus' has emerged as an important new framework that emphasises the interconnections, tensions and synergies between sectors that have traditionally been managed separately. Part of a broader trend towards integrated environmental governance, nexus thinking rests on the premise that the challenges facing water, energy, food and other resources are inexorably connected and contingent. Although presenting itself as a radically new framework, the nexus discourse in current form is techno-managerial in character, profoundly de-politicising, and reinforces neoliberal approaches to environmental governance. At the same time, the 'material turn' in social science research has re-engaged ideas of social, political and material relationality to understand the complexity and heterogeneity of the socio-natural condition in the twenty-first century. Although theoretically and ontologically diverse, the fields of political ecology, assemblage thinking and infrastructure studies all critically interrogate the politics of relationality. Mobilising an urban political ecology framework, and drawing on notions of emergence and distributed agency from assemblage thinking, this research examines the politics of the water-energy nexus through a critical analysis of the extraordinary emergence of seawater desalination as a significant new urban water supply for Southern California, USA, and Baja California, Mexico. Research was conducted in the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan region, where a large desalting facility has recently been completed to supply San Diego with purified ocean water, and a larger 'binational' facility is planned in Mexico to supply both sides of the border. The research makes three broad contributions. First, to understand desalination as emerging from the historical coproduction and urbanisation of water and energy in the American West. Second, to examine the transitioning environmental politics concomitant with calls for greater understanding of interrelationality. And third, to interrogate the efficacy of technology in reconfiguring the co-constitution of water, energy and society.
