Decision Support for Treatment of Patients with Advanced Parkinson’s Disease / Beslutsstöd för behandling av patienter med avancerad Parkinsons sjukdomWestin, Jerker January 2010 (has links)
The overall aim of this thesis was to develop, deploy and evaluate new IT-based methods for supporting treatment and assessment of treatment of advanced Parkinson’s disease. In this condition a number of different motor and non-motor symptoms occur in episodes of varying frequency, duration and severity. In order to determine outcome of treatment changes, repeated assessments are necessary. Hospitalization for observation is expensive and may not be representative for the situation at home. Paper home diaries have questionable reliability and storage and retrieval of results are problematic. Approaches for monitoring using wearable sensors are unable to address important non-motor symptoms. A test battery system consisting of both self-assessments of symptoms and motor function tests was constructed for a touch screen mobile phone. Tests are performed on several occasions per day during test periods of one week. Data is transmitted over the mobile net to a central server where summaries in different symptom dimensions and an overall test score per patient and test period are calculated. There is a web application that graphically presents the results to treating clinical staff. As part of this work, a novel method for assessment of spiral drawing impairment useful during event-driven sampling was developed. To date, the system has been used by over 100 patients in 10 clinics in Sweden and Italy. Evidence is growing that the test battery is useful, reliable and valid for assessment of symptoms during advanced Parkinson’s disease. Infusion of a levodopa/carbidopa gel into the small intestine has been shown to reduce variation in plasma drug levels and improve clinical response in this patient category. A pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model of this intestinal gel infusion was constructed. Possibly this model can assist the process of individualization of dosage for this treatment through in numero simulations. Results from an exploratory data analysis indicate that severity measures during oral levodopa treatment may be factors to consider when deciding candidates for infusion treatment.

Encountering the suffering other in illness narratives : between the memory of suffering and the suffering memoryBurlea, Suzana Raluca 12 1900 (has links)
J’analyse le journal How Linda Died de Frank Davey et les mémoires de John Bayley, Iris: A Memoir of Iris Murdoch et Iris and Her Friends: A Memoir of Memory and Desire. / In this research I examine the intersubjective dimension of suffering which affects the relation of the sufferer to his/her lived body, time and space, as well as to his/her narrative identity and narrative memory. I argue that narrative voice constitutes the intersubjective relation in illness narratives that caregivers write about partners or spouses who suffered from brain cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. My discussion draws on ethics, phenomenology, theories of embodiment, life-narratives studies, medical anthropology and sociology, and narratological theory. The object of my study is the embodied, subjective experience of suffering in illness narratives and the main focus is cast on suffering as loss of memory and loss of the narrative self. I analyse Frank Davey’s diary How Linda Died, and John Bayley’s memoirs Iris: A Memoir of Iris Murdoch, and Iris and Her Friends: A Memoir of Memory and Desire. I explore how illness narratives as embodied stories constitute an ethical relation to the suffering Other who bears a lived impossibility of remembering. I situate the discussion of voice in the context of life-narratives and aim at filling in the theoretical gaps of sociological and anthropological approaches of voice in illness narratives. For this, I examine and question narratological studies of narrative voice and focalization. My own definition of narrative voice is based on Emmanuel Levinas’s and Paul Ricœur’s ethics, Saint Augustine’s interpretation of time, memory, and forgetfulness, and on Levinas’s discussion of time as intersubjective relation. I suggest that “spontanéité bienveillante” (Ricœur, Soi-même comme un autre 222) modulates narrative voice as the attention towards the suffering Other whose voice is silenced. Reformulating the Augustinian definition of time that correlates the temporal modes with the reciting voice, I suggest that through the ethical stance towards the Other, voice is distended between the present voice of voice present, the present voice of voice past and the present voice of voice future. I show how the voice of the caregiver is inscribed by and inscribes itself in the interstices of an interrupted, suffering voice. I define life-narratives as textual interfaces between the self and the Other, between one’s own voice and the sufferer’s voice, as a mode of restoring the Other’s narrative integrity.

Digital comics, like their printed counterparts, are heavily analyzed in a formalist approach: the most famous analysis, Scott McCloud's, could be criticized for it reduction of the media form to a language. But the changes that stem from the digital remediation aren't solely formal: the reader's experience, the author's, and the relation they share are all modified. This new relation changes the work's content: one doesn't tell the same thing in print and online. Autobiography in comics (a trend that exploded in the independent wave of the 90s and was later re-appropriated by bloggers) allows us to compare differences in approach between books and digital formats. The blog offers a tool for free speech and reflection, but at the same time diverts from such goals by the parameters of its execution (immediacy, interactivity, social networking, etc.). Indeed, many blog authors don't produce a singular autobiography as much as reproduce an existing trend (with a consumption-oriented libido) and a now-codified genre, in which autobiographies become uniform. Those blogs can't be completely considered as autobiographical anymore, as they don't tell of a retrospective past; they are more akin to personal diaries whose intimacy would be communicated (or publicized) instead of experienced. In that way, such blogs are closer to reality shows and could therefore be considered as a form of "reality comic".

探討LINE推播新聞之使用行為──以情境理論分析 / Understanding User Behavior in Push Notification News on LINE: A Contextual Theory Approach賴合新, Lai, Ho Hsin Unknown Date (has links)
Mobile devices and services facilitate our lives, and also assist in delivering information more freely and immediately. Since 2012, five companies send four pieces of news daily through “LINE”, which is the most popular mobile instant messaging application in Taiwan. Nowadays, LINE becomes an emerging news channel, with over 450 million subscribers in total.
This study is mainly based on the context theory, by means of diary method and in-depth interviews, to understand users’ behavior of push notifications news in different contexts, from news receiving aspect, reading aspect and human-computer interaction aspect. Besides, analyzing the news headlines by “HTML5 Text Analyzer” to explore the features of different media.
Research found that users’ behavior and attitude influenced not only by contextual factors, but also by the value of content. Moreover, the effect of contextual factors and content would be reinforcing (or restraining) mutually, depends which one influence users’ behavior and attitude more crucially. According to respondents’ feedback, the value of push notification news, such as immediacy and importance, were far from their expectations.
News editors may plan to set up more than one official account to reach target audience; or to increase the diversity of daily news by existing accounts, making effort to meet demand of more audience. In addition, the headline should be more concordant with the content of the news. Keep improving the quality of content, taking account of context factors while pushing news, may improve users’ experience.

Patient involvement and service innovation in healthcareEngström, Jon January 2014 (has links)
This thesis adds to a stream of research suggesting that healthcare can be more patient centered and efficient by redefining the role of the patient from a passive receiver to a more active and collaborative participant. This may relate to healthcare provision (Anderson and Funnell, 2005; Berry and Bendapudi, 2007; Bitner and Brown, 2008; McColl-Kennedy et al., 2012; Nordgren, 2008) and innovation (Bate and Robert, 2006; Groene et al., 2009; Longtin et al., 2010). Through research initiative containing four healthcare units and 68 patients, the present thesis combines healthcare research (e.g., Anderson and Funnell, 2005; Nelson et al., 2002) with service research (e.g., Grönroos, 2006; Vargo and Lusch, 2008, 2004) to explore three aspects of patient involvement and service innovation. Firstly, the concept of patient involvement itself is investigated through an extensive literature review of empirical research on patient involvement. A model describing the antecedents, forms and consequences of patient involvement is proposed. What value is, and how patients can co-create value is discussed from the perspectives of healthcare research and service management thought. Secondly, the thesis proposes a diary-based methodology for involving patients in service innovation. My colleagues and I developed the methodology in collaboration with the participating care providers and applied it in practice. We used the experiences we gained from the project and the contributions from the patients to examine the opportunities for user involvement in service innovation. The participants contributed with ideas and insights stemming from their experiences in their contact with healthcare and other resources. We suggest the following three ways of learning from the collected data: As ideas for improvements; through summary reports to illustrate other quantitative data; and as narratives to promote change. Thirdly, the thesis explores patients’ motivations to participate in service innovation, a hitherto unexplored field. Through an analysis of patients’ contributions and interviews with participants we found that there are a number of factors that motivate patients to participate and that participation is perceived as a social- and meaningladen event. Patients derive psychological well-being and support from participation, but disease was sometimes a barrier to participation. This thesis elaborates on how the most motivated users can be involved in service innovation, applying thinking from the lead-user methodology to a healthcare setting. Overall, the thesis explores patient involvement from new perspectives and, by doing so, adds to our collective efforts to improve healthcare.

Romantic children, brazen girls? An exploration of the girl-child’s representation in and around Nabokov’s Lolita and three derivative novelsVisser, Sandra 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree
Master of Arts at the University of Stellenbosch / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since 1995, three female authors have published novels narrating the events of Vladimir
Nabokov’s novel Lolita from Lolita’s point of view. What is it about the character Lolita
that prompts writers to rework Nabokov’s text? In an attempt to answer this question
this thesis explores reader-responses to Lolita.
The grand narrative of girlhood is illuminated, and it emerges that, influenced by the
discourse of Romanticism, girls’ subjectivity in the Western world is governed by an
‘innocent-or-corrupt’ dichotomy. As a result, Lolita, who seduces her stepfather,
Humbert Humbert, has been vilified by readers through the decades, so that very little
further critical attention has been given to her representation in the text. However, in
recent years rising concern over the representation of girls has seen renewed interest in
Lolita from feminist quarters, with Lolita’s non-representation being critics’ main
concern. These derivative novels work towards compiling a body of feminist criticism
on Lolita. A secondary function of the derivatives is the restructuring of the grand
narrative of girlhood: in other words, the erasure of the ‘innocent-or-corrupt’
dichotomy in favour of a wide range of conceivable subjectivities.
This is necessary because the sexualised images of girls in the media are in danger of
representing girl-children as one-dimensional sexual objects. Both feminist critics and
critical theorists are calling for a new form of resistance to these hegemonic media
forms, so that a collaboration between the two fields seems useful. This thesis argues
that the existence of the derivative novels point to the emergence of a new form of
feminist resistance to the oppressive representations of advancing technological society. Consequently, the thesis performs a reading of Lolita and three derivative novels to
ascertain how the girl-child is represented. Issues of interest include the Romantic
discourse of childhood, the representational practices of advancing technological
society, and girls’ agency. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the effectiveness of
each derivative novel in terms of their contributions to both the Lolita-discourse and the
feminist endeavour to restructure the grand narrative of girlhood.
Gevolglik is
Lolita se uitbeelding as hoofbekommernis.
verdrukkende uitbeeldings, so samewerking tussen die twee is nuttig. Hierdie tesis
meisies as agente in.

BLOG: da Internet à sala de aula / BLOG : from the Internet to the classroomCarmen Pimentel 05 May 2010 (has links)
They show personal narratives with specific characteristics of the genre, with dates, subjective marks, informal writing and colloquialism. For years they were written in notebooks and locked up and hidden by the authors so no one else would read them. Around the 80s, the adolescent planners came out. Using an industrially predefined model, the planners were filled out every day as a diary, but included new semiotic elements, such as photos, candy wraps, magazine clips, among others. They also differed in the presence of a participative reader: the texts were shared with friends, and notes and comments were written in the planner pages. With the arrival of the Internet, the diary and planner merged into the blog, which uses virtual resources to become an interactive, hypertext, and multimedia genre, emphasizing the reading and writing process for young blog producers. At the same time, writing is the major communication tool in the virtual environment, acquiring peculiar characteristics due to a faster communication and less typing. According to Bakthins theory on the discourse genres and Marcuschis digital genre concept, the purpose of this study is to perceive and bring out categories inherent to the diary and blog genres to analyze and compare them with the purpose of mapping a potential route for planners and blogs of teenagers, discussing the public-private contrast in intimate writing as well as their main linguistic features, noticing the advantages and disadvantages of their use as an auxiliary tool in the learning process of writing and reading in the Portuguese language. The study was motivated by the debate that digital writing can harm the development of text production of young adults, which was not observed, since the syntax structure is maintained and the variation occurs in the vocabulary, which doesnt interfere with communication. The results point at the use of blogs in education as a supplement to the learning material and as an incentive to reading, writing, building critical argumentation and standpoint, bringing the students closer to the daily school of life

La correspondance de Juliette Drouet à Victor Hugo sous la Seconde République : édition et étude des années 1848, 1849, 1850 et 1851 / Juliette Drouet’s letters to Victor Hugo under the Second Republic : edition and study about years 1848, 1849, 1850 and 1851Kieffer, Anne 26 September 2014 (has links)
Juliette Drouet was not only Victor Hugo’s mistress for fifty years. She was also an indefatigable and generous letter writer who leaves for posterity about twenty two thousand letters written daily to Victor Hugo. This important amount of letters are today in the heart of a vast project, which aims to edit them entirely. Placing itself in this project, the present thesis proposes the continuous reading of the letters by Juliette Drouet to Victor Hugo under the Second Republic – from January 1st, 1848 until November 30th, 1851 –, transcribed and annotated. Written during a key period of the History of France and Victor Hugo's life, these letters present at the same time an historical and biographical interest. Drafted daily, they are also for the third reader a new record on the supported woman’s conditions, on the theatrical life in Paris, and on the hygiene and the medicine under the Second Republic. Letters offer a particular literary interest by their important generic porosity between letter, diary and conversation. These letters come along with a critical analysis, which allows highlighting the triple biographical, historical and literary interest of this corpus. Completed by all the tools which requires the understanding of these letters, this thesis provides the biographic summary of the persons quoted by Juliette Drouet as well as a glossary of the words and the expressions used by this last one.

The public diary : What means of expression do high school students use in their diary blogs?Karlsson, Jessica January 2008 (has links)
Internet has since the beginning widened the form of communication. In recent times one of the most popular form is via blogs. To express yourself has become more than words. The blogs give you the ability to add pictures, videos, colors and more. You are also able to use typological medium like italic and bold types. All these elements contribute to how the text is read and interpreted. From 14 different diary blogs written by high school students and 289 posts in total my thesis intend to study which method of fabrications these blogs use. The question formulations I have based my thesis on are: · How do high school students use different ways of expressions to esthetical and creatively create posts at the so called diary blogs? - How does headlining, pictures, film, colour and different typological medium being used to create communication and different expression on the posts? · How does the diary blog relate to the traditional diary regarding the formation and forms of communication? Through a structuralistic analysis method based on Jurij Lotman’s analysis I’ve approached the posts on different levels, where I examine details in the text but also the structure. I’ve found that the diary blog and the diary separate from each other on several plans, foremost the way of communication which is overt in a diary blog. Linguistically the diary blog distinguish itself from diaries by the way to be able to emphasize words or a sentence with italic and bold types. Smileys and different kinds of emotional forms of expressions are used by the blogger to avoid misconceptions. The thesis has proven that a widening way of looking at linguistic and communications are necessary due to the new medium that comes with the IT.
