"Their Mutuall Embracements": Discourses on Male-Female Connection in Early Modern EnglandWilliams, Lindsay January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Caroline Bicks / Routinely recognized as deeply patriarchal, early modern England is an era in which men and characteristics of the male gender are assumed to have held unrelenting sway over their female counterparts. This description is largely justifiable, particularly given the era's legal codes. However, this thesis seeks to enrich discussions on early modern England by examining its male-female relationships through a markedly different lens. By highlighting the close relationships that existed alongside patriarchal mandates in the era - husband and wife, father and daughter, mother and son - a fuller portrait of the period is sketched. Through an examination of how a variety of genres - medical, religious, and dramatic - grappled with moments of union between the two sexes, particularly physical union and its concurrent or resultant emotional bonds, this thesis offers greater insight into how walls to male-female connection were both raised and bridged in the time period. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College.
The aim of this research is to propose a bilingual vocabulary (Portuguese/English) of Brazilian festivities, which has as its target audience professionals who produce tourist texts in English about Brazil, being them translations or texts written originally in this language. The research has Corpus Linguistics as its methodology and uses a parallel corpus composed of tourist texts about Brazil written originally in Portuguese and their translations into English; and a comparable corpus composed of a subcorpus with tourist texts about Brazil written originally in Portuguese and by a subcorpus with tourist texts written originally in English. With the parallel corpus, we identified the challenges encountered by translators when coming across cultural words related to Brazilian festivities in order to propose a reference work that can meet their needs. The analysis of this corpus draws on the functionalist view of translation and the solutions found by the translators were described according to a list of strategies for the translation of cultural words developed by Marco (2002). As regards the comparable corpus, it helped us with the lexical choices for the definitions of each entry. It also revealed the information each entry should contain. The proposed vocabulary is based on Maria Teresa Cabrés Communicative Theory of Terminology (1999).

The Pyramid Texts borrow from the daily life of Ancient Egyptian a lot of words, making those objects a priori profane to divine attributes or components of funeraryequipment accompanying the deceased during his ascension. The case of textile artifacts(clothes and garments) is particularly affluent.By resuming the identification of each item, on a point of view so iconographical aslexicographical, and to take account of used context, it is able to understand what wasthe motivation of its : institutional lore inherited from first dynasty, theological senses orprivate functional preoccupations.

From its birth, the surrealist group is engaged in a critical practice constantly developed during the interwar years. The thesis is based on a corpus of more than 500 texts published by surrealist poets between 1917 and 1939. With their critical vocation and their diverse forms, these texts can be called by the current editorial qualification of writings on art. This corpus deserved to be combined and analyzed for more than the subversive or imaginative dimension for which they were considered up to now. The thesis identifies and analyzes the stakes that these writings represented in the history of the surrealist movement in particular at the crucial moment of its emergence.

Modernist repositionings of Rousseau's ideal childhood : place and space in English modernist children's literature and its French translationsBarai, Aneesh January 2014 (has links)
It is a little-known fact that several modernists wrote for children: this project will focus on T.S. Eliot‘s Old Possum‟s Book of Practical Cats, James Joyce‘s The Cat and the Devil, Gertrude Stein‘s The World is Round and Virginia Woolf‘s Nurse Lugton‟s Curtain. While not often thought of as a modernist, I contend that Walter de la Mare‘s short stories for children, especially The Lord Fish, take part in this corpus of modernist texts for children. These children‘s stories, while scarcely represented in critical circles, have enjoyed a wide popular audience and have all been translated into French. Modernism is often considered an elitist movement, but these texts can contribute to its reassessment, as they suggest an effort towards inclusivity of audience. The translation of children‘s literature is a relatively new field of study, which builds from descriptive translation studies with what is unique to children‘s literature: its relation to pedagogy and consequent censorship or other tailoring to local knowledge; frequently, the importance of images; the dual audience that many children‘s books have in relating to the adults who will select, buy and potentially perform the texts; and what Puurtinen calls ‗readaloud- ability‘ for many texts. For these texts and their French translations, questions of children‘s relations to place and space are emphasised, and how these are complicated in translation through domestication, foreignisation and other cultural context adaptations. In particular, these modernists actively write against Rousseau‘s notion of the ―innocent‖ boy delighting in the countryside and learning from nature. I examine the international dialogue that takes place in these ideas of childhood moving between France and England, and renegotiated over the span of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This study thus seeks to contribute to British modernist studies, the growing field of the translation of children‘s literature, and children‘s geographies.

In this research, gender terminology is understood as a group of lexical items related to women and to LGBT people, as well as to social and legal contexts that motivate legislative production directed to these subjects of law. We seek to comprehend the genesis of the terminology in a socio-historical context and to observe how this terminology expresses social transformations. The theoretical assumptions of the terminological approaches characterized by cognitive orientation – Frame-based Terminology and Sociocognitive Approach in Terminology – and of the communicative approaches, represented by the Communicative Theory of Terminology, underlie this study, highlighting the importance of cognition and recognizing the role of the discursive context for terminological analysis. In this direction, we resort to the selection of digitalized texts to compose a corpus and of digital tools for research assistance. Given the complexity of the term gênero, the stydy of its development and behavior under sociohistorical and linguistics aspects is fully justified. Methodologically, the corpus is applied in an interdiscursive approach, being divided in a study subcorpus, constituted of 291 legal norms, and a subsidiary subcorpus consisting of 65 reference and science popularization texts as well as scientific texts considered representative and influential within the legislative area. By using AntConc, we were able to collect, observe and analyze data. In the subsidiary corpus, we selected the contexts by entering the search word gênero_é in order to allow the comprehension of the concept gênero as a social analysis category explained by the authors who study this subject. The gender contexts of the study corpus are analyzed in the light of data found in the subsidiary corpus. Supported by the theoretical foundation of Sociocognitive Approach in Terminology, Frame-based Terminology and Communicative Theory of Terminology, the analysis allows to recognize gênero as a complex element construed and transformed in a socio-historical perspective and relates to other lexical units in a thematic conceptual structure. Such units refer to participants and elements that interact – women, men, LGBT; masculinity/femininity, sex, society and (in)equality – and complete the communicative scenario in which five senses of the word gênero are found: a) category of social analysis; b) woman; c) sex in a (in)equality context; d) self-perception and e) biological sex. Gender identity, as perceived in this study, is, in general, intrinsic to all people identified or not by the socio-culturally attributed representation of women and men. However, in the communicative context of the analyzed legislation, gender identity provides reference to individuals who need support, because they are not in accordance with what is socially acceptable. In parallel, gender equality in legislative texts does not refer to relations between the expected behavior for feminine and masculine, but to relations that differ women and men. This study shows that the process of emergence and development of the word gênerois associated with a specific period and are generated by the conscious actions of a social group with the purpose of giving new meaning to a socio-historical situation. This study also demonstrates that the notion of femininity/masculinity unrelated to sex is a characteristic that pervades the term gênero in Grammar, Psychology and Social Sciences.

On the enigma, reading and language road - images and words os stage.Braga, Patricia Colavitti 18 December 2006 (has links)
On the Enigma, Reading and Language Road - Images and Words on Stage is a study that proposes a reflection on the education of reading and text production teachers and reports on a teaching practice that uses art as medium, thus, calling attention to the need of educators to pass through the world of art. We intend to show how this is possible within our pedagogical dimension, and through the use of the intellectual, artistic, pedagogical, and emotional experiences we acquired as teachers. In Jean Lauand\'s words, it is used \"in the way that Spanish very delightfully confuses the word enseñar: enseñar means not only teach, but also show\". Therefore, the objective of the first chapter was to outline, through the poetic forms of life, recreated through art, a reflection on the education of the teacher in today\'s contemporary society. Our aim was to describe how we mediated the educational process in the development of today\'s teachers, capable of seeking deep inside their souls for the awareness of looking beyond the image, and through this contemplation, find possible solutions for their own enigmas. This was justified by the fact that in contemporary society we note the urgency of developing educators who actually perform a social function. These are educators who articulate knowledge, plan pedagogical activities and carry them out in a truly professional manner, conscious of their responsibilities to the learner who was entrusted to them, as well as to other participants in the social fabric and whose objectives are to provide an aesthetic education which will consequently result in the education of better and independent human beings. In the second chapter, we present a study based on the educator\'s concept of reading, on his/her capacity of acting as a medium in the building of knowledge in his/her students, in reference to reading and text production. We begin with the verification that it is not possible to extract reading or text production from empty space. For this reason, we understand that the role of the educator is to awaken the student\'s awareness to the fact that reading and reflecting on texts written by other authors are basic and fundamental principals for the student\'s own text production, because, reading and technical skills are the driving force to comprehension and interpretation, as well as contributors to the creative flow. In the third chapter we report some reading and text production practices that we developed along with our learners, to illustrate that teaching to produce texts, far from common belief, is not simply transmitting knowledge and defining genres, modes and formal discursive structures. Text production is an extremely complex activity, because it requires that the reader, who later will become a text producer him/herself, first be enmeshed in the texture and structure of someone else\'s text, to unveil it, so he/she may later create his/her own text, as well as determine the purpose and fate of these texts. We finally conclude that for a writer\'s epiphany to occur, reading must take a leap into life.

Judah ha-Cohen and the Emporer's philosopher : dynamics of transmission at cultural crossroadsArndt, Sabine January 2016 (has links)
In his Hebrew encyclopaedic compendium Midrash ha-Ḥokhmah, the thirteenth-century Toledan scholar Judah ben Solomon ha-Cohen reports of a correspondence, held in Arabic, that he had with an unnamed philosopher who belonged to the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in Italy. The present work investigates the different ways in which this correspondence helped transmit knowledge between scholars from different cultural and geographical settings. First, a critical edition, translation, and analysis are rendered of the two problems discussed in the text, which concern the construction of the five regular polyhedra and the calculation of oblique ascensions. The correspondence is then placed within the framework of other accounts of scholars who reportedly received imperial inquiries. It is shown that its subject matter was of interest to both the court and the scholarly community, and can be linked to the work of Frederick's correspondents Leonardo Fibonacci in Italy and the school of Ibn Yunus in Mosul, and to the work of later scholars - Campanus of Novara and Muḥyī al-Dīn al-Maghribī. The unnamed philosopher, who is proved wrong in the correspondence, is in all likelihood Theodore of Antioch. An analysis of the terminology used in the Hebrew translation of the lost Arabic original shows that Judah created a unique mathematical and astronomical vocabulary, which changed during his working life. It is influenced by that of Jacob Anatoli, but Judah's terminology is generally much closer to that of his predecessor Ibn Ezra. It is then shown that the interreligious collaboration recorded in the correspondence is typical for the appropriation of Greek learning in the Middle Ages, but its placement within the framework of the Midrash ha-Ḥokhmah is influenced by interreligious polemics. Here, it serves to prove the superiority of the Jewish religion.
