Self-help facilitation for people living with disabilities: a tool for empowerment? A qualitative study in the context of rural ZambiaGroth, Sofia, Söderström, Matilda January 2014 (has links)
This report is the result of a field study conducted in the southern part of Zambia, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how self-help facilitation provided by the organisation Response Network can contribute to the empowerment of people living with disabilities in the context of rural Zambia. We interviewed four people working for the organisation as well as the principal responsible of youth with disabilities in a rural high school. We also conducted two focus group interviews with two disability support groups in a rural village. The results of this study were analysed using empowerment theory and systems theory. Our findings showed that self-determination, education and participation were contributing to the empowerment of people with disabilities. Level of attitudes, understanding and motivation were shown to be important factors which impact the empowerment of people with disabilities.

The politics of cultural policyGroves, Leroy January 2001 (has links)
Over the past twenty years the arts and culture have become a popular vehicle through which local economic development can be pursued. Whilst this relatively new local economic development tool has generated much interest amongst academics, many have been content to simply provide descriptive accounts of its development. Where theoretical frameworks for analysis have been applied, they have failed to adequately examine and assess those local factors which have contributed to the development of these strategies. Interestingly, the evolution of arts policy as a vehicle through which to pursue economic development, has been mirrored by proliferation In coalitions as preferred vehicles through which governing decisions, at the local level are effected. Current debates surrounding the New Urban Politics have focused on the degree to which current modes of governance reflect: widened representation; increased community empowerment; and increased local autonomy. By employing regime theory as a framework for analysis, this thesis will examine how those local political factors in two cities have influenced the development of cultural strategy. Such an exercise will enable a comment to be made on the degree to which cultural strategies reflect more co - operative forms of decision making, increased access to new forms of expertise and community empowerment.

Rhetoric or reality? : an examination of feelings of empowerment amongst UK employees in 2 major business organisationsDenham, Nicola R. January 1997 (has links)
Through the adoption of triangulated methodologies, this thesis seeks to evaluate the success of two large organisations in adopting empowerment initiatives. By focusing on two operating units in each organisation, it considers perceptions of empowerment at the non-managerial employee level and the effects on these perceptions of personality, orientations to work and the contexts of the units and their organisations. Through the use of management interviews, employee focus groups and questionnaires completed by non-managerial employees, the research indicates that aspects of the individual, whilst often contributing to attitudes towards empowerment, do not directly effect whether or not employees feel empowered. Rather, it concludes that job insecurity, management behaviour and the union/management relationship have a larger effect. However, what arises as central to the acceptance of empowerment in modern organisations is the clarity with which the policy is introduced. This thesis finds that organisations introduce ambiguous, mystical messages to their employees which merely cause confusion and unmatched expectations and that rather than increasing staff commitment, organisations are further alienating their employees.

Exploring the relationships among spirit at work, structural and psychological empowerment, resonant leadership, job satisfaction and organizational commitment in the health care workplaceWagner, Joan 11 1900 (has links)
Health care workers are experiencing increasingly stressful work environments related to attempts to control escalating health care costs. Researchers (Kinjerski & Skrypnek, 2004) have developed a tool to identify the unique experience of individuals who are passionate about and energized by their work, also described as spirit at work (SAW). Identification and acknowledgement of these unique experiences by health care professionals and leaders will lead to collaboration in the development and maintenance of healthy workplaces. The objectives in this study were to (a) identify the relationship between the structural empowerment and psychological empowerment of practicing health professionals in both staff and management positions; (b) develop and test a theoretical model of the relationships among resonant leadership, the components of structural empowerment, psychological empowerment, and SAW, and the demographic variables of experience, education, rank, job satisfaction and organizational commitment for nurses (RNs), occupational therapists (OTs) and physical therapists (PTs); (c) identify what the practitioners in each health profession perceived as contributing to their personal SAW in the workplace; and (d) contribute to greater clarity in current and future discussions of SAW. A systematic review of the literature validated the relationship between structural empowerment and psychological empowerment. SAW and specified workplace concepts were identified and further elucidated through a province-wide survey followed by focus group discussions. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis of the survey data demonstrated that the model originally postulated and tested fit the proposed theoretical relationships, after addition of modifications specific to each professional group. This research study makes significant contributions to existing health care workplace research that promises to create a healthier environment for staff and patients alike. Contributions include (a) the introduction of the construct of SAW and an indication of its role in the workplace, (b) an indication of the important role resonant leadership plays within the health care workplace and its multiple effects on other constructs within workplace theory, (c) further development of workplace theory through the use of real measures of concepts to support and strengthen previous research. / Rehabilitation Science

A critical perspective on community empowerment: the cases of selected NGOs in Ethiopia.Sebilu Bodja January 2006 (has links)

Empowerment is a catchword that has recently entered current development debate. Development is largely perceived as a process of building capacities hence empowering people to be able to handle their affairs. As such it is a concept highly espoused by prominent development actors and mainly Non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The study attempted to examine the theoretical and empirical aspects of community empowerment from a critical perspective by surveying activities of three NGOs in Ethiopia. A recent framework developed by a working group of the World Bank for measuring and structuring analysis was used for analyzing findings. Conceptualization and practices of empowerment seem to be at a nascent stage and tools for measuring it as well / that is what the findings of the study indicate. Despite the rhetoric surrounding the concept, the experience of surveyed NGOs also shows disparities between theory and practice.
