An examination of the prevalence of obesity and student performance in a low socioeconomic school districtHillones, Mary L 09 August 2008 (has links)
Since few studies exist that examine the relationships between adolescent obesity and academic performance, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of obesity on high school students’ academic performance in a low socioeconomic school district. The topics addressed in this study included prevalence of overweight and obesity in high school students and the impact of overweight and obesity on student academic performance. The potential population of this study consisted of 236 high school students aged 14 to 19 years old enrolled in a rural Mississippi school district in grades 9 -12. However, only 35 students had usable data in all of the categories that were examined, and, therefore, were used as the population for the final analysis. The participants studied in this study consisted of all students assigned to one physical education teacher. Each student was administered the Project Health Student Measurement Chart which was developed by Project Health, a research entity of the Institute of Epidemiology, Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi. The Project Health Student Measurement Chart was utilized to enable the participating students to be examined on characteristics that included Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and pulse rate. Student information collected on their obesity status based on BMI level was also collected in this study. In addition, the students’ performances on subject area tests and/or end-of-course assessments in the academic areas of Algebra I, English II, Biology I, and U.S. History from 1877 were accessed from the school’s records. Based on the results of this study, 48.60% of the students in the Canton Public School District are overweight/obese. However, the findings of this study revealed that there was no significant difference between overweight/obese and non-obese students’ academic performance on subject area tests and/or end-of-course test by age, gender and grade, and no significant relationships in the academic performance of overweight/obese and non-obese students on end-of-course test scores for 10th – 12th grades, as measured by Algebra I, English II, Biology I, and US History from 1877.

The Role of District Leaders in Improving Achievement and Equity: How Leaders Reshape District CultureMcLaughlin, Zachary J. January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Vincent Cho / Rorrer, Skrla, and Scheurich (2008) proposed a theory that district leaders enact several essential roles when engaging in systemic reform that both improves achievement and equity. Their theory identified reshaping district culture as one of these essential functions in systemic reform. This case study explored how leaders in one Massachusetts public school district, which has demonstrated signs of improving achievement and equity, attempted to reshape district culture. Drawing primarily upon semi-structured interviews, this study found that while these leaders reported using a variety of methods to assess the culture, the district has limited systems-level thinking about their culture. Similarly, these leaders each made their own choices amongst shaping strategies ranging from focusing on subgroup dynamics to empowering early followers. Recommendations include the development of additional training for leaders in the small group facilitation necessary to uncover shared underlying assumptions and the creation of a district-level common language concerning culture. / Thesis (EdD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Rebuilding identity: the District Six Museum's involvement in the current redevelopment of the District Six site.Koseff, Lara Simone 05 June 2008 (has links)
This paper examines how and to what extent the District Six Museum
has contributed the current redevelopment of the District Six site.
Since its inception, the Museum has challenged accepted definitions
of heritage and has transcended common museological practices
through its initiative as an institution to go beyond nurturing the
memory of one of the most iconic sites of forced removal in South
Africa, but to also contribute to the site’s redevelopment. The
Museum grew out of an organisation that was dedicated to protecting
the empty wasteland that the District had become since it was
announced a ‘white area’ by the apartheid government and bulldozed.
The same group of people became passionate not only about
protecting the site, and conducting “memory work” surrounding it
but eventually contributing to a process of restitution and rebuilding
the homes and lives of those whose houses where destroyed and
communities were fragmented. This paper considers such an
initiative, which began in a pre-democratic environment where the
concept of heritage was ill-defined and cultural institutions often
served apartheid agendas. This consideration will involve an
examination of the way in which the District Six Museum developed;
the Museum’s role and how this role has evolved and the District Six
that has been re-imagined through the Museum and how this “idea”
is contributing to re-development.

This work is based in Urban Tourism in the city of Sao Paulo and the relation of its tourist mode with the displacements of CBD Central Business District. Based in this point, it is noticeable that as any otherworld metropoles, the city of Sao Paulo tend to be the base of a complex tourist mode. However, the lack of reflex on and promotion of tourism with the lack of public politics help the city not to appear as a tourist destination as it should. This study fundament of literature of general and specific order and on the campus work resulted on the mapping of the area made it clear about the CBDs role and its relation with Urban Tourism. The business centres followed by the infrastructure such as hotels and events areas made it easier to start the investigations about the dynamic of tourism in the city. Based on the existent connection of catering, the spaces for events and attractions, this research reveals the wealthy of the infrastructure and equipments existing in the city of Sao Paulo and a good relation about the offer and migration of the CBD.

Ethnobotany in the Kailash Sacred Landscape, Nepal: Implications for Conservation Through Interactions of Plants, People, Culture and GeographyUnknown Date (has links)
Little is known about the vegetation, forests, useful plants and their patterns of use at the gradients of climate, geography and culture in Baitadi and Darchula districts, far western Nepal. The interactions among plants-people-places were analyzed using data from phyto-sociological studies, community interviews, and literature. Ecological sampling, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and informal discussions were held between February and September 2017. We compared plant collection, use and management of two culturally distinct groups (Baitadi and Darchula), who inhabit different physiographic regions, yet share the same ecological landscape, environmental resources and livelihood challenges. We hypothesized that the salient (visible, apparent and accessible) plants and places are likely to be more frequently foraged than the non-salient ones. We also hypothesized that the elderly, native and traditional healers living in rural and remote physiographic conditions possess more diverse and detailed knowledge of plant use and conservation than young, non-native and non-healer people. A total of 18 forest types including eight from the study districts showed that the study area is rich in forests and plants. A total of 975 plant species including 82 new species records and 23 new use reports to Baitadi and Darchula districts were recorded. There were 305 (31%) useful plant species including 122 useful reported in the present study. The people of study area showed a large repertoire of knowledge that helps them execute different strategies of plant use suited to their environment and geography. The knowledge of plant use follows a pattern according to ecological conditions (availability) as well as the cultural significance (transhumance, settlement) of the landscape. However, the latter prevails. Predominate foraging by the agro-pastoral communities from the remote undisturbed forests for quality products and medicines in Darchula district was divergent from the collections from ruderal areas in Baitadi district by generalist collectors for ritual purposes. The extensive usage of plants for socio-economic reasons, livelihood and rituals indicates that the plants and culture are inseparable. Conservation measures with acknowledgement of human, cultural, geographical and environmental variables, are therefore encouraged for sustainable management of the natural resources and traditional knowledge of the Baitadi and Darchula districts. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

This research raises the question of the effects of industrial policies on the localization of companies, more specifically in the case of France and of foreign companies investing in France. The dissertation studies the elements essential to company localization, first through statistical analysis, by comparing both France’s and French industrial policies’ attraction with countries investing in France; then through an econometric study which identifies the existing determinants of localization, among which we find the industrial policy set up by the administration in order to influence company localization. The statistical and econometric results show that industrial policies such as the company taxation system [Taxe Professionnelle] and the land settlement incentives [Prime d’Aménagement du Territoire] have little impact on company localization.
