Organisations in the chemical industry face many demands. They have to distinguish themselves from their competitors in the market through technological advancement, market changes and the constant drive to be the best. Other demands include political pressures, e.g. employment equity and diversity management. Furthermore they have to attempt to reduce costs as well as to increase productivity. These pressures may have either a negative or positive effect on employees which could in turn impact on their energy and motivation. Higher job demands and a lack of job resources could result in high levels of exhaustion, demotivation, dissatisfaction and disengagement. Job demands refer to those physical, psychological or organisational aspects of the job that require specific effort and are associated with physiological and psychological costs. Job resources refer to the aspects of the job that may be functional in meeting task requirements and may reduce the physiological and psychological costs; they may also stimulate growth as well as the development of an individual.
The objective of this study was to test a structural model of work-related well-being showing the relationships amongst the variables of job demands, job resources, exhaustion, mental distance, vitality, work devotion, health and organisational commitment. A cross-sectional survey design was used. The participants (JV=265) included employees working for a business within the chemical industry. The South-African Employee Health and Wellness Survey (SAEHWS) was used to gather data on the work-related well-being of employees. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha coefficients, correlation coefficients and structural equation modelling were used to analyse the data.
The results indicated that high job demands and insufficient job resources resulted in high levels of burnout (exhaustion and mental distance), which led to physical and psychological ill health. Adequate job resources on the other hand resulted in work-related well-being (low burnout and high work engagement), which in turn resulted in organisational commitment.
Growth opportunities within the job and organisational support played an important role in the well-being of the employees.

A comparative study to determine the impact of fringe benefits on job satisfaction and engagement / A. SteynSteyn, Allen January 2010 (has links)
The study addresses the impact that fringe benefits have on the levels of job
satisfaction and engagement of the employees of Orica Mining Services. Orica is a
global explosives company that serves the mining and construction industries all
over the world. The remuneration of employees differs from country to country within
the organization and this can lead to confrontations when employees compare
remuneration packages amongst one another. To determine the appropriate
compensation for the value of the work becomes even more difficult when dealing
with a global organization. This matter becomes even more complicated when an
organisation's boundaries stretch across country borders. The study aims to
compare job satisfaction and engagement of Orica employees working in South
Africa to those working in Ghana.
A survey research design was used with a specifically developed questionnaire as
the data gathering instrument. The participants represent the total of all employees
of Orica, a global mining services company. Management supported the study and
made participation compulsory. A total of 57 employees completed the
questionnaires. Employees from different areas, gender, age, academic levels and
income groups participated. The majority of the respondents were in the age group
36 - 40 (28.1%). Educational levels revealed that the majority (68.4%) of participants
have a Grade 12 and/or higher qualification.
Because all the questionnaires represented the population and not just a sample,
only a test to determine practical correlation was performed. For the purpose of the
correlation test, the Nonparametric Spearman's correlation coefficient (r) was used. The statistical analysis indicated a highly important correlation between Job
Satisfaction and Engagement. Thus a high level of job satisfaction will imply a high
level of engagement and vice versa. It has also indicated that Job Satisfaction and
Fringe Benefits shows a low practically significant correlation. The test for correlation
between Job Satisfaction and Remuneration indicated that the level of job
satisfaction an employee experiences in the organisation is influenced by his
remuneration package. The test for correlation between Engagement and Fringe
Benefits shows a low practically significant correlation. The test for correlation
between Engagement and Remuneration shows a low practically significant
correlation.
The limitations of the study were the limited number of employees in Orica South
Africa and Orica Ghana for participation in this comparative study. The structure of
remuneration packages is treated as confidential and therefore employees might be
hesitant to answer questions regarding fringe benefits and remuneration. The study
was conducted within Orica and therefore its outcome can only be released with the

Cultivating Youth Earth Connections Summer Internship Program (YEC): A Hands-on Environmental Justice Focused Farming Program at the High School LevelLewis, Samuel 01 January 2011 (has links)
YEC’s main goal was to open dialogue with high school students from under resourced communities about environmental injustices and to create and explore positive alternatives. The summer program, which was funded by the 2010 Davis Projects for Peace and the Pomona College Summer Undergraduate Research Project Award, included a group of 11 high school students from Pomona, Montclair, La Puente, and Chino Hills, CA. The students were paid to participate in the program for 6 weeks in the summer of 2010, five days a week, for 30 hours each week. The program was designed to consistently connect movements for food and environmental justice with the farming work that we did. Priscilla Bassett and I led this program in partnership. Priscilla is a student at Scripps College, where she pursues a major in Environmental Analysis with a focus on race, class, and gender. This paper includes many sections. First, it briefly outlines and defines environmental injustice, food injustice, the industrial food system, the Inland Empire, and systems of domination and oppression as issues which motivated the creation of YEC. I then discuss my positionality as a white, class privileged, educated, man working with Priscilla, a black woman, and predominantly first generation low-income high school students of color. After this, I discuss how and why the work of bell hooks, Pablo Freire, and the Food Project was influential as Priscilla and I formed a teaching style. Then, I briefly I talk about the grant writing process for YEC and I outline the process by which Priscilla and I recruited and selected the interns we worked with. I summarize the program’s activities day by and then include responses to surveys which the YEC interns completed on a weekly basis. I use the results of these surveys to suggest that experiential urban farming programs at the high school level can connect high school students with issues of environmentalism and social justice and can motivate them to take action against the industrial food system and the environmental injustices they see and experience around them.

Despite a great deal of research on the international student experience, there is limited research examining internationalized classroom perspectives of domestic students. Existing studies have documented academic and personal issues that arise within the internationalized classroom such as: self-segregation, reluctance to work together, reduced interactions between domestic and international students, and limited academic engagement. This study explores experiences, perceptions and attitudes of students who are currently engaged in graduate programmes in internationalized classrooms. As shown in the data, the individual perspectives on culture, language, goals and expectations, gender and age, which are influenced by internationalization and instruction methods, help us to better understand the challenges associated with university internationalization in Canada. Australian Nonresident Fathers: Attributes influencing their engagement wtih childrenHawthorne, Bruce January 2005 (has links)
Studies of nonresident fathers have largely neglected the influence of their personality on their contact and involvement with children. The present two-stage study, using quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, undertook to investigate the extent to which selected personality characteristics influenced nonresident fathers� continued engagement with children. The study initially collected demographic and personal data from two hundred and sixty nonresident fathers throughout Australia. This first stage of data collection focussed on fathers� experience of the separation and their subsequent frequency and level of contact and their level of involvement with children. It included several multi-item variables, which measured nonresident fathers� relationships with former partners and children, their adjustment to their new parental role, their role satisfaction and role strain. It also included measures of fatherhood salience, nonresident fathers� parental authority within the separated family, their satisfaction with that authority, their attitude to child support and their perception of resident mothers� attitude to contact. It also administered abridged Sensitivity and Impulsivity scales devised by Eysenck (1969). At the second stage of the study, one hundred and thirty-five of these fathers participated in an interview. One hundred and twenty of them completed a personality questionnaire, which measured scores on the four folk scales of Responsibility, Socialization, Self-control and Good Impression, taken from the California Psychological Inventory. The study found Socialization was the only selected personality characteristic to be significantly associated with nonresident fathers� engagement with children. All four folk scales were positively correlated with nonresident fathers� role adjustment, which was significantly associated with nonresident fathers� contact and was part of the model best predicting their involvement with children. Results showed that nonresident fathers� scores on the Sensitivity measure were negatively associated with role adjustment. Most nonresident fathers in the study had frequent contact with children but limited involvement with them. They reported having little scope to share in parental decision making or to be involved in children�s schooling. The study found fatherhood salience, role adjustment, parental authority and attitude to child support to be positively associated with engagement. It showed interparental hostility, interparental conflict and nonresident fathers� role strain to be negatively correlated with engagement. The study also found that dissatisfaction with parental authority within the separated family, role strain and a negative attitude to child support were associated with ongoing interparental hostility. Qualitative data confirmed nonresident fathers� common experience of being marginalised within the family. They also revealed that many participants went to great lengths to maintain some parental relevancy for their children, despite social and legal systems tending to impede them from meeting parental responsibilities and caring for their children.
