Socio-economic impacts of transportation and planning design for Saudi Arabian cities : case study, the central core area of the Algassim RegionAbalkhail, Ahmed Hamad O. January 1992 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to consider the socio-economic impacts of the development of modern transportation in Saudi Arabian urban areas, and thereby to derive guidelines for future planning to minimise damaging impacts. In order to achieve the purpose, a series of studies were undertaken. A theoretical background was constructed from international sources relevant to the socio-economic impacts of transportation. The growth of transportation in Saudi Arabia in general and in particular in the Central Core Area of Algassim Region (The Study Area) was then examined, followed by an explanation of the management of transportation. A survey questionnaire, interviews with government officials and with community leaders, and a traffic count survey, were conducted to obtain information and attitudes regarding the socio-economic impacts of transportation in the study area. From the analysis of the surveys, an evaluation of the strategies was then made and alternative ways of developing a balanced transportation strategy for the study area were considered. A land use transportation plan was produced to demonstrate the relationship between the preferred transportation strategy and the land use activities, and based on the research principles, a land use/transportation concept was formulated. In the light of the conclusions made for the study area, a planning design for Saudi Arabian cities was then recommended as part of more sensitive appreciation of the socio-economic impact of modern transportation developments. Finally, the thesis briefly emphasises the importance of planning co-ordination and of sensitive guidelines for Saudi planners. It also recommended further studies to be carried out.

This paper builds upon Krugman (1991) and Murata and Thisse (2005) to examine the impact of infrastructure investment on regional development, above all regional price indices, the allocation of employment among regions, and the number of consumption goods at each region. Two regions are assumed in the model. While one region has only two sectors, i.e. the housing sector and the manufacturing sector, the other region has the additional sector of infrastructure construction, which improves the efficiency of both inter-regional and intra-regional transactions. Given the assumption that the infrastructure investment in one region may have differential effects upon inter-regional and intra-regional transactions, it is interesting to examine the conditions of its effect on regional development.

The thesis develops a model for deployment of public charging stations for electric vehicles and hybrids in the city of Uppsala in relation to the electricity demand. Areas for deployment of public charging stations has been determined through traffic flow analysis and is displayed in a map over the city of Uppsala. The model was constructed using three different prognoses for an increase of electric vehicles and hybrids. Through the prognoses the electricity demand has been determined and the number of public charging stations in relation to the electricity demand. It could be concluded that future public charging stations is difficult to predict due to uncertainties concerning the future electric vehicle market. In this study it is concluded that the number of public charging stations would not have a significant impact on the total electricity use in the city of Uppsala.

This thesis focuses on entrepreneurial infrastructure for the development of entrepreneurs in Rwanda. However, the importance of the components of entrepreneurial infrastructure is new concept in developing countries. Indeed many of developed countries have established sustainable components of entrepreneurial infrastructure that support entrepreneurs to carry out their business activities. That is why we carried out our qualitative research in Rwanda to draw and highlight the link of establishing entrepreneurial infrastructure and the growth of businesses. The research highlights a model of entrepreneurial infrastructure and its fourteen components that could support entrepreneurs’ businesses and also help the rise of nascent entrepreneurs. Furthermore, we conducted five interviews of entrepreneurs who managed to run business in Rwanda. Entrepreneurial infrastructure model was used to draw the questionnaire in order to find out how entrepreneurs in Rwanda have experienced the existing components of entrepreneurial infrastructure and how they are contributing to their businesses. The results from qualitative research show how different components of entrepreneurial infrastructure have contributed to the development of the five entrepreneurs we interviewed. Respondents have revealed eight components that have helped them to grow; those components are ‘Financial Assistance, Training, Cultural and Social Norms, Access to Physical Infrastructure, Network/Connection, Entrepreneurial Policy, Education, and Entrepreneurial Environment’.

This dissertation focuses on an in-depth review of literature on concrete crack repairs. Deterioration of concrete affects both the aesthetics and the integrity of structures. As a result, there is need to repair such defects in order to restore the aesthetics and the integrity of concrete structures. This research discusses concrete crack repairs taking into consideration the mechanisms resulting in concrete cracking, techniques to determine concrete cracking, practices for prevention of concrete cracking and concrete crack repair techniques. Causes of cracking include alkali silica reactions (ASR), steel reinforcement corrosion, shrinkage, thermal variations, foundation movements, soil settlement, vegetation effects and cracking related to earthquale effects. Non-destructive and destructive techniques to determine conrete cracking shall be discussed. Destructive techniques usually involve core drilling of samples whilst non-destructive techniques include visual inspections, ultrasonic pulse velocity test, acoustic emission, spectral analysis of surface waves, modal analysis, petrographic analysis and infrared thermography. Several concrete crack repair techniques are to be discussed such as epoxy injection, routing and sealing, near surface reinforcement, additional reinforcement, gravity filling, grouting, dry packing, crack arrest, polymer impregnation, overlay and surface treatments, crack filling, crack sealing, blanketing, stitching and external stressing. These techniques are applied differently depending on the nature and cause of the concrete cracks. Further discussions will be on various case studies around the world on concrete crack repair which demonstrate the application of various concrete crack repair techniques to different types of concrete cracking scenarios. The case studies also highlight recent developments in technology, repair materials, application fields for various techniques and limitations to concrete crack repair. Some of the case studies discussed include concrete crack repair due to ASR damage on transport infrastructure in USA, ASR effects and crack repairs on a two storey building in California (USA), ASR effects and crack repairs to concrete structures in Hokuriku District in Japan, ASR effects and crack repairs to a gravity dam in India, crack repairs at Buttermarket Shopping Center due to shrinkage cracking and concrete crack repairs in Cheshire due to thermal effects.
