Conversion to a fossil free industry : Investigating certifications as motivatorsfor pro-environmental initiativesVinnars, Jacob, Vinnars, Johan, Buratovic, Emma January 2020 (has links)
Climate awareness is growing every day and pressure and expectations of powerful measures from companies are increasing. At the same time, the incentives for many companies to address climate change are small due to limited economic benefits. This master thesis will therefore examine how external certificates that address carbon neutrality can act as a motivator for more sustainable environmental initiatives. The work will also examine the important success factors that exist regarding the design of environmental certificates. The study was conducted through qualitative semi-structured interviews with representatives from several large companies and pro-environmental organizations. Through a detailed analysis, the results showed that an external certificate can strengthen a company's legitimacy and competitiveness, which in previous studies have proven to be motivators for increased environmental initiatives. The certificate itself cannot, however, be seen as a motivator. The conclusion further showed that a global standard is more sought after than a certificate. The study also resulted in the identification of three cornerstones for a successful certificate. These are: working with a credible NGO to achieve high credibility, base all criteria on research, and take into account the views of the industry. Three separate in-depth technical advancement studies have also been carried out and are presented separately in the appendix.

The pursuance for sustainability has been a topic debated among managers and academics around the world. Economic activities generate environmental impacts resulting from its operations, and also the logistics industry. This topic has attracted considerable attention from the international scientific community, however, studies on that issue in Brazil are incipient. The structured literature review mapped out green initiatives undertaken only by Logistics Service Providers (LSPs), and classified in the form of a framework as internal and external to the organization. In this context and according to the state-of-the-art of the research field pointed out, the aim of this research was to identify environmental sustainability initiatives practiced by some Brazilian LSP companies, and analyze the scope of the initiatives. The chosen research method was an exploratory study, with semi-structured questionnaire, and survey data collection. With the support of the NVivo10 software, it was possible to understand the companies studied, since it facilitated the analysis allowing to plan and classify information from three other open questions composed in the questionnaire, as well to search for patterns in respondents' answers. The results indicate that the surveyed companies have carried out several actions in favor of environmental sustainability, however some of them not with all potential. And most of the carried out initiatives are intraorganizational, when compared to the interorganizational ones. / CNPq: 134565/2015-0

The purpose of this research was to examine the appropriation of value generated by environmental certifications for office buildings. To answer this question, we first examined the Brazilian universe of this type of certification through documentary research, which showed that LEED is the most used certification in office buildings. Then, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three groups of stakeholders: user companies, real estate investment fund managers and developers. As a tool to triangulate the primary data, a consultant specialized in the process of this type of certification was interviewed. The results suggested that the three groups appropriated the value generated by LEED through lower operating expenses; User and incorporating companies have identified that this appropriation also takes place through reputational gains; And developers and fund managers pointed out access to renters who require this certification. In addition, the developers cited a higher rate of occupation of the projects; And the user companies mentioned access to new knowledge, advantages resulting from a better internal environmental quality and more professional management of the building. This last factor, not identified in the literature, constitutes a relevant contribution of this research, since it adds to the green buildings literature a new aspect to be investigated.
