Equity Pedagogies, Hidden Curricula: Social-Emotional Wellbeing Among Students Of Color In Elementary School

Haslam, Rebecca 01 January 2019 (has links)
ABSTRACT The shift in the nation’s political climate between 2016-2019 has exacerbated the longstanding pervasive issues of racism and discrimination against People of Color and those marginalized by societal inequity. This has serious implications for teaching and schooling, as it causes children to feel unsafe, question their sense of belonging, and internalize racial oppression. Indicators of inequitable school experiences for Students of Color and students from marginalized identity groups warrant attention to the socially determined facets of public education: specifically a sense of school belonging (SOSB) for Students of Color, the impact of racial trauma, the patterns of social engagement that shape their experiences, as well as the pedagogical practices teachers employ to support their social-emotional wellbeing. This qualitative case study seeks to illustrate how classroom teachers at Arday Elementary School support the social-emotional wellbeing of Students of Color by examining their understanding of racial trauma and SOSB and their use of equity literate pedagogies in the classroom to effectively support their Students of Color in a public elementary school in Northern New England. Findings include the hidden curriculum, teacher critical consciousness, cultural congruence, learning environment, racial trauma, and resistance. These findings point to a newly conceptualized framework, Equity Pedagogy for Social-Emotional Wellbeing (EPSEW), which applies a social determinants perspective to examinations of educational inequity and considers the social and community contexts that predetermine and influence inequitable outcomes. Keywords: equity pedagogy, equity literacy, social determinants, school belonging, racial trauma, internalized racism, social emotional well-being, critical pedagogy, anti-bias education

The relationship between leisure-time physical activity and psychological well-being in executive employees of selected African countries / Thendo Maureen Thangavhuelelo

Thangavhuelelo, Thendo Maureen January 2013 (has links)
Participation in leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) is vital to ensure adequate physical work capacity for the demands of daily living and job performance. Due to work demand, most top and middle (executive) managerial employees become physically inactive and experience psychological and other health problems which may lead to hypokinetic diseases and even premature death. The purpose of this study was twofold: to determine leisure-time physical activity and psychological well-being status of executive employees; and to determine the relationship between leisure-time physical activity and psychological well-being status of executive employees in selected African countries. A cross-sectional study design was carried out on a group of 156 (mean age 41.22±10.17) available executive employees from selected African countries. Participants were grouped according to age (≤35 years; 36–46 years and ≥ 46 years). Standardised questionnaires were used to collect the data. Subsequently, total scores were calculated for all variables. Out of 156 participants in the study, 42.9% occupied top level management and 57.1% middle level management positions. When data was analysed according to age groups, 31.4% and 68.6% in the less than 35 years age group were in the top and the middle level management positions respectively. In the age group 36 to 46 years, 47.2% occupied the top level management position and 52.8% occupied the middle level management position. With regard to LTPA, top level managers (71.6%) scored low LTPA compared to the middle level managers (62.9%). In addition, both the top and middle level managers reported bad emotional index (49.3%; 56.2%) and happiness index (41.8%; 37.1%) respectively. Though not significant, LTPA was positively associated with psychological well-being parameters amongst top level managers. The study concluded that both top and middle level managers exhibited low LTPA, and with no participation in high physical activity among top level managers. In addition, more middle level managers reported bad emotional stage than the top level managers, while the top level managers were less happy than the middle level managers. The study therefore recommends urgent strategic intervention programmes for leisure-time physical activity and psychological well-being. / MSc (Biokinetics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Du Plooy, Jacolene Mathilda 30 November 2007 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The focus of this qualitative study was the perceptions of parents regarding their toddlers' regressive behaviour. For the purposes of this study the term perceptions relates to both the impressions in a persons' consciousness as well as the result thereof. The researcher compiled a conceptual framework from the existing literature and then carried out the empirical study. A focus group of four parents' whose toddler or toddlers showed regressive behavior at the time of the study was compiled. A focusgroup discussion was held where the parents described their perceptions of their toddlers' regressive behaviour. The focus group discussion was recorded both by video camera as well as a digital recorder with the consent of all focus group participants, after which it was transcribed. Recurring themes were identified from the transcribed data and verified with literature. Qualitative data were obtained that answered the research question. / Social work / M.Diac.

The effect of a dance and movement intervention program on the perceived emotional well-being and self-esteem of a clinical sample of adolescents

Van der Merwe, Sarita 12 August 2011 (has links)
The researcher aimed to determine the effect of a dance and movement intervention on the perceived emotional well-being and self-esteem of a group of in-patient adolescents in Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital. A quantitative study, using a quasi-experimental design, was carried out using the positive and negative affect scale for children (PANAS-C) and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale to measure the two independent variables, namely perceived emotional well-being and self-esteem. There were four participants in the experimental group and six in the control group. A between-group comparison was made between the pre-test and post-test scores of the two groups. Both groups completed the positive and negative affect scale for children (PANAS-C) and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale at which point the experimental group took part in a two week, twelve session, dance and movement intervention program. After two weeks both groups once again completed these two measures. Although the results were statistically non-significant, effect size and outcome patterns pointed to an improvement in these two variables due to the intervention program. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted

The Relationship Between Hope, Core Self-Evaluations, Emotional Well-Being, Sexual Risk Taking, Substance Use, and Academic Performance in Freshman University Students

Griggs, Stephanie 14 April 2017 (has links)
Objective: To examine the relationship between hope, core self-evaluations, physical function, emotional well-being, health risk behaviors, and academic performance in freshman enrolled in their first year of college. Participants: Freshman (N = 495) attending a large public university in the Northeast completed an online survey between February 1 to February 13, 2017. Methods: Cross sectional descriptive survey. Linear regression, path analysis, and structural equation modeling procedures were performed. Results: Core self-evaluations mediated the relationship between hope and emotional well-being and academic performance. Contrary to the hypotheses, higher hope predicted more sexual risk taking behaviors and alcohol use. Conclusions: Core self-evaluations is an important component of hope theory. Hope Theory is useful for predicting emotional well-being, and academic performance, but not as useful for predicting drug use, alcohol use, and sexual risk taking. Hope and core self evaluations interventions are needed to improve academic performance and emotional well-being in university freshman.

The main purpose of this study is to construct the structural equation modeling (SEM) of stress, explanatory style, and emotional well-being. By this way, the researcher can explore the relationship among the three variables, and know the mediator variable of explanatory style. The participants were two groups of students at National Chengchi University, and each group included 644 college students. The data was collected by questionnaires, including the stress scale, the explanatory style scale, and the emotional well-being scale. Moreover, the data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, factor analysis, and SEM. The study, firstly, used the first group to explore the differences of gender and grade, and constructed the final structural model after setting and modifying model. Finally, the researcher used the second group to verify the stability of the model. The main results were summarized as follows: About the background variables: 1.Students with different gender and grade were significantly different in the scores of stress and explanatory style. 2.Students with different gender and grade were not significantly different in the scores of emotional well-being. About the structural model: 1.Academic stress and relationship stress had positive influence on explanatory style directly. 2.Academic stress and relationship stress had negative influence on emotional well-being directly. 3.Explanatory style had negative influence on emotional well-being directly. 4.Relationship stress had influence on emotional well-being directly, and it also affected emotional well-being through explanatory style. 5.Explanatory style was a mediator variable between academic stress and emotional well-being. 6.Through the cross-validation, the final structural model was of model stability. Finally, based on the findings of the study, the researcher made some practical strategies for counselor and some suggestions for further studies.

Flores Zuniga, Elida Paola, Nishimura Higa, Danica, Pascual Erazo, Johana Janet, Rojas Benites, Stefany Rosemary, Sánchez Ramirez, Valeria Fernanda 01 December 2021 (has links)
Nowadays, most people communicate using smartphones, make new connections through social networks, and even work and study using technology. All of this is possible thanks to apps and widgets inside smartphones. Most of the time, those apps and widgets make life easier and improve the connection between people. Although, in recent years and during the pandemic, there has been an increase in some mental health issues such as stress and anxiety. Young people have been more affected by those, most of them don't know how to ask for help when they feel out of control of their feelings, even though most of them have a constant sensation of loneliness. Therefore, in the present work, we seek to evaluate the viability of launching an emotional well-being application called "Alli: Your emotional ally", which contains tools, activities and psychological sessions that will help to overcome and reduce stress problems caused by the pandemic and the multiple daily activities of the people who will use it, that is, the target audience. To achieve the objective of the work, it has gone through a process of ideation of the business model, knowledge of the target audience and validation of the problem that this application seeks to solve, through interviews with users and experts. In addition, the Business Model Canvas of the project was carried out, giving a clearer idea of the client's profile, value proposition, cost structure, etc. Afterwards, an application prototype was created and the concierges were carried out to validate the sale of the product to the target audience. Finally, the financial plan was elaborate, it began with the sales projection, choice of the type of financing and concluded with the verification of the profitability of the project. / Trabajo de investigación

Relación del bienestar emocional y la disposición espacial en una institución educativa / Relationship of emotional well-being and spatial arrangement in a state educational institution

Huaroto De La Cruz, Emily Alexandra 10 May 2021 (has links)
In recent years, the subject of mental health has taken on greater importance because it is considered a means that allows people to develop efficiently in different areas of their lives. However, it is affected by different agents, such as society, school and / or family, most often in adolescence. That is why the few spaces that they frequent allow them to develop and enhance their 3 dimensions: socio-affective, cognitive and physical-creative. Such is the case of learning spaces, in which children and adolescents stay for long hours. Given this, it is important that this physical space is adequately conditioned according to certain design guidelines such as the relationship with the environment, architectural volumes, lighting and color within the space, which allow generating experiences and sensations in users. Despite the improvements of these institutions, they have not yet achieved a balance between the composition of functional and aesthetic spaces that allow individual development and social development through different activities; but on the contrary, they have continued to develop based on their traditionalist principles. In this sense, the research work seeks to describe the disposition of the spatial conditions of a learning environment and its relationship with the emotional well-being of adolescents. The result of this research shows us that there is a strong relationship between both factors. / Trabajo de investigación
