Conception et validation de dispositifs à base de polymères conducteurs pour enregistrements électrophysiologiques / Conducting polymer devices for human electrophysiological recordings

Il existe un réel besoin de développer des matériaux et des technologies avancés pour améliorer l’interface avec le cerveau humain. De tels enregistrements électrophysiologiques sont nécessaires pour des fins diagnostiques ou dans des domaines innovants tels que l’interface homme/machine. Les dispositifs issus de l’électronique organique représentent des alternatives prometteuses grâce à leurs propriétés mécaniques et leur biocompatibilité. L’utilisation de polymères conducteurs ouvre la voie vers une nouvelle interface avec le milieu biologique. Ce travail présente un procédé de fabrication innovant permettant d’intégrer le polymère conducteur PEDOT:PSS sur des électrodes sèches pour une application à l’électroencéphalographie (EEG). L’étape suivante consiste en l’utilisation d’un dispositif actif tel que le transistor organique électrochimique (OECT) afin de profiter de l’amplification locale qu’il permet. Cette dernière est extrêmement importante dans le cas de la neurophysiologie, domaine dans lequel l’amplitude des signaux enregistrés est très basse. En ce sens, l’intégration d’OECTs à des dispositifs d’enregistrement de signaux neuronaux a montré un bien supérieur rapport signal / bruit (SNR) en comparaison à des électrodes conventionnelles. La bioélectronique est un domaine innovant à applications variées. Cette thèse présente la conception et la validation par l’application de dispositifs organiques dans le domaine des neurosciences. D’autres progrès dans les domaines du diagnostic, des biocapteurs, ou de la distribution de médicaments pavent la voie pour de nouvelles applications dans l’agroalimentaire ou encore la qualité de l’eau ou de l’air. / There is a tremendous need for developing advanced materials technologies for interfacing with brain and record neural activity. Such electrophysiological recordings are necessary for diagnostic purposes and brain/machine interfaces. Among the existing technologies, organic electronic devices constitute a promising candidate because of their mechanical flexibility and biocompatibility. The use of conducting polymers, which allow both ionic and electronic transport, allows new modes for interfacing with the biological milieu. This work presents an innovative process to incorporate the conducting polymer poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene: poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) onto electrodes for applications in electroencephalography (EEG). A step beyond conducting polymer electrodes is provided by the Organic Electrochemical Transistor (OECT). The primary advantage of using active devices is the local amplification they provide. This local amplification becomes extremely important in the case of electrophysiological signals, for which the amplitude is very low. The use of the OECT for various electrophysiological measurements is presented, done for clinical purposes like ECG or EEG, for new marketing studies like EOG, and for more fundamental neurological applications, like the recording in vitro of neuronal unitary activity. Bioelectronics is an inspiring field with broad scope. This thesis deals with applications of organic electronic devices in neuroscience. Other applications in diagnostics, biosensing, or drug delivery will offer huge opportunities for food safety, pollution control or even environmental applications.

Conversion of methane and carbon dioxide on porous catalytic membranes / Conversion du méthane et du dioxyde de carbone sur des membranes poreuses catalytiques

L’étude concerne un nouveau procédé de reformage du gaz naturel en gaz de synthèse par le dioxyde de carbone (RSM), en vue de l'utilisation rationnelle des déchets carbonés industriels pour la production d'hydrocarbures et d'hydrogène. Cette méthode utilise des systèmes à membranes catalytiques inorganiques (SMC) qui favorisent des réactions catalytiques hétérogènes en phase gazeuse dans des micro-canaux céramiques. La surface active des catalyseurs formés à l'intérieur des canaux est faible en termes de superficie, mais elle est caractérisée par une valeur élevée du facteur Surface/Volume du catalyseur, qui induit une efficacité importante de la catalyse hétérogène. Les SMC, formés à partir de dérivés alcoxy et des précurseurs métalliques complexes, contiennent de 0,008 à 0,055% en masse de nano-composants mono- et bimétalliques actifs répartis uniformément dans les canaux. Pour les systèmes [La-Ce]-MgO-Ti02/Ni-Al et Pd-Mn-Ti02/Ni-Al, les productivités de 10500 et 7500 1/h·dm3membr. ont été respectivement obtenues lors du RSM dès 450°C avec une composition de gaz de synthèse H2/?? allant de 0,63 à 1,25 et un taux de conversion de 50% de la charge CH4/CO2 (1/1). Ainsi les SMC sont d’un ordre de grandeur plus efficace qu’un réacteur à lit fixe du même catalyseur. Le RSM est initié par l'oxydation de CH4 par l'oxygène de structure des oxydes métalliques présents en surface, et le CO2 réagit avec le carbone finement divisé provenant de la dissociation de CH4. Une synergie catalytique a été mise en évidence pour le système Pd-Mn. Ces SMC de 108 pores par cm² de surface constituent un ensemble de nano réacteurs de fort potentiel industriel (synthèse d’oléfines, biomasse) / This study reports the development of a new process to convert methane and carbon dioxide (dry methane reforming - DMR) into valuable products such as syngas from non-oil resources. The practical interest is to produce syngas from carbon containing exhaust industrial gases. This process uses membrane catalytic systems (MCS) that support heterogeneous catalytic reactions in gaseous phase in ceramic micro-channels. The active surface of the catalysts formed inside the micro-channels is low in term of area, but it is characterized by a high value of the catalyst surface/volume ratio, which induces a high efficiency of heterogeneous catalysis. The SMC are formed from alkoxy derivatives and precursor metal complex containing between 0.008 and 0.055% by weight of nano-components mono-and bimetallic active distributed evenly in the channels. For systems [La-Ce] -MgO-Ti02/Ni-Al and Pd-Mn-Ti02/Ni-Al, productivities of 10500 and 7500 l/h · dm3 membr. were respectively obtained by RSM at 450°C with a composition of syngas H2/?? ranging from 0.63 to 1.25 and a conversion rate of 50% with a CH4/CO2 (1/1) feed. Thus the CMS is an order of magnitude more efficient than a fixed bed reactor of the same catalyst. The MDR is initiated by the oxidation of CH4 by structural oxygen of metal oxides available on the surface, and the CO2 reacts with the finely divided carbon arising from the dissociation of CH4. A catalytic synergy has been demonstrated for the system Pd-Mn. This CMS, having 108 pores per cm² of surface, can be considered as a set of nano reactors. Thus this new approach is very promising for industry (synthesis of olefins, uses of biomass)

The aim of this master´s thesis is to find out whether dry skin type influences the consumer´s satisfaction with his appearance and whether possible dissatisfaction can arouse purchase behaviour in meaning of purchasing and consuming miosturizing skin care products. Based on findings, thesis proposes next target to compose corresponding orientation of marketing communication for selected segment. Thesis follows a concept of concentrated marketing, which starts with market segmentation of consumers with dry skin type in analytical tool Data Analyzer and continues with selection of one particular segment to get a focuse on. After target segment is selected, questionnaire survey is used to enhance its profile. The thesis is finished up with draft of marketing orientation for selected segment. This marketing orientation captures the results of relation between dry skin type and body image revealed from data analysis MML-TGI and questionnaire investigation.

Fluxes of nitrogen in a semi-natural ecosystem

Nitrogen (N) is known to be a limiting factor in peatlands and as such, the vegetation present has adapted to living in low N conditions. This makes such ecosystems particularly vulnerable to increases in the deposition of reactive N (Nr), which may result in significant changes to its biodiversity and biogeochemistry. Since the industrial revolution, the amount of anthropogenic Nr globally has increased from ~15 Tg N y-1 in the 1860’s to ~187 Tg N y-1 in 2005, and is estimated to reach ~267 Tg N yr-1 by 2050 (Galloway et al. 2004, Galloway et al. 2008). Consequences include acidification, loss of biodiversity, changes in vegetation, N-saturation, eutrophication, health impacts and the release of greenhouse gases.Objectives of this thesis were (i) to measure key components of the N-budget at Auchencorth Moss, a Scottish moorland, for a two year period (Jan 2009 – Dec 2010) and (ii) to compare current deposition rates with those measured 14/15 years previously. Annual fluxes of N inputs were estimated from measurements of wet only deposition, estimates of N-fixation deposition and from atmospheric deposition modelled from hourly concentrations of N containing gases and aerosols. Exports were estimated from stream measurements and from atmospheric emissions modelled from hourly concentrations. Organic N is often an underreported part of the N-cycle, but the results presented here suggest it is an important part of the N story. An attempt to identify (dissolved organic nitrogen) DON compounds in both precipitation and stream water was made using GC×GC-NCD. Ten unique compounds were detected, of which only five could be identified: pyrrole, benzonitrile, dodecylamine, N-nitrosodipropylamine and decylamine. Pyrrole, benzonitrile and three unknown compounds were present in both precipitation and stream samples. Ammonia (NH3) fluxes were measured over a 7 month period in 2009 using a wet-chemistry gradient system with online analysis and calculated with the aerodynamic gradient method. The results were used to refine a bi-directional dynamic exchange model. Several parameters were updated, including an increased stomatal emission potential from 180 to 350, a reduction of the minimum cuticular resistance (Rw,min) used to calculate Rw from 20 s m-1 to 15 s m-1 and an increase in the leaching rate (Kr¬) from the leaf surfaces from -0.01 to -0.1 s-1. The exchange parameterisations used to estimate HNO3, HONO and the aerosol compounds were taken from the literature and earlier studies at the site.Overall, Auchencorth was found to accumulate N, with deposition exceeding export by -1.61 kg N ha-1 yr-1. The main N deposition was from NH3, followed by wet deposition of ammonium. DON, which is not routinely included in N budgets, contributed 6.5% of total deposition. The largest loss of N was as DON via the stream with N losses of -5.31 kg N ha-1 yr-1 or 71.8% of total export. Between 1995 and 2009/2010, deposition decreased by 0.81 kg N ha-1 yr-1, with the wet deposition of inorganic nitrogen decreasing by 25.2%, but dry deposition increasing by 12.5%. DON, N2O and N-fixation were not included in the comparison as they were not measured in 1995.This thesis has demonstrated that DON is an important parameter in the overall N budget, and should be routinely measured when assessing the N status of ecosystems.

Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy versus myofascial dry needling of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and a combination thereof on cervicogenic headaches

M.Tech. / OBJECTIVE: An association between cervicogenic headache, cervical joint dysfunction and the presence of myofascial trigger points in the sternocleidomastoid muscle exists. This study is aimed at determining the most effective Chiropractic treatment protocol in the management of cervicogenic headache by comparing the objective and subjective measurements gained in delivering Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy to the upper cervical spine, myofascial dry needling therapy to myofascial trigger points in the sternocleidomastoid muscle and/or a combination of both therapies. DESIGN: Forty-eight participants suffering from cervicogenic headache were allocated into one of three groups of equal male to female ratio. Each patient was examined and cleared for participation in a clinical trial in which Diversified Chiropractic techniques and/or myofascial dry needling therapy were delivered. Group 1 received Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy to the upper cervical spine. Group 2 received myofascial dry needling therapy to myofascial trigger points in the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Group 3 received a combination of the mentioned therapies. DURATION AND MEASUREMENTS: Participants were consulted seven times in a four week period. They were treated twice per week for three weeks and a final, follow-up assessment was performed at the start of the fourth week. Subjective and objective measurements were taken and recorded on the first, fourth and seventh consultations. Subjective measurements were taken via the Vernon-Mior Neck Pain and Disability Questionnaire, Triple Visual Analogue Scale and the Headache Disability Index. Objective measurements included cervical spine ranges of motion which were measured using the Cervical Range of Motion Instrument (CROM). The data was statistically analysed using the Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Friedman and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests. RESULTS: Clinically and statistically significant improvements in all three groups were noted over the course of the study, with regards to perception of pain, disability and cervical spine range of motion. Statistically significant changes in ranges of motion were demonstrated in Group 1 for flexion, extension, lateral flexion (right and left) and right rotation; in Group 2 for right lateral flexion and left rotation and in Group 3 for all cervical ranges of motion. The comparison between the groups (intergroup analysis) showed no statistically significant changes except for right lateral flexion at the first consultation (pre-treatment). CONCLUSION: The results show that Chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy and dry needling are both effective treatment protocols in decreasing pain and dysfunction and increasing cervical range of motion in patients suffering from cervicogenic headache. This was demonstrated clinically, and to a lesser degree, statistically. The results carry a possible suggestion that although the different treatment options are effective individually, no treatment option proves to be statistically superior.

Relating consumer preferences to sensory and physicochemical properties of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

The dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important grain legume that is used for human consumption worldwide. In Africa and other parts of the World, legume diets contribute tremendously to protein and energy requirements of consumers. Dry beans provide about 16- 33% protein, dietary fibre (between 14 and 19%), starch, minerals and vitamins. Dry beans have a long storage life and can be cooked as whole grains, fried or dehulled and splitted for production of dhal and salads. There is a tremendous variability in the dry bean varieties. It is believed that consumer preferences for dry beans are influenced by factors such as seed size, seed colour, cooking time and flavour. Although, substantial research has been done on physicochemical properties, description of sensory properties that differentiate bean varieties specifically in terms of liked or disliked flavours was lacking. Sensory evaluation is one of the methods used for evaluating product quality and it can be used to describe the sensory properties of a product (i.e. descriptive sensory evaluation) and determines its acceptability by consumers (i.e. consumer acceptability or preferences). Physicochemical properties and descriptive sensory evaluation of six dry bean varieties (Jenny, Kranskop, PAN 148, AC Calmont, PAN 150 and Mkuzi) from Mpumalanga (MP) and Free State (FS) locations of South Africa were determined. Significant (p<0.05) variety, location as well as location x variety interaction effects were found for both physicochemical and sensory properties of beans. Of the six bean varieties, Jenny (FS), Mkuzi and PAN 148 (MP) beans had relatively long cooking times (>60 min) using a Mattson Bean Cooker. PAN 150 beans from both locations were described as bitter, soapy and metallic with a raw bean flavour. Mkuzi beans were mostly described as having a soapy mouthfeel. Jenny (MP), Kranskop (MP&FS) were sweet, soft and with a cooked bean flavour. Consumer sensory evaluation revealed that beans with sweet, soft and cooked bean flavours were the most preferred. Beans that took long to cook and those that were described as bitter, soapy and metallic in the mouth, received low consumer ratings on a 9-point hedonic scale. The total polyphenol content of PAN 150 (MP), along with Jenny and AC Calmont from MP was determined to find out whether the bitterness was associated with its polyphenol concentration. PAN 150 beans had the lowest concentration of total polyphenols compared to the two other varieties, suggesting that factors other than total polyphenol content caused the bitterness of these beans. A follow up investigation of mineral profiles in whole bean flour of all six bean varieties from the two locations was done to find out whether differences in mineral content e.g. iron (Fe) contributed to bitterness and metallic mouthfeel of certain beans. Results showed significant (p< 0.05) variety differences for phosphorous (P) and significant (p< 0.05) location differences for magnesium (Mn) only. Fe and copper (Cu) contents did not contribute to bitterness or metallic mouthfeel of PAN 150 beans. For maximum consumer acceptability, farmers should concentrate on the production of beans that have characteristics similar to Kranskop (MP&FS), PAN 148 (FS) and Jenny (MP) beans. As bean hardening was suspected in Jenny (FS), PAN 148 (MP) and Mkuzi (MP), the importance of storing beans at proper temperatures (e.g. less than 35ºC) and relative humidity (e.g. < 75 %) should be emphasized to minimize the development of the hard-to-cook defect over long storage periods. / Dissertation (MSc(Agric))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Food Science / unrestricted

Avaliação do desempenho de diferentes tipos de cobertura seca aplicados a depósitos de rejeitos de carvão

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho de diferentes tipos de coberturas secas utilizadas em células experimentais preenchidas com rejeitos piritosos de carvão mineral. Quatro células de igual dimensão foram preenchidas com rejeitos piritosos, provenientes do beneficiamento de carvão mineral da Unidade Mineira II – Verdinho, pertencente à Carbonífera Criciúma S.A., situada no município de Forquilhinha, Estado de Santa Catarina. Em relação à composição das células, a primeira foi construída sem cobertura; a segunda, com somente pré-cobertura, constituída de mistura de rejeitos; a terceira, com cobertura de argila compactada; e a quarta elaborada com sistema de barreira capilar dupla. Todas foram expostas às mesmas condições meteorológicas. Para avaliação do desempenho das coberturas analisou-se o volume e características químicas e físico-químicas da água de percolação no período compreendido entre 2009 e 2010. Os parâmetros físicoquímicos considerados foram os seguintes: pH, Eh, acidez, alcalinidade e condutividade enquanto que os parâmetros químicos foram Fe, Al, Mn, Zn e sulfato. A partir dos resultados obtidos, fez-se uma análise técnica dos diferentes tipos de cobertura seca utilizados. De acordo com análise técnica constatou-se que o melhor desempenho no tocante ao volume e à qualidade da água percolada ocorreu na célula em que se utilizou cobertura com argila compactada e na célula em que se empregou cobertura do tipo barreira capilar dupla. / This work aimed to evaluate the performance of different types of dry cover employed in experimental cells filled with pyritic waste of mineral coal. Four cells with the same dimension were filled with coal tailings from the coal preparation plant of Unidade Mineira II –Verdinho, which belongs to Carbonífera Criciúma SA, located in Forquilhinha, Santa Catarina State. The first cell was constructed without any kind of cover, the second one was built with a cover composed by a mixture of coal wastes, the third one was built with a layer of compacted clay, and the forth one was constructed with a system composed by a dual-capillary barrier. All were exposed to the same meteorological conditions. To evaluate the performances of dry covers we analyzed the volume and the chemical and physicochemical characteristics of seepage between 2009 and 2010. The water was analyzed in terms of pH, Eh, acidity, alkalinity, conductivity and the concentration of Fe, Al, Mn, Zn, and sulfate. The experimental results showed that the best performance concerning the volume and the quality of the percolated water was obtained in the cell that received a cover of compacted clay and in the one that received a cover composed by dualcapillary barrier.

Em escala local, essa disponibilidade pode variar dependendo da localização dos indivíduos em clareiras, sua posição no relevo e a composição do solo. Em escala regional, variações relacionadas ao volume e distribuição das chuvas, aliadas às alterações climáticas sazonais, podem também gerar diferentes condições de déficit hídrico, aumentando as taxas de mortalidade das espécies arbóreas mais sensíveis, em especial no estádio de plântula. Considerando o cenário mundial de mudanças climáticas, torna-se urgente a compreensão dos mecanismos que determinam a ecologia das comunidades das florestas tropicais, principalmente em relação aos padrões de chuvas e secas. Neste trabalho analisamos as diferentes estratégias de resistência à seca de plântulas de espécies arbóreas, com o objetivo de entender como diferentes espécies arbóreas respondem à variação da disponibilidade hídrica, de modo a conhecer como essa variação filtra as espécies e conseqüentemente contribui para organizar a comunidade florestal. No primeiro capítulo apresentamos as principais estratégias de resistência à seca e as possíveis abordagens teóricas, descritas na literatura, para plântulas de espécies arbóreas, demonstrando a importância dessas estratégias na distribuição, abundância e coexistência de espécies nas florestas tropicais. As diferenças entre as florestas tropicais úmidas e secas, pelo baixo compartilhamento de espécies e os diferentes graus de resistência à seca apresentados por espécies arbóreas, indicam uma clara diferenciação de nichos. Espécies mais resistentes à seca ocupam, com maior abundância, locais mais secos, quando comparadas às espécies mais sensíveis, tanto em escala local quanto regional. Estratégias de resistência à seca podem ser de dois tipos: de tolerância à dessecação e de evitação à dessecação. No estádio de plântula, estratégias de tolerância parecem ser mais determinantes para a resistência à seca, principalmente a presença de caracteres que conferem tolerância a baixos potenciais hídricos, como resistência à cavitação. No segundo capítulo investigamos a hipótese de que há uma relação entre a abundância de algumas espécies em locais com diferentes intensidades de sombreamento e/ou sua posição na vertente (com provável gradiente hídrico) da Floresta Estacional Semidecídua e a presença de estratégias fisiológicas de trocas de gases relacionadas à resistência à seca. Avaliamos a troca de gases, dessecação e rebrota de plantas de duas espécies tardias (Esenbeckia leiocarpa e Astronium graveolens) e duas espécies pioneiras (Croton floribundus e Aegiphila selowiana) em um experimento de seca súbita em casa de vegetação. Encontramos maior resistência à seca nas espécies com maior abundância e de estádio sucessional tardio (E. leiocarpa e A. graveolens). A resistência à seca esteve associada às menores taxas de troca de gases, e as espécies com maior aproveitamento fotossintético exibiram menor resistência à seca. Essas espécies ocorrem mais abundantemente nos sítios de ocupação menos sombreados, reforçando a teoria de uma demanda conflitante para espécies que ou investem em resistência à seca ou na capacidade de aproveitamento de luz. A disponibilidade sazonal de água, assim como a diferença de luz entre as diferentes ecounidades, pode explicar a coexistência das espécies na floresta estacional / Abstract: The rainfall is high in tropical forests, but there is great variation in water availability to plants. On a local scale, this availability may vary depending on the location of individuals in gaps, their position in the landscape and soil composition. On a regional scale, variations related to the volume and distribution of rainfall, coupled with seasonal climatic changes, can also generate different water stress conditions, increasing the mortality rates of tree species most sensitive, especially at the seedling stage. Considering the global scenario of climatic changes, it is imperative to understand the mechanisms that determine the ecology of communities of tropical forests, especially in relation to patterns of rainfall and drought. We examined different strategies of drought resistance of seedlings of tree species, to determine the organization of the community and the contribution of water availability to the selection of species in these forests. The first chapter presents a review of the principal studies available on strategies for drought resistance in seedlings of tree species and the possible theoretical approaches, demonstrating the increasing importance of these studies for understanding the processes that determine the distribution, abundance and species coexistence in tropical forests. The differences between wet and dry tropical forests, in view of the low number of species in common and the different degrees of drought resistance presented by the tree species present, show a clear differentiation of niches. Species more resistant to drought present higher abundance in drier sites, compared to more sensitive species, at local and regional levels. Strategies for drought resistance may be of two kinds: desiccation tolerance and avoidance of desiccation. In the seedling stage tolerance strategies seem to be more crucial for resistance to drought, especially the presence of characteristics that confer tolerance to low water potentials, as resistance to cavitation. In the second chapter we investigated the hypothesis that there is a relationship between the existence of abundant species only at certain sites of the semi-deciduous forest and the presence of physiological strategies of gas exchange related to drought resistance. We evaluated the gas exchange process and desiccation and regrowth of plants of four species (Esenbeckia leiocarpa, Astronium graveolens, Croton floribundus and Aegiphila selowiana), during a sudden drought experiment in a greenhouse. E. leiocarpa, A. graveolens are late-successional species and C. floribundus and A. selowiana are pioneers species. We found greater resistance to drought in the most abundant and latesuccessional species. The drought resistance was associated with lower rates of gas exchange. Species with higher photosynthetic efficiency showed lower resistance to drought. These species occur most abundantly on sites less shaded, reinforcing the theory of a trade off between investment in drought resistance and ability to use light. Eukaryotic diversity of miers valley hypoliths

Cracks and fissures in translucent quartz rocks permit an adequate amount of penetrating light, sufficient water and nutrients to support cryptic microbial development. Hypolithons colonizing the ventral surface of these quartz rocks have been classified into three types: cyanobacterial dominated (Type I),moss dominated (Type II) and lichenized (Type III) communities. Eukaryotic microbial communities were reported to represent only a minor fraction of Antarctic communities. In this study, culture independent techniques (DGGE, T-RFLP and clone library construction) were employed to determine the profile of the dominant eukaryotes, fungi and microalgae present in the three different hypolithic communities. The 18S rRNA gene (Euk for eukaryotes), internal transcribed spacer (ITS for fungi) and microalgal specific regions of the 18S rRNA gene, were the phylogenetic markers targeted for PCR amplification from hypolith metagenomic DNA. Results suggest that the three hypolith types are characterized by different eukaryotic, fungal and microalgal communities, as implied by nMDS analysis of the DGGE and T-RFLP profiles. Sequence analysis indicates close affiliation to members of Amoebozoa, Alveolata, Rhizaria (general eukaryote), Ascomycota (fungal) and Streptophyta (microalgal). Many of these clones may represent novel species. This study demonstrates that Dry Valley hypolithons harbour higher eukaryote diversity than previously recognised.Each hypolithon is colonized by specialized microbial communities with possible keystone species. The ecological role of the detected microorganisms in the hypolith environment is also theorized, and a trophic hierarchy postulated.

[en] TARGET TRACKING SYSTEM MOUNTED IN A MOVING BODY / [pt] SISTEMA DE ACOMPANHAMENTO DE ALVOS MONTADO EM UM CORPO EM MOVIMENTO

[pt] Neste trabalho estuda-se um sistema de acompanhamento de alvos, também conhecido como sistema de rastreamento de alvos, do tipo pan-tilt atuado por motores de corrente contínua e fixo em um corpo em movimento. Para tanto é montada uma bancada de testes e implementa-se um programa de simulação. A modelagem para o programa é feita no domínio do tempo, permitindo a utilização de equações bastante complexas para representar o sistema, o que não é possível quando se utiliza modelos no domínio da freqüência. Apesar de se modelar o sistema com corpos rígidos, flexibilidades e amortecimentos estruturais devido aos redutores de velocidade são considerados. Erros nos sensores, folgas nos redutores, atritos seco e viscoso, limites de saturação para as correntes e tensões nas armaduras dos motores também são considerados. Um método para a inclusão dos atrasos de tempo para atualização dos sinais de controle e dados obtidos pelos sensores durante a integração numérica das equações de movimento é apresentado. Para controlar o sistema utilizam-se controladores que não requerem o modelo matemático da planta, tanto na bancada de testes como no programa de simulação. Três tipos diferentes de arquitetura de controle são propostas, chamadas neste trabalho de tipo 1, tipo 2 e tipo 3. A complexidade delas aumenta à medida que mais sensores estão disponíveis no sistema. A arquitetura do tipo 1 destina-se a sistemas onde se possui apenas sensores que fornecem os erros angulares de azimute e elevação do alvo. Se, além deste sensor, também houver sensores para medir as posições angulares relativas entre os elos do mecanismo usa-se a arquitetura do tipo 2. Se houver, ainda, sensores de velocidades angulares inerciais pode-se utilizar a arquitetura do tipo 3. Por fim são apresentados resultados de experimentos e simulações onde se compara o desempenho do sistema com cada tipo de arquitetura de controle. / [en] A study on a pan-tilt type target tracking system actuated by permanent magnet DC motors and assembled in a moving body is presented in this work. To achieve such objective, an experimental test bed is constructed and a simulation program is implemented. The mechanical model is derived and simulated in time domain. This approach allows using accurate non-linear equations to represent system behavior, otherwise infeasible in frequency domain. Although the system is modeled with rigid bodies, flexibility and structural damping due to the gearboxes are considered. Sensor errors, backlash in the gearboxes, dry and viscous friction, saturation limits for armature current and tension of the motors are also considered. A method to include the time delays for the control signal updates, as well as time delays due to sensor dynamic response, during the numerical integration of the equations of motion, is presented. Controllers that require no mathematical model of the plant are employed in the experimental test bed and in the simulation program. Three different control architectures are proposed, called in this work type 1, type 2 and type 3. Their complexity increases depending on the number of available sensors. The type 1 is applied to systems with only one sensor that provides the targets angular azimuth and elevation errors. If, besides this sensor, sensors to measure the relative angular positions between the mechanism links are available type 2 architecture is used. In addition, if sensors to measure inertial angular speeds are also available, type 3 architecture can be used. Finally, experimental and numerical results, comparing system performance with each control architecture are presented.
