Excellent in-house journals in South Africa : case studies of five leading publications / E. WoodWood, Elvira January 2006 (has links)
Although companies and organisations worldwide publish in-house journals, there is no
comprehensive theory (including technical and normative dimensions) available on this
important public relations instrument. In particular, no research is available on what the
characteristics of excellent South African in-house journals are or ought to be.
In this study a number of dimensions are thus introduced in order to help create a
comprehensive framework for analysing in-house journals, in particular South Africa’s
leading in-house journals.
Firstly, James Grunig’s excellence in public relations theory (published in 1992), which
incorporates the concept of two-way symmetrical communication (which in turn is informed
by a “symmetric” world view), is put forward as basic point of departure.
Secondly, a set of technical criteria for excellent in-house journals gleaned from a wide
range of sources, is compiled.
Furthermore, the internal and external environments in which South African in-house
journals function are identified. The role of other new media (such as e-mail, intranet,
television and radio) is also taken into account.
Five leading South African in-house journals are then analysed and the views of editors
reflected. It was found that Abacus (Absa Bank), Harmonise (Harmony Gold Mining
Company), Hello the future (MTN), Pick ’n Patter (Pick ’n Pay) and Sandaba (Sanlam) all
measured up well against the theoretical statements flowing from the said theoretical points
of departure. However, the analysis did also bring to the fore deviations from the said
statements which give new insight into what is required to publish an excellent in-house
journal.
In conclusion, the criteria are evaluated against some of the more detailed findings of the
analysis and adapted to create a set of theoretically based guidelines that can be used by
South African companies, focusing inter alia on how the unique character and environment
of a company influence its internal communication, to create excellent in-house journals.
In final analysis, it is argued that all factors, starting with the philosophical points of departure
informing communication strategies, management’s attitude toward internal communication,
organisation culture, the socio-political environment in which in-house journals function as
well as the technical aspects of these publications, need to be considered when formulating
criteria for “excellent” in-house journalism.
This study thus endeavours to contribute to the professional integrity of public relations in a
sea of asymmetric, marketing-driven internal communication. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.

Morphable guidelines for the human headGao, Shelley Y. 25 April 2013 (has links)
Morphable guidelines are a 3D structure that helps users achieve better face warping on 2D portrait images. Faces can be difficult to warp accurately because the rotation of the head affects the shape of the facial features. I bypass the problem by utilizing the popular Loomis ‘ball and plane’ head drawing guideline as a proxy structure. The resulting ‘morphable guidelines’ consist of a simple 3D head model that can be reshaped by the user and aligned to their input image. The vertices of the model go on to act as deformation points for a 2D image deformation algorithm. Thus, the user can seamlessly transform the face proportions in the 2D image by transforming the proportions of the morphable guidelines. This system can be used for both retouching and caricature warping purposes, as it is well-suited for both subtle and extreme modifications. This system is advantageous over previous work in face warping because our morphable guidelines can be used on a wide range of head orientations and do not require the generation of a full 3D model. / Graduate / 0984 / syugao@gmail.com

Inger iterativ arbetsstruktur fler fördelar än nackdelar inom level design till Unreal Tournament 3? : Reflektioner kring arbetsprocessen bakom "DM-Theatre"Berg, Kenneth Arcade January 2008 (has links)

Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The debate about the validity of evolution versus creationism started long ago when Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species. Yet today the debate about this issue still engenders a lot of controversy – not only in South Africa, but also, and especially, in the United States. This study investigates articles and letters to the editor in an Afrikaans daily newspaper, Die Burger, over a certain period, and will look at the arguments for and against evolution and creationism. The fact that creationists – despite so much evidence to the contrary – pursue a form of pseudoscience by (sometimes) interpreting the Bible literally, and, amongst other things, deny the real age of the earth.
There has never been an in-depth look at the public debate about evolution versus creationism in a South African newspaper. The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth investigation into this particular debate in the media, with specific reference to correspondence in the letters pages of Die Burger, with regard to the possible influence which the debate about evolution and creationism in an Afrikaans daily newspaper might have on people’s consciousness regarding modern science. It will also explore how some individuals, often conservative believers, still cling to ancient viewpoints and which have repeatedly been disproved by science.

Jindřich Skopec - kněz a historik / Jindřich Skopec - the priest and historianPRAŽÁKOVÁ, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
This submitted diploma thesis deals with the life of Jindřich Skopec (1873-1942), who worked as a priest, an archivist, a teacher of theology at a secondary school and a historian. His interests were multilateral, but he indelibly imprinted his name in the past thanks to his unflagging diligence and his honest work. He built his eternal memorial with his careful word processing of the work called "The memories of František Jan Vavák, neighbour and mayor in Milčice". These "Memories" were published in five books and the publisher was "Dědictví svatojánské". Thus, he became an honorary membership of history research group. Publishing of these "Memories" was Skopec´s life work and unforgettable legacy for the future generation. He also deeply stuck in mind of his contemporaries, because he dedicated his life to education of youth. He taught them to religious belief, moral and deeply humility. The diploma thesis is ever the first that tries to contain the life of this outstanding priest and historian from his early childhood over his clerical activity to his research activity.

Previous issue date: 2010-08-26 / This work investigates the trajectory of the Revista do Patrimônio (heritage magazine), the main publication of the National Service for Historical and Artistical Heritage – Sphan, between the period from 1937 to 1967. That period corresponds to the management of the first Sphan director, Rodrigo de Melo Franco de Andrade. Edited since 1937, the publication gathered a group of intellectuals that have built the field of heritage in Brazil, having as protagonist the Sphan itself. Therefore, the Revista do Patrimônio is taken as object and, simultaneously, as a fundamental source for this research, considering it as social a place for those intellectuals that have collaborated to the preservation of the heritage. In that manner, Rodrigo M. F. de Andrade, that was also the editor of Sphan publications, is taken as the developer of the networks built around the Revista do Patrimônio, which contributed for the constitution of the heritage field, which could promote itself through this publication.

Systém řízení slunečních kolektorů / Systme for solar system controlCseri, Peter January 2011 (has links)
In the first part of my thesis, I was studying materials about using solar energy. Then I write search about all components that are necessary to be used in solar systems. After that I designed the structure of solar system used for heating the hot water for a family house about 4 persons. For this system I designed a regulator and one layer circuit board using Eagle layout editor 4.12r2, which I assembled and tested. This followed creating and debugging program for microprocessor that controls the whole device. This functional regulator for solar collectors connected in a box together with the necessary electronic components is my final product of this project.

Role redaktora v překladech Vladimíra Medka se zaměřením na romány A. Muñoze Moliny Za úplňku a Polský jezdec / The role of a book editor in Vladimír Medek's translations, focused on Muñoz Molina's novels Plenilunio and El jinete polacoKutková, Martina January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the Spanish author Antonio Muñoz Molina and with the Czech translator Vladimír Medek who has translated two novels of the writer: Plenilunio, in Czech as Za úplňku (Garamond, 2008) and El jinete polaco, in Czech as Polský jezdec (Leda, 2018). The thesis also focuses on revisions that a book editor Anežka Charvátová made in the second novel. The thesis is divided in two parts: a theoretical and a practical part. The first one is dedicated briefly to Antonio Muñoz Molina's life and to his work as a writer. The following chapter addresses the translator Vladimír Medek and his translations from Spanish literature. The last chapter of this section describes a book editor's work and his role within a publishing house. The practical part of this thesis deals just with the two novels mentioned above. The two books are characterized first according to Christiane Nord's model of text analysis and then concrete translation processes and solutions used by Vladimír Medek are shown on examples. In case of El jinete polaco a translation handwriting before and after editor's revisions is analysed and changes made in the preparative phase of the translation are traced. That is an aspect of a book editing that an ordinary reader does not come across normally. The translation handwriting was...

Walter Nowojski (1931– 2012): Ein Nachruf auf Victor Klemperers großen EditorHausmann, Frank-Rutger 10 January 2013 (has links)
