EN JÄMFÖRELSESTUDIE MELLAN MANUELL UPPMÄTNING OCH LASERSKANNING VID OMBYGGNATION / A COMPARISON STUDY BETWEEN TRADITIONAL BUILDING SURVEY AND LASER SCANNING IN RENOVATIONAl-yousifi, Yani, Deniz, Mustafa January 2020 (has links)
Purpose: In a survey from the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, important causes for deficiencies, faults and damage in renovation projects has been identified. Lack of time proved to be the most cause, which also entails large costs of action to remedy the faults/damages. Digital tools provide opportunities for streamlining time and costs. Laser scanning is one such tool. However, the knowledge of laser scanning is not extensive in the construction industry and/or is assumed to cost a lot. The aim of the work was to compare laser scanning against traditional building surveying method to know which method is more advantageous regarding profitability. Method: To achieve the objectives of the work, a survey strategy was used that was both qualitative and quantitative. Literature study and interviews gathered knowledge about the advantages/disadvantages of the two building surveying methods (laser scanning and traditional) and factors that affect the profitability when using them. Calculations were performed to compare the costs of the methods regarding the complexity of the project. Findings: The generated result shows that laser scanning has more advantages than traditional building surveying. Laser scanning takes less time to perform in bigger projects and results in greater accuracy in the as-built documents than traditional building surveying, among other things. From a cost-benefit perspective it is important that for each specific project calculations should be made separately for the two building surveying methods to see which one is less expensive. The project used in this thesis would have been more profitable with laser scanning as a surveying method, while for other projects it might be more profitable with traditional building surveying. Implications: The study indicates that laser scanning is more profitable in terms of time and cost savings. Laser scanning should be chosen as a surveying method if you want to save time and get better accuracy, which results in less errors in the project planning. For larger projects, laser scanning is also recommended from a cost perspective. The survey also gives clients and contractors a better view of the benefits from using laser scanning. Limitations: The study was limited to treating only terrestrial laser scanning when surveying existing buildings prior to renovations, hence the result cannot be generalized to other types of laser scanning. Keywords: Laser scanning, Traditional building surveying, BIM, Profitability, Renovation, Complexity, LOD.

The Swedish government set a climate goal until the year 2045, to not produce any greenhouse gases until 2045. This study is based on the problems surrounding the climate impact from the construction and real estate sector in Sweden. The construction company Skanska has made a major contribution with the recently new project Juvelen, which today is Sweden's most sustainable building. The demand for constructing buildings with lesser environmental impacts is increasing and constructions as Juvelen may be an important factor to achieve climate goals. Purpose: This study was done to determine the carbon dioxide emissions during the construction phase of Juvelen, which includes the production phase and transports to the construction site, as well as the operational phase. Method: This study is based on a literature study, case study, and a reference object. During the case study, interviews were conducted with various people who have participated in the production of Juvelen. The carbon dioxide calculations consisted of EPD reports obtained from Strängbetong and VSAB. The carbon dioxide calculations for the operational phase were performed through different scenarios with three different scenarios types of energy. Results: The result for Juvelen's carbon dioxide emissions during the construction phase, based on the quantitative data that had obtained from Strängbetong and VSAB, was approximately 3,568 tonnes of CO2e. Renewable High had an emission of 96,472.61 kg CO2e during the 50-year analysis period. Renewable Medium received a sum of 2,519,339.7 kg CO2e and Renewable Low 11,961,913.29 kg CO2e. The 100-year analysis period for the operational phase showed the double value of the 50-year analysis period. Based on the current study and an interview with Ambjörn Gille, it appears that Skanska is making efforts to achieve climate goals by 2045. Conclusions: The conclusion that the work came to was that to achieve the climate goal of net-zero emissions, its necessary that the entire construction and real estate sector needs to adapt, apply new and innovative technology. The differences that emerged from the comparison of the production, operating phase for Juvelen were the choice of material, construction process, and method for construction of Juvelen and the choice of energy scenario.

Today there is a huge focus on reuse and recycling and how the society can replace virgin material with sustainable resources. Since the society today has a strong focus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the production of cement is an important factor to prioritise as it generates large carbon dioxide emissions. One way of contributing positively to climate change and to increased circularity in the construction industry would therefore be for contractors and material manufactures to work with reuse and recycling of concrete frames. However, research in this area has not come far and reuse of concrete frames is not common in the construction industry. To succeed with reuse and recycling of concrete frames, there is a need to develop today’s construction technology, which requires contractors to come up with new or develop existing working methods. The aim of the study is to contribute to an increased understanding of how contractors and material manufacturers can work to promote reuse and recycling of concrete frames in the construction industry. The objective is therefore to identify the above-mentioned actors’ views on the challenges that exist today and how these actors can work in the future to better enable the reuse and recycling of concrete frames. The study includes a literature study and an interview study. The interview study considers the perspectives of two actors- contractors and material manufactures- and comprises 13 interviews in total. The interview study aimed to examine how the two actors relate to the reuse and recycling of concrete frames today and what they see as challenges and opportunities with it. The results were analysed by categorising the interview results into themes to further identify similarities and differences in the respondents' answers. The literature study was done in part to gain an understanding of the subject and to compare interview data with challenges and opportunities identified through the literature. The study has been carried out with a focus on the construction and project development company Skanska Sverige AB, which means that the interviews is based on Skanska employees' knowledge and experience. One of the most important challenges that emerged from the interview study is the lack of experience and knowledge linked to reuse and recycling and the lack of completed projects. The literature study showed that established methods such as construction technology and calculation tools must be developed to better align with reuse and recycling. Both the interview study and the literature study showed that reuse and recycling of concrete will need to increase due to the large carbon dioxide emissions of concrete production. To promote this change, the interviews showed that Swedish legislation needs to be reviewed, while at the same time, for example, concrete standards need to be changed. Most respondents said that current laws and standards inhibit innovation. In addition to knowledge dissemination and motivation for increased reuse and recycling, the interview and literature study points out that it is important to find a functioning quality assurance system to ensure that the concrete meets the set requirements, such as the right structural strength. The interviews showed that success in reuse and recycling can be made possible by using expertise and collaborating internally and externally between companies. It emerged from the interview study that the focus should be on developing existing concrete frames due to the benefits of concrete as a durable material with a long service life. Furthermore, results from interview and literature studies showed that the opportunities increase if time and resources can be invested in the design phase and if design for deconstruction can be promoted. Respondents thinks that the industry should find a common standard for concrete elements that simplifies assembly and disassembly. Finally, the interview and literature study showed that one possibility is to focus on material inventory of building components before demolition of the concrete structure, which also contributes to reduced waste. The research area in this study is under development and additional research is needed. For example, further studies could investigate how concrete frames can be adapted to enable reuse or how industry standards that promote reuse and recycling can be designed.

Påverkan av ny miljölagstiftning : En fallstudie om byggserviceverksamheters effektivitet i produktion samt ekonomi / Impact of new environmental legislation : A case study of construction services efficiency in production and economyMarkovic, Andrea, Hjelm, Andreas January 2021 (has links)
Purpose:Every year, the construction industry generates the largest amount of hazardous wastethat occurs in Sweden. Hazardous waste is waste that can be hazardous to theenvironment and human health. According to statistics from the report Avfall i Sverige2018 – uppkomst och behandling compiled by MiljöEmissonData (Naturvårdsverket,2020b), the arisen amount of hazardous waste has remained stable for a long period. Tocounteract this, a new environmental law came into force the 1st of November, whichmade it mandatory to report all hazardous waste management. The aim of the study isto survey how construction services are affected by the new law change. The study hasbeen carried out in collaboration with Peab Byggservice AB and therefore it onlyreflects their impact of the new legislation. Can they maintain their efficiency inproduction and their economy after the amendment? Method:The study is a qualitative case study. The case is about how different constructionprojects are affected in the management of hazardous waste. The chosen methods torespond the target are observations, interviews and document collection. Interviewswere conducted with staff in different positions at Peab Byggservice AB. Observationswere carried out at Peab Byggservice AB's workplaces in connection with theinterviews. Documents were collected from four different projects. Findings:Based on the case study carried out in the survey, the results show that PeabByggservice AB's economy between customers and recycling companies has beenaffected by the new environmental legislation. Based on the case study, the results alsoshow that the efficiency of production at Peab Byggservice AB has been affected in thewake of the new environmental legislation. The results show that the impact of thebusiness is most likely to arise from the company's smaller projects. Implications:The study shows that many factors play a part in the reporting and management ofwaste. In small projects, a large part of the waste is handled with its own staff and therecycling companies are used for handling and reporting the hazardous waste. For largerprojects, waste is sorted into containers by its own staff and recycling companies handlethe vessels and report hazardous waste. In order to promote efficiency and the economyof all projects, the contractor should plan and work closely with the recyclingcompanies. Furthermore, the efficiency and economy of construction services canbenfit from a smarter solution that include tranport and sort small amounts of waste. Limitations:The study is limited to one construction service business, and it surveys how they areaffected by changes in the environmental legislation. The fact that the study is solelybased on one business makes the results only partly generalisable.

Climate impact of frame materials at Regnbågens Preschool in Årjäng : Focusing on carbon dioxide emissions depending on selection of CLT frame or a steel frame with timberstructure compartment walls and concrete floors.Klemetz, Jacob, Eklund, Joseph January 2020 (has links)
Today, the Earth's resources are used at a higher rate than the Earth can manage. The construction industry is one of the sectors that have the greatest negative climate impact, mainly related to high carbon dioxide emissions. This industry continuously strives to develop building- and construction materials resulting in an as low environmental footprint as possible. Recent trends, in the construction industry, shows an increase in the use of cross-limbed timber (CLT) for frame material. The claim is lower environmental footprint at the same time as it gives a better indoor climate compared to other frame materials. This study will be a theoretical comparison of the climate impact as well as the indoor environment between a CLT frame and a combined steel and concrete frame. Both frame alternatives have been designed by the construction company ByggDialog together with their partners. The reference building for this study is Regnbågens Preschool in Årjäng Municipality. The purpose of this study is to raise and create awareness and also provide tools for ByggDialog and their customers enabling a climate-smart frame selection. This will most likely also contribute to achieving the Swedish sustainability goals by 2030. By using data from the Global Warming Potential (GWP) for the input materials, the climate impact was calculated. Each construction frame type data was analyzed during the product phase which include raw material supply, transport and manufacturing (module A1-A3) in the form of emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents. A literature study was also conducted to analyze how a frame of CLT affects indoor environment. The result showed that by using a CLT frame material versus a combined steel and concrete-frame the environmental reduction was about 50% and about 12% increase in cost. When calculating the carbon dioxide emissions per SEK, it was found that the CLT frame construction had about 67% lower carbon dioxide emissions per SEK compared to a combined steel and concrete frame. The literature study showed that a frame material of CLT provides a more evenly distributed humidity, poorer heat storage capacity and less sound absorption capacity in the form of step- and frame sound compared to a combined steel and concrete frame construction. Further research in this field indicates that by having visible wood, for example a CLT frame provides an experience of safety, relaxation and general well-being for people in the building.

Life cycle assessment comparison of CIPP lining and traditional pipe replacement / En jämförande livscykelanalys av CIPP-lining och traditionellt stambyteBerglund, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
During the so-called “Miljonprogrammet”, over a million homes were built in Stockholm. As the buildings mature, parts of the buildings reach their technical life times and it is time to renovate them. At a time when the environmental impact of humans is a hot topic, it is appropriate to take the environment into account when deciding upon which restoration method to use. The sewage pipes are one of the important building parts in need of repair. This can be achieved by for example traditional pipe replacement or Cure-In-Place-Pipes (CIPP-lining).The goal of this study is to investigate and compare the environmental impact of traditional pipe replacement versus the use of the relining method CIPP lining by conducting a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA). The methods differ in the way that traditional pipe replacement demolishes the outer layers of the bathrooms and remove the old pipes to replace with new and restore the surface layers while CIPP-lining renovates the pipes from the inside with the use of a flexible liner. The purpose of the study has been to clarify the differences in environmental impacts of the different methods in a clear and easily understood way and thereby also simplify the decision-making process of property owners in need of renovation. With aid of the guidelines in ISO standards 14040 and 14044 a correct methodology has been used to ensure that the level of this work will be as high as possible. In combination with the software SimaPro specifically developed to handle the creation of various forms of life cycle assessments and the ISO standards a complex system been analyzed in detail. The results of the study show that CIPP-lining generally cause less environmental impacts than the traditional pipe replacement method. The analysis of 14 selected impact categories show that CIPP lining is preferable in 13 categories and that the traditional pipe replacement is preferable in 1 category. The sensitivity analysis show that the results change drastically depending on how much of the materials and energy used to demolish and reconstruct the outer layers of the bathroom one chooses to allocate to the new sewer pipes. The results show that the CIPP-lining results are dependent on the consumables and the liner assembly processes while the energy usage of the production process does not have a large impact on the results. For the traditional pipe replacement the results show that the consumable process is clearly the biggest impact while the piping production inflicts the least impact on the result.

Comparative assessment of two structural materials from a life-cycle point of view : Using dynamic and LCA calculation units from LESOSAIMatricon, Geoffrey January 2015 (has links)
Life-cycle assessment is being applied to an increasing number of building projects from one side while the usual dynamic thermal simulations are being conducted from the other side on the same projects. However, there are few observations in the literature linking these two types of calculations: embodied and operating energies are rarely directly compared. This paper compares those energies for some case studies. The challenge is to quantify to what extent chosen structural materials can change their global life-cycle energy balance. This question is raised by the different dynamic thermal behavior of materials. Consequently, the case studies focus on the influence of materials’ thermal mass on the operating energy consumptions.Nonetheless, few software programs can conduct both these calculations (LCA and dynamic thermal modeling). The Swiss regulatory tool LESOSAI has been implemented and offers now these two possibilities. However, its LCA database is arcane, this paper will first assess the LCA results of LESOSAI by comparing it with the French tool ELODIE developed by the CSTB. Measuring the reproducibility of their results provides boundaries to the LCA calculations that LESOSAI can perform. These identified limits enable to set the starting assumptions of the case studies. Two raw materials are compared: wood and concrete structures. Considering thermal mass as a dynamic property, different typologies of building usages and climates have been investigated for the materials comparisons. Finally, the conclusion emphasizes the material that permits the lowest life-cycle impact for each typology and climate.

Decision making when investing in sustainable technology within the building sectorNilsson, Henrik, Nordlund, Henrik January 2012 (has links)
The housing and service sector in Sweden are estimated to be responsible for 40 % of the total primary energy usage (Energimyndigheten, 2011). There exist a lot of inventions that have the possibility to greatly improve the environmental performance of a building´s LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) (Swentec, 2012) (Rutqvist, 2008). In order to achieve implementation of new innovative sustainable installations in buildings it is important to understand the process during the investment decision. Understanding the decision making process used in practise, is the first step towards creating a strategy for how to get a new technology implemented. By conducting a survey including both contractors and developers in Sweden an overview of the building sectors standpoint on environmental sustainability is achieved. In order to refine the information and achieve a more detailed picture of the issue the survey was followed up by In-depth interviews. The findings show that valuation techniques are varying a lot between companies but surprisingly many of the companies do use inferior methods such as pay back-time for investment calculations. Overall in the construction business technical and economic risk aspects are not being valued explicitly but rather through the use of product ratings and brand promise of well-known suppliers. Negative externalities are not being included in the calculations and the valuation of intangibles is not done explicitly but rather seen as implicitly derived from the cost and value of sustainability certifications.
