Environmental ethics and natural resources’ management: understanding the basis of economic issues / Ética ambiental y gestión de los recursos naturales: entendiendo la base de la problemática económicaArbulú Villanueva, Italo 25 September 2017 (has links)
The discussion about this global framework of rights and duties, between humans and other living things and nonliving things, has given rise to a fascinating body of literature in the field of ethics that has been called environmental ethics. The aim of this paper is twofold, first it seeks to present the current elements in the field of environmental politics governing the definition of economic policies on the use of environment and natural resources. Second, it suggests the appearance of other thinking that can influence the way society evaluates the human-nature relationship.

Sustentabilidade e contratações públicas no Brasil: Direito, Ética Ambiental e Desenvolvimento / Sustainability and Public Procurement in Brazil: Law, Environmental Ethics and Development.Teresa Villac Pinheiro 16 August 2017 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the insertion of sustainability in Brazilian public procurement, from an interdisciplinary perspective that relates Law, Environmental Ethics and Development. The study puts under analysis the development model adopted in Brazil, focused on economic growth, and its resulting limitations. Sustainability is examined as a value and a principle, in a multidimensional content that surpasses the classical tripod based on environmental, social and economic dimensions, with emphasis on Ethics. From a Philosophy of Law approach, Law is scrutinized in its functions of contention, economic legitimation and status quo maintenance, its relations with economic development, as well as its potential to unleash social transformation, by replacing a rationality based on the myths of law and progress with emerging paradigms founded on Environmental Ethics and Sustainability as a principle and a value. The research demonstrates that Brazilian sustainable public procurement is a vector for the achievement of an ideal of development not restricted to economic aspects, but focused on human liberties, intergenerational welfare, environmental preservation and reduction of social inequalities, by means of an active and transforming Law and the connections between theory and practice. The work concludes that Brazilian sustainable public procurement breaks the hegemony of regulation that characterizes Law and Public Administration, due to the emancipatory content that can be assumed by Law and the articulation of the agents in network.

Urban Sustainability and the Extinction of Experience: Acknowledging Drivers of Biocultural Loss for Socio-ecological Well-beingPoole, Alexandria K. 12 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation I address urban sustainability with a focus on loss of cultural heritage and ecological knowledge by expanding the concept “extinction of experience” (EoE). Conceptualized by conservationist Robert Michael Pyle, EoE is the loss of nature experiences leading to apathy towards biodiversity and degradation of the common habitat. I expand upon Pyle’s formulation of the concept by considering the EoE cycle as an indirect driver that amplifies biodiversity losses. Additionally, I introduce the analysis of interrelated losses of biological and cultural diversity in relation to EoE. With a biocultural approach I discuss that EoE is tied to the infrastructural inertia within the global urban economy. I propose that addressing the EoE cycle is critical in that as a complex and multi-faceted process, it cements threats to biological and cultural diversity as permanent fixtures within society by obscuring their significance in light of economic development. This cycle remains a hidden problematic in that it perpetuates the environmental crisis while making such losses invisible within day-to-day lifestyle habits, constructing an emerging urban culture within the global economy that is ignorant of ecological processes and sustainability requirements. I frame the implications of EoE with an analysis of the newly proposed revisions of the UN Sustainable Development Goals voted on in September 2015 to prioritize local ecological knowledge and biocultural heritage.

Om Jesus kommer imorgon vill jag ändå plantera mitt äppelträd : en kvalitativ innehållsanalys av 14 artiklar om klimathotet och klimatengagemang från kristna tidskrifterThelin, Klara January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore the relevance and function of Christian reli-gious belief in constructing views on climate change (sv: klimathot) and climate action (sv: klimatengagemang). To ensure a focus on religiosity and the construc-tion of personal beliefs rather than systematic theology the study used psycholo-gist Crystal L. Parks theory on religious meaning making. Fourteen articles about climate change with denominational elements from the Christian newspapers Dagen, Insidan, Kyrkans Tidning, Budbäraren and Världen Idag were analysed using a qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the articles had ex-panded the extent of religion to encompass both climate change and climate ac-tion. Through truth claims and references to the Bible the threat of climate change was incorporated in the narrative of Genesis and humanity’s fall from grace and climate change was portrayed as the result of humanity’s failure at properly stew-arding nature. The environment was assigned value through depictions of the en-vironment as a creation by God. Climate action was presented as a necessity and a duty with references to God giving humanity the responsibility of stewarding na-ture. The ascription of religious meaning to climate action also meant that the re-ligiosity of the authors functioned as a motivation in regards to climate action. The religiosity, as portrayed in the articles, also exhibited a transcendent function in the case where the authors described their stewardship as a united effort with God. The idea that God was helping humanity in their stewardship and had the power to renew the world for the better also functioned as a mitigation to climate anxiety.

Teologie úcty k životu v díle Jana Pavla II. a její možná aplikace pro environmentální etiku / Theology of respect to life in the work of John Paul II. and its possible aplication for environmental ethicsRohlena, Jan January 2013 (has links)
Christianity is for the relationship to nature repeatedly exposed to criticism and expectations. The general objective of this work is to point out the legitimacy of one or the other.More specifically, this thesis deals with the position of man in creation and its relation to the world. Environmental Sustainability as Leverage to Increase the Prominence, Legitimacy, and Funding of Global Reproductive RightsDelacroix, Celine 21 March 2022 (has links)
This thesis is based on the premise that reproductive rights and environmental sustainability have synergistic interests: human population growth increases environmental impact and access to family planning triggers reduced fertility levels. Despite increasing scientific evidence indicating that the size of the global population matters for environmental sustainability, and by extension, that fulfilling reproductive rights may be beneficial for the latter, the linkages between reproductive rights and environmental sustainability have been largely understudied, ignored, and left out of environmental policy and reproductive rights agendas. Because of the complexity of this interdisciplinary field and its associated ethical questions, many researchers and policy makers have chosen to avoid this sensitive and polarizing issue altogether. However, capitalizing on these linkages could represent significant opportunity to advance the reproductive rights and environmental movements, and increase the prominence, legitimacy, and funding of global family planning services, in particular. This thesis uses an action research approach to explore the current framing of the reproductive rights and environmental sustainability linkage, study the perceptions of stakeholders of both the reproductive health and rights and environmental sustainability movements on this issue, and elaborate a strategic communication roadmap to promote its operationalisation.

Analysis of Environmental-Ethical Concerns Within the United States Funeral IndustryWisnewski, Olivia Ann 18 September 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the failings in environmental-ethics present in the United States funeral industry, focusing on the lack of environmental ethical guidelines at an industrial and policy level. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach through the lenses of environmental science, philosophical ethical considerations surrounding policy-based advocacy and ecocritical approaches to the concepts of reciprocity and harm reduction, this thesis makes recommendations to close the gaps in environmental ethical oversight. Focus is placed on mitigation of environmental harms resulting from changes in policy and legislation, and in-industry oversight, with an emphasis on the support of ecologically beneficial methods of the disposition of human remains. / Master of Arts / The funeral industry in the United States has developed in a way that eschews environmental consciousness in the services available to consumers. This thesis examines the historical development of the relationship between the funeral industry and the environment, and the way the rise of the corporate funeral model ignores environmental concerns, as well as presents contemporary environmental issues that impact the industry. Additionally, the thesis explores the gaps regarding environmental impact present in the ethical guidelines the funeral industry adheres to, and the lack of environmental accountability coming from both within the industry and from regulatory bodies and the United States government. Finally, this thesis provides recommendations for the industry, and associated advocacy groups surrounding corrections and policy and practice changes that will support more a more environmentally friendly version of the funeral industry. In this case, environmental friendliness is defined by practices which take pollution impacts into account, as well as consider the sustainability of resource use incurred by both traditional and emergent technologies.
