Structural parameter based design and optimisation for dual-band ESPAR antenna systemBembe, Mncedisi Jacob 12 March 2012 (has links)
M.Ing. / This work considers a dual band electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna system. This system is designed with one actively fed radiating element and N-parasitic radiating elements. The radiation pattern can be electronically controlled by means of the loads terminating the parasitic elements. The antenna system is designed as ESPAR to have a minimum number of controlling elements thereby minimising the power consumed. The dual band operation of this antenna is for the frequency bands of the wireless local area network (WLAN), which are 2.412-2.482 GHz for IEEE 802.11b/g (known as the 2.4 GHz band) and 5.15-5.825 GHz for IEEE 802.11a (known as the 5 GHz band). In the upper band, only the 5.8 GHz sub-band was considered. The dual-band capability was targeted by conducting a structural parameter modification on the antenna system. The structural modification involves optimisation of the length of the active element, the length of the parasitic element, the distance of the parasitic element from the active element and most importantly, by application of a loading technique on the elements. The loading was done by using optimisation tools, such as fminsearch, fminbnd and the genetic algorithm. The specific circuit that was used for the loading was a series connection inductors inserted into the antenna’s elements at positions found via a global optimization.. The method used was to first identify the optimal length per specific resonant frequency and consider the optimal length with respect to both resonant frequencies. The second step was to load the three resulting optimised different monopoles, and the loading with results closest to the requirements. The optimum monopole of the three in the second step was then used as the fixed input parameter for the main optimisation of ESPAR antenna. Using a ground plane with a skirt, an acceptable return loss performance has been achieved for the antenna's main building M.J. Bembe ii block, a monopole element, in both frequency bands. The challenge was found in steering of the beam in different directions; it was then concluded that the usage of more elements could provide the necessary freedom for the optimisation process. Six elements were arranged symmetrically close to the active fed element in order to achieve a dual band resonance, with different designs meeting the requirements differently. This is the first report showing an ESPAR antenna optimisation which includes the loading of elements with lengths and distance optimisation.

MSC Dissertation / In this paper, the Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Radiator (ESPAR) antenna, developed by the Advanced Telecommunications
Research Institute (ATR) in Japan was analyzed to determine its feasibility as a low cost direction finding (DF)
system. Simulations of the antenna were performed in SuperNEC and Matlab was used to determine the direction of arrival
(DOA) using the Reactance Domain multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Results show the ideal configuration
has 6 parasitic elements with a diameter of 0.5 . Up to 5 periodic, uncorrelated signals spread 360° in azimuth and above 45°
elevation produce sharp peaks in the MUSIC spectra. Azimuth separations of only 2° at 40 dB are resolvable while signals
arriving with 25% full power are still detectable. For the DOA to be resolved the radiation pattern should be asymmetrical and
hence the reactance set should have a range of unequal values. Comparative results show that the 6 element ESPAR offers excellent
overall performance despite the reduction in cost and is comparable in performance to the 6 element uniform linear array.

With the fast adoption of LTE and IEEE 802.11N, more devices are employing multiple antennas to boost the data rate and reliability of the communication link. Traditionally, fixed antennas are used in such devices. In recent years, reconfigurable antennas have been sought out to further boost the performance, which can adaptor to the changing wireless channel by altering their radiation characteristics, and maintain or exceed the performance of fixed antennas. This thesis studies the possibility of performance increase using pattern reconfigurable antennas as receivers. Their performance potential was first estimated using simulations, and then demonstrated using two electrically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR) antennas against a pair of monopole antennas on a hardware bit error rate (BER) testbed. The former produces equal performance in BER with certain pattern combinations and excels in theoretical capacity with substantial lead making pattern reconfigurable antenna a potent option as receiver in MIMO-related
applications.

Varactor-based reactive network design for ESPAR phased array and antenna applicationsNelson, Paul Jeffrey 01 January 2008 (has links)
Widespread adoption of phased array technologies has been hindered primarily by the high cost associated Transmitter/Receiver (T/R) modules. In conventional phased arrays, these vital elements often comprise up to fifty-percent of the entire array's expense. Recent development of a new type of phased array - the Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiator (ESPAR) - is underway at laboratories around the globe. This innovative concept utilizes mutual coupling to excite neighboring (passive) elements placed in the near field of a center-driven (active) radiator. Using this method, T/R modules are only required for the active radiators. The radiation pattern of an ESP AR is controlled electronically by means of variable reactive loading of the passive antenna elements. In order to attain the full range of beam steering offered by this array, a broad range of reactance is required at the input port of each passive antenna. This thesis presents a varactor-based reactive network design that can accurately and reliably produce a wide range of reactance. The purpose of this research was to design a network compatible with the requirements of the ESP AR phased array, which is in development at the Antennas, RF, and Microwave Integrated Systems CARMI) laboratory at the University of Central Florida. To this end, an elaborate survey weighing different varactor-based reactive network and DC bias tee designs was conducted. This study took into account the practical issues and limiting factors that arose during design and implementation of such a network. While this specific network design was constrained to operate at 3 GHz, the proposed design methodology may be applied to realize reactive networks at other frequencies. This flexibility allows incorporation into similar ESPAR's and a plethora of other relevant devices.

Le programme d'éducation sexuelle fondé sur le pouvoir d'agir et de réfléchir (ESPAR) vise à réduire l'incidence des' grossesses non planifiées chez les adolescentes de première secondaire de quatre écoles de Québec-Centre, milieu où l'indice de défavorisation est élevé. L'objectif de l'étude est de vérifier les déterminants structuro-pédagogiques qui affectent l'implantation du programme dans les écoles. Une analyse de contenu a été exécutée à partir d'entrevues semi-structurées menées auprès de 4 directeurs d'établissement et de 7 enseignants ayant dispensé ESPAR. Suite à l'investigation, le climat de l'établissement, le style de gestion, les personnes-ressources ainsi que les procédures disciplinaires sont des caractéristiques identifiées comme ayant influencé l'implantation du programme ESPAR

La présente recherche vise l'évaluation de l'implantation du programme d'Éducation Sexuelle fondé sur le Pouvoir d'Agir et de Réfléchir (ESPAR), l'évaluation du développement des trois objectifs collectifs que sont l'entraide, l'esprit critique et la participation des élèves ainsi que la relation entre ces deux variables. Le type de recherche évaluative approprié est une étude de cas multiples qui permet de recourir à diverses sources et méthodes de collecte de données. Dans ce mémoire, les fiches-bilan remplies par les enseignantes et les grilles d'observation complétées par des observatrices externes sont utilisées afin qu'il y ait triangulation entre les éléments observés. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les objectifs d'implantation et les objectifs collectifs ont été atteints. Cette étude révèle aussi que le climat de la classe est positivement relié à l'entraide et à l'esprit critique manifestés par les élèves.
