Liljegren, Samantha, Wessling, Stina January 2020 (has links)
Background: Pain assessments are a recurring task in nurse anesthetists and intensive care nurses’ daily work. Previous studies have revealed that there was an ignorance toward patients who are sedated, that their pain did not need to be assessed, despite other studies have found that patients can experience pain during sedation or general anesthesia.  Aim: To describe nurse anesthetists’ and intensive care nurses’ experiences in assessing and documenting pain in patients who are sedated or under general anesthesia and non- verbal. Method: A descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten specialist nurses from a Swedish hospital. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Five categories and seven subcategories were identified: “To experience difficulties and obstacles when assessing pain”, “To ease the assessment of pain”, “To not have the aids for assessing pain”, “To document pain” and “To rely on previous experiences, pre-understandings and knowledge”. The nurse specialists experienced that pain assessments were complex because the patients were unable to communicate. Previous experiences and expanded knowledge appeared to ease the assessment of pain. There were experiences of pain being sedated away due to ignorance. Documentation of the patients’ pain was mainly done through physiological parameters and given analgesics.  Conclusion: The present study shines a light on the wish for aids and education to use when assessing pain, as well as the potential impact the assessment instruments could have for the patients as well as the work at the clinic. Nurse specialists stated that an aid could contribute to the controlled use of analgesics and sedatives, which could reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation, duration in the intensive care unit and mortality.
