A comparative study of the employment equity at the University of Limpopo and the University of Venda for Science and TechnologyAjani, Yetunde January 2005 (has links)
Thesis (M.A) (Psychology)--University of Limpopo,2005. / This study investigates developments with regard to employment equity at the University
of Limpopo, Turfloop Campus (UL) and University of Venda for Science and
Technology (UNIVEN). Questionnaires from 139 respondents at UNIVEN and 159 at
UL were analyzed. All the respondents are staff members of both institutions drawn
from academic, administrative and technical staff. It was found that there have been
positive changes for designated groups since the Employment Equity Act, No. 55 of
1998, was promulgated. When the two institutions were compared, independent sample
T-tests indicated that there was no significant difference between the two institutions in
terms of progress made in employment equity. From the findings it was thus concluded
that there has been a gradual improvement in recruitment procedures, advertising and
selection criteria, appointments and the appointment process, job classification and
grading, remuneration, employment benefits and terms of conditions of employment, job
assignments, the working environment and facilities, training and development,
performance evaluation systems, promotion, transfer, demotion, and disciplinary
measures among others at UNIVEN and UL. / Espen Walderhaug for financial assistance

Twenty Years and Counting: Examining the Development of Equity and Inclusive Education Policy in Ontario (1990-2010)SEGEREN, ALLISON 19 July 2011 (has links)
Despite a long history of multicultural education initiatives in Ontario (Chan, 2007), Harper (1997) argues that “racially motivated violence, gender and sexual harassment, and cultural and class conflict that continue to occur in Ontario schools” demonstrate the need for new and better ways to respond to student diversity (p. 203). The Ontario Ministry of Education responded to these inadequacies by mandating that school boards develop equity and inclusive education policies, as specified in Policy/Program Memorandum No. 119 (2009) Developing and Implementing Equity and Inclusive Education Policies in Ontario Schools. Still, a considerable and observable gap exists between the goals of policy and the realities of practice in many Ontario schools. A necessary starting point in analyzing this gap is to examine the development of equity education policy in Ontario as documented in PPM No. 119 (2009).
Relying on document analysis and policy analysis as the sole methods of data collection, I documented the ideological, socio-cultural, political, legal, and economic context from which PPM No. 119 (2009) developed in order to understand what groups of stakeholders were included in the development of PPM No. 119 (2009) and whose values the policy document ultimately represents.
Collected documents that represent both the federal and provincial level of policymaking and a variety of regional stakeholders and policy actors illustrated that, despite a shift to focus on equity, conceptions of liberal multiculturalism continue to influence education policy in Ontario. Authoritative decision makers at the Ontario Ministry of Education ultimately trumped the recommendations made by a variety of stakeholder groups and policy actors during the process of policy decision-making.
I concluded that the process of equity education policy development must become a more inclusive process, reflecting the identities, values, and experiences of school administrators, teachers, and students. However, if the goals of equity in education remain framed within the discourse of liberal multiculturalism and the hierarchical process of policymaking is not deconstructed, the goal of equity may continue to evade Ontario’s education system. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2011-07-18 17:16:53.936

An analysis of the sociological variables which separate the employed from the unemployed in a typical peri-urban community.Naidoo, Nirmala. January 2007 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to establish the extent to which the un employed people in South Africa are placed at a disadvantage in the labour market as compared to the employed people. Two sample populations were investigated in a typical peri-urban community and certain variables were studied, namely demographic, educational and employment variables. The results strongly indicate that the unemployed people are regarded as 'under class' citizens and lack the protection they deserve in the labour market. Based on their backgrounds they are severely disadvantaged and if no positive steps are taken to improve the situation by training and development, entre preneurial support and government projects especially in the rural areas, the levels of unemployment will continue escalating accompanied by increasing poverty and high crime levels. This creates a vicious cycle acting as a deterrent to overseas investors. From this study it can be surmised that the creation of jobs only is not the solution to the problem we are faced with. The solution is certainly more holistic. Another area of study was to establish whether the current Labour Market Model is an appropriate one taking into consideration the current environ ment of escalating unemployment and poverty. The model is regarded as be ing inflexible in an environment such as ours. More flexibility may help curb the escalating levels of unemployment. / Thesis (MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2007.
