The 1949 campaign for the Democratic Gubernatorial nomination in Virginia

Edwards, Clarence Maurice January 1973 (has links)
The writer's treatment of the 1949 Democratic Gubernatorial Primary offers an examination of Virginia's political climate, the candidates and their campaigns. In addition, the presentation contains an analysis and evaluation of the charges of campaign "misconduct" leveled at the Byrd Organization. Senator Harry F. Byrd's Harrisonburg speech, not Republican votes, won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination for John Stewart Battle. The 1949 Democratic Primary revealed the existence of a new Byrd Organization faction that was disenchanted with the "best government governs least" philosophy. / Master of Arts

Injection molding of shotgun shells

Echenagucia, Jorge Enrique 02 March 2010 (has links)
In this investigation, the possibility of producing injection molded shotgun shells was explored. Also, the molding cycle and the effect of molding conditions on the mechanical properties of molded parts were investigated. The polymer obtained from a commercial brand of shotgun shells was analyzed using infrared spectroscopy and differential thermal analysis. The results from the analyses revealed that polyethylene was the main component used in the manufacture of commercial shotgun shells. An injection mold with automatic ejector mechanism was designed. Before attempting to construct the mold a computer simulation was developed to predict if the "most difficult to fill" cavity, i.e., the shotgun shell cavity, could be completely filled with the injection molding equipment at hand. The simulation predicted the axial distance filled in the shotgun shell cavity within 1%. The injection molder used in this investigation was interfaced with a PDP 8/e minicomputer; as a result the pressure and temperature of the polymer in the mold were monitored and the minimum molding cycle could be determined. Tensile, compressive and bursting strength tests were performed on injection molded specimens of polyethylene and the commercial polymer. From these tests it was established that for a molding cycle in which the plunger is kept forward until the mold is opened and "steady-state" cycle conditions have been established, the tensile modulus and tensile strength at yield increase as injection pressure and/or temperature are decreased; the opposite was true for the same properties measured in compression. Finally, polyethylene was compounded with additives to improve its mechanical properties. / Master of Science

E.M. Delafield and the feminist middlebrow

Izzard, Tanya January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the interaction between the categories of the middlebrow and feminism in the novels of E.M. Delafield (1890-1943). Selecting works for detailed scrutiny from the full range of Delafield's published fiction, I evaluate the expression of feminist meaning in a cultural form that often evinces both formal and social conservatism. I build on Nicola Humble's construction of the feminine middlebrow, a category of interwar twentieth century writing concerned with women's lives, sometimes disruptive in terms of content, but traditional in form. I also develop notions of the middlebrow as hybrid and mutable to support my argument for the establishment of a category of the feminist middlebrow: texts that articulate feminist meaning while retaining palatability, in terms of both form and content, for a large and politically mainstream audience. I argue that Delafield makes use of various constructions of ambiguity within her fiction to assert, and often simultaneously obscure, her feminist meaning. These ambiguous forms include the extensive use of irony, elision of the boundaries between author and protagonist, use of comedy to distract from disruptive meaning, developing marginal characters to carry feminist ideas, and a complex representation of female subjectivity and interiority. Delafield's use of ambiguity allows her to continue to advance feminist arguments, sometimes radical in their implications, without disturbing readerly pleasure in her middlebrow texts; it allows her to speak to a number of potential audiences, those engaged with feminism, those sympathetic to its aims, and those antipathetic, and to create fiction that remains palatable to all those audiences. This privileging of the reader, I argue, creates an intersubjective and democratic approach in which readers articulate feminist meaning in texts, and which plays a crucial part in constructing the category of the feminist middlebrow.

Sledování účinnosti odstraňování pesticidů ze zdrojů pitné vody vybranými adsorbenty / Monitoring the effectiveness of removing pesticides from drinking water sources by selected adsorbents

Gottwald, Martin January 2019 (has links)
In the introductory part of this diploma thesis the pesticidal substances and their legislative requirements in drinking water are described. This is followed by a description of technologies in which pesticides can be removed and used in water treatment plants. In the practical part of the thesis is described description of the experimental procedure of the removal of pesticides on two selected adsorption materials (Filtrasorb F100 and Bayoxide E33) and subsequently this experiment is evaluated.

Mikropolutanty ve zdrojích vod a možnosti jejich odstranění / Micropollutants in water resources and ways of their elimination

Lukášová, Daniela January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with micro-fuels in drinking water sources and their subsequent removal. In the thesis mainly pesticides and pharmaceuticals are described. The reader is first introduced to the most common pesticides occurring in water and their consumption. Drugs are described in a similar context. In addition, there are practical studies on the occurrence, degradation and removal of micro-pollutants from water. The final thesis is a laboratory experiment dealing with the removal of salicylic acid from water by filtration through the filtration material Bayoxide E33 and activated carbon. The thesis describes the procedure and results of the experiment.
