The Integration of Female Refugees in Tanzania

Kelly, Cliona January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the integration of female refugees who struggle to establish themselves in their new homes. Integration is widely researched in the field of migration, however the female perspective in African countries is minimally present in this debate. A focus is placed on barriers to their integration, and whether this affects their social and economic integration. Remaining obstacles to integration for refugees can be overcome by incorporating the female perspective into which barriers they face in integrating into their community. To the author’s knowledge, research in female refugee integration in Tanzania is scarcely produced in the academic field. Recent figures published by the World Bank (2020) showsthat the number of female migrants in the Sub-Saharan region was 48.3%. This number will only increase in the coming decades, particularly in Africa (Rubiano-Matulevich and Beegle, 2018). Therefore, investigating females' needs in this region proves critical to improving integration in the years to come. Refugee integration is the academic topic underpinning the context of this research. This topic fits into the category of peace and development because the subjects studied link into the economic, social, and political development of the area and region they are living in. The research is conducted employing a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and key informants in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The information they reveal in the interviews are used as data. The data is transcribed and coded into thematic subheadings in the results chapter. Ager and Strang’s (2008) integration framework in conjunction with intersectional feminist theory are the frameworks used to help analyse the data. Limitations arose from participants being unwilling to answer some questions because of the nature of the topic.  The research revealed that women and girl refugees experience barriers to integration in domains of their health, security, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Poor nutritional standards and inadequate infrastructure leave females with excess struggles as refugees. This is the case because of the intersecting categories they are placed in regarding their gender, age, and status as refugee. Improved facilities and responses to refugees that are gender specific is a way to improve integration outcomes for female refugees in Tanzania.

Swedish Colorblindness and Post-Racism : A Study on Colorblindness and Post-Racism and its influence on Swedish law

Crooks, Hunter January 2021 (has links)
Although the reality of Swedish race relations is very complex, Sweden presents itself to the world as a colorblind utopia where race does not exist. Since the mid-1900s, Sweden has embraced an anti-racist rhetoric that developed into post-racism and colorblindness, where race is not seen, and racial discrimination is not acknowledged as a societal problem. This study seeks to problematize the complexities of Swedish post-racism and colorblindness. By drawing on previous research, it is clear that the Swedish hegemony has not been thoroughly deconstructed, which necessitates further studies in this area. By drawing on the WPR approach to poststructural policy analysis, this study looks at how Swedish law is influenced by the narratives of colorblindness and details the shortcomings of excluding the term ‘race’ from legislation. Furthermore, this study employs expert interviews to access the knowledge of experts on how colorblindness and post-racism came to be. It is concluded in this thesis that the post-racist and colorblind perception of Sweden influences Swedish law in negative ways and that the removal of the term race is a denial of the existence of a racial hierarchy in Sweden.

Inre utlänningskontroll i Schengens Sverige : Dilemma i polisers arbete

Hydén, Sophie, Lundberg, Anna January 2003 (has links)

Williams, Susann January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine the research described in scientific literature about the problems affecting the nurse in caring for ethnic minority patients and how to improve the possibilities for the nurse in giving care that is appropriate for this group of patients. The method used was a literature review. Eleven articles, chosen by a literature search in databases on the internet by using words which are relevant for the subject, were used. The results showed that there were numerous problems for the nurse in caring for patients from foreign cultures in the form of language and communication problems, cultural obstacles, and problems and obstacles related to the nurse herself and to the health care system and to the society in general. The study showed that a questionnaire, already developed, could be used in the admission of patients. Measures of priority had to be taken in order to reduce the language barrier that is a major obstacle. Education about cultures showed to be of great importance in giving knowledge about one’s own and foreign cultures. A change of attitude toward cultural curiosity, a more open state of mind and humility was necessary in order to reduce the problems with transcultural care and resources from the society and new priorities from the health care system was of great importance.

Uncontrollable Bodies : Self-harm behaviour among male undocumented migrants detained in Southern Italian CPR

Tagliente, Giada January 2023 (has links)
In response to the recent surge in migrants entering Italy, the Italian government has implemented several laws since early 2023 to expand the administrative detention system for migrants - mostly males - pending repatriation, commonly known as Centri di Permanenza per il Rimpatr io (CPR). Despite the large body of evidence provided by national humanitarian organizations and academic research concerning their overall detrimental effect - both on national budgets and detainees’ psychophysiological health –, these centers are still deemed as the best way to deal with the migration phenomenon. Nevertheless, the high incidence of self harm episodes recorded within these venues, together with their secrecy and isolation symptomize their problematic nature. Thus, focusing on three different administrative detention facilities located in the Southern Italian regions of Apulia and Sicily, this thesis aims at penetrating these closeted realities in order to raise awareness about the prisoners’ true living conditions and grasp the potential political weight of their self injurious gestures. Moreover, it argues for the need to partially de medicalize the approach toward this specific health issue, as it prevents to acknowledge it as a full fledged expression of rebellion against this specific detention regimeand, simultaneously, to identify the strategies used by authorities to suppress it.

Color-Blindness in Swedish Media? : A Comparative Study of Media's Portrayal of Syrian and Ukrainian Refugees

Lindqvist, Hugo January 2023 (has links)
A comparative study on how Swedish media portrayed Syrian refugees in 2015 compared to how the same media portrayed Ukrainian refugees in 2022. This paper presents a thematic analysis of seventynine newspaper articles published in 2015 and 2022 by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The comparison was made to see if the chosen articles portrayed these different groups of refugees differently, and I later engage in a discussion based on the results of the analysis. The thematic analysis showed a difference between the cases in how different themes manifested, as well as what themes were given more space in each case. The discussion later provides a set of different alternative explanations on why these differences exist – engaging with different theories and explanations as to why these cases had such a different impact on and given different portrayals by the Swedish media.

Post-Migration Fatherhood : Immigrants' Experiences of Swedish Gender and Family Norms

Bauduin, Mirana January 2023 (has links)
Sweden is a country known for its gender-equal family policies, which prompt fathers toshare childcare responsibilities with their partners. However, lots of immigrants living inSweden might face cultural clashes, if they come from countries where family norms assignfathers the role of breadwinners and mothers that of homemakers. This thesis therefore aimsat studying the experience of fatherhood in Sweden for immigrants from different culturalbackgrounds. It attempts to understand how they relate to the Swedish state's incentives, howthey navigate between their two cultures, and how their social networks influence theirexperience. The findings are presented in the form of a typology of the forms of fatherhoodthat immigrants can develop in a post-migration context. Three types were identified:Modernized-Traditional fathers, Adaptive fathers and Allowed-To-Be-New fathers. Thisresearch thus contributes to the literature on post-migration parenthood and offers insightsinto immigrants’ realities for professionals and policymakers.

Looking for Belonging: Ruptures and Ligaments : A Study of Biographic Narratives of Asylum-Seeking Persons in Europe

Jorge, Beatriz January 2023 (has links)
This project deals with the experiences of asylum-seeking persons in their struggle to receive protection in different European countries, exploring how the sense of belonging is shaped during fragmented migration journeys. Conducting biographic-narrative interviews with five persons I met while working in a community centre in Greece, the research shifts the gaze from exclusionary citizenship regimes to migrant agency, revealing the distinct tactics, perceptions and performances of belonging on the move. The findings highlight the dynamic nature of belonging, challenging the notion that migration necessarily implies a rupture with significant attachments. Encounters with state and asylum authorities and regulations are experienced as renewed instances of insecurity, hindering belonging, whereas the community centre offers solace and alternative membership. The research partners express a pragmatic sense of “elective belonging” in Germany and Switzerland, based on long-awaited security and existential mobility, despite weakened community ties and the constraints imposed by European migration policies.
