Mission Impossible? Universal Alcohol Prevention at Workplaces in Sweden

Eriksson Tinghög, Mimmi January 2013 (has links)
Since the mid 1990s, alcohol policy in Sweden has undergone major changes and the restrictive policy instruments have been weakened. Alternative and compensatory preventive measures have been sought and the workplace is repeatedly referred to as an important and appropriate arena for prevention. Universal methods, such as disseminating information and education programs, are seen as crucial in order for individuals to be able to make informed choices about their alcohol consumption. The overall purpose of this thesis is to analyze the prerequisites for and the possibilities and barriers associated with alcohol education programs at workplaces. The first paper investigates the general interest in alcohol prevention at workplaces where no interventions had been undertaken. The second paper is an effect study which investigates the effects of a short alcohol education program provided to those employed at a company in Stockholm. In the third paper, the effects of a day-long alcohol education program provided to all persons employed by a municipality are studied. The fourth paper is an interview study, in which the aim is to analyze how the participants in alcohol education programs view their participation and the content and legitimacy of the intervention. The findings suggest that interest in prevention at workplaces is low among employers. In addition, there are difficulties linked to implementation and evaluation, and in achieving and registering any substantial effects. The effect studies noted a significant increase in alcohol-related knowledge and that binge drinking decreased among those who drank the most. The employees found the education programs interesting and valuable but mostly for others, i.e. those who drink too much. Taken together, the studies suggest that it is not reasonable to believe that workplace-based prevention will become a common and effective measure or that it will compensate for the weakened alcohol policy in Sweden. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Accepted. Bedömningssamtal inom Barn- och Ungdomspsykiatrin

Eriksson, Louise January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the structured and evidence-based assessment tool/method The Brief Child and Family Phone Interview (BCFPI) trough a social psychology perspective of conversation. The aim was especially to seek an understanding of the method considering aspects of children’s participation. The research question was: how do the method users apprehend the advantages and the limitations of the BCFPI method considering aspects of children’s participation. The study was carried out trough a qualitative analyze and sex respondents in two child psychiatry clinics in Sweden were interviewed. A symbolic interactionistic perspective were used to analyze the results. The results showed that it was mostly advantages that were discussed and only a few limitations were presented. No reflections about children’s participation were expressed. Together the results and analyze contributed to an understanding of the BCFPI method as a restricted method considering social psychology perspectives and perspectives of children’s participations. One interpretation of the results showed that much focus was on the effectiveness of the method. In the future it could therefor be significant to reflect upon social psychology aspects as well as aspects of children’s participation regarding the BCFPI method.

Autism i skolan - Beprövade metoder att utveckla skrivförmågan hos elever med autism / Autism in School - Evidence-Based Methods to Develop Writing Skills of Students with Autism

Streblow, Heike January 2022 (has links)
Abstract Streblow, Heike (2022). Autism in School - Evidence Based Methods to Develop Writing Skills of Students with AutismType of Essay: Master’s thesis (15 credits) Master’s degree, 120 credits, Malmo University, Department of School Development and Leadership Malmo University  There is a great number of international and national studies on younger pupils with autism. Some research indicates that there is a gap between what research results show and what impact it has on classroom activities. Aim: The aim of this study is to find out what evidence-based methods four students with autism and four teachers find successful when developing students’ writing skills. The participating students of this study were between 14 and 15 years old. Research questions: 1.                      What methods do students use to develop their writing skills? 2.                      What methods do students consider helping them the most? 3.                      What methods do teachers use to develop students' writing skills? 4.                      What methods do teacher consider helping students with autism to develop their writing skills? 5.                      How do teachers describe successful teaching to develop students' writing skills in mainstream classrooms versus self-contained classrooms? Theoretical framework: Dewey's democracy and education and learning by doing (hands-on thinking), Vygotsky's sociocultural theory and Bandura's social cognitive theory are used when analyzing the results. Method:This study uses triangulation with both quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews) methods. Results:The results of this study show that there are similarities but differences, too, in what evidence-based methods students or teachers use to develop the students’ writing skills. Students for example rate to use technical devices (with text-to-speech and speech-to text software), writing in pairs and to have extended time when writing highest, their teachers on the other hand rate supporting questions, model texts and goalsetting highest. Teachers consider modelling and scaffolding as being very important. The results of this study also show that effective methods proven by Asaro-Saddler et al. (2017) are both used in mainstream and self-contained classrooms in Sweden.Teachers point out that each student with autism is an individual and that there isn´t one solution that fits all because of that. They discuss furthermore that there should be flexible circumstances in school organization that make it possible to act quickly. Future Research: Future research should be conducted on older students with autism and their development of writing skills.  Implications for special education: The results of this study show the importance of:·      organizing school environments in a way that students with ASD can participate in the curriculum, ·      providing them with digital assistant devices and if necessary,·      giving them the opportunity to fulfill their education in self-contained classrooms.Special educational needs coordinators need to organize, together with the principals, rich opportunities for teachers to plan their lessons together in a way that students with ASD will meet the same teaching scaffolding methods to develop and improve their writing skills. It is also important to have a dialogue with teachers to deepen their understanding of working with students with ASD.It is necessary to build consistent relationships between the students and their teachers.

Integrating yoga as a method in clinical social work dealing with addiction : Bridging Eastern and Western perspective. Annika Wincent

Wincent, Annika January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis it will be discussed whether the body-mind-spirit aspect is a missing component in Western methods in clinical social work and if yoga could contribute to a more holistic multi model in this area. Yoga includes physical postures, controlled breathing exercises, meditation and attitudes in life of no harming of oneself or any living being. Yoga invites the practitioner to enhance the selfdiscipline and control over and regulation of impulses, thoughts and feelings. In the result it will be presented in what way this Eastern discipline have influenced the participants recovery. It will be discussed weather yoga is a tool to get in contact with the body, breath and mind and if the enhanced awareness helps to control anger, stress, anxiety and craving - overwhelming feelings that can be triggers for a substance abuse. The thesis is a qualitative study with the aim of exploring the experience of yoga as a complimentary method in addiction recovery. The interviews were conducted in three different rehab centres of Kripa Foundation in India in form of focus groups and individual interviews.

We do a lot of things, but we don’t know what we’re doing right”  : - a qualitative study about police officers’ attitude towards research and evidence based methods of policing

Juntunen Lindberg, Linda, Lindström, Therese Thette January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine police officers’ attitudes towards research and evidence-based methods of policing in the field of crime prevention. We conducted semi-structured interviews of 9 police officers’ and performed a qualitative content analysis. Our results showed that the police are using parts of evidence-based methods, specifically Problem Oriented Policing and Community Oriented Policing. There were no organization around which methods were used and no knowledge about how the methods work. The police interviewed wanted research to play a larger role in their work and believed incorporating research would make their crime-prevention work more effective.
