The exchange rate exposure of Taiwanese banking institutions

Lan, Li-huei 20 April 2006 (has links)
Regulators only require banks to manage their short-term exchange rate risk stringently. A possible reason is that the prevailing capital-market methodology cannot determine the long-term exchange rate risk. Using the real performance of operating incomes, this paper investigates the impact of fluctuating foreign currencies on the values of Taiwanese banking institutions, and decomposes the overall exchange rate risk into short-term and long-term components. We not only overcome the deficiency of prior studies that have limited success in detecting significant currency exposure, but also measure correct economic exposure that firms are confronted with. Comparing with the capital market approach, we find the evidence of the relative strength of cash flows to detect currency exposure. After controlling for the impact of interest rates, we find that, over the time period examined, 61.54% of the sample firms have a significant currency exposure, which is larger than those documented by prior research. Our result also shows that the existence of significant long-term exchange rate risk is prevalent among Taiwanese banking institutions. Furthermore, US dollar (the currency of a nation which is Taiwan¡¦s largest exporting country) has an opposite effect as opposed to Japanese Yen (the currency of a nation which is Taiwan¡¦s largest importing partner). Our results have policy implications that banking institutions should manage long-term currency exposure.

Exchange rate risk and its determinants. : Evidence from international stock markets

de Oliveira Andersson, Daniela January 2005 (has links)

This paper evaluates if international stock markets are exposed to fluctuation in the

exchange rate and whether this exposure is related to exports, imports and inflation. Eight

countries are studied: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Hong Kong, Sweden, Switzerland, the

United Kingdom and the United States. The empirical investigation covers the period

from 1995 to 2004 and the estimation is conducted using the framework of Patro, D.K.,

Wald, J.K. and Wu, Y. (2002). The empirical findings show that all international stock

markets are exposed to exchange rate risk, except for Brazil. The amount of exchange rate

exposure is found to be sensitive to a country’s export, import and inflation. The results

imply that there are predictable relationship between changes in the return of the national

stock index return and fluctuation in the exchange rate. In addition, imports and exports

as well as inflation may be useful in predicting exchange rate risks.

Benefits and costs of hedging the CAD/USD exchange rate and its effect on mitigating CWB Wheat Pool account deficit probabilities

Acton, Douglas Richard 12 January 2009
The CWB has the stated objective of increasing producer returns through maximizing sales revenue and minimizing operating costs. To maximize producer returns the CWB derives value from single-desk selling, price pooling and the initial price guarantee.
The initial price allows the CWB to offer a price floor to producers which is guaranteed by the Federal government. This guarantee has come under review in recent World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations with opponents stating that the Federal government is unfairly subsidizing producers. Therefore developing methods to hedge the initial payment and remove the CWB dependency on the Federal government guarantee has taken on considerable importance.
Hedging the initial price has two components, the first is commodity risk, and the second is currency risk. Commodity risk basically consists of the risk that wheat prices decrease significantly from the announcement of the initial payment resulting in a wheat pool account deficit. Currency risk relates to the risk of the Canadian dollar (CAD) increasing vis-à-vis the United States dollar (USD) resulting in lower wheat prices. This is due to the fact most sales are made in USD, necessitating the conversion of USD for CAD in order to pay Canadian producers. Given recent increases in exchange rate volatility this later risk is important.
The goal of this study is to evaluate the currency risk present in the initial payment and to examine alternate means of mitigating this risk. A number of call option strategies will be evaluated to determine its ability to reduce the probability of a wheat pool account deficit by offsetting the effect of a rising CAD.
The policy variables analyzed in the thesis are the initial payment as a percentage of the Pool Return Outlook for wheat and the strike price of the call options purchased. Therefore the study will examine the effect of inputting varying initial payment levels and different strike prices for the call options in the model. This will allow for quantifiable insight into cost versus risk reduction comparisons. These comparisons will be useful in determining the most efficient mode of action for the CWB.

The Effect of Operating and Financial Internationalization on Capital Structure: A Case of Taiwan Electronic Industry.

Tsai, Shen-wei 19 June 2008 (has links)
¡@The decision of company¡¦s capital structure should depend on each company¡¦s characteristic and environment for determining the proper debt level. Nowadays, in the global environment, corporation has been affected by the global variables. In addition to the involvement of international activity for corporation, the factor of global environment will also strike the corporation¡¦s characteristic and operating. ¡@This study uses the electronics industry as sample, and the sample period is from 2000 to 2006. This study will be divided into three parts. First, separate global activity into two dimensions: operating and finance, and to build respective measurement indicator of the internationalization. Second, discuss how these two dimensions influencing on the financial characteristic and capital structure for company. Finally, explore whether the international factors of exchange rate risk and political risk will affect the corporation capital structure. ¡@As a result, this study discovers three main conclusions. First, the international activity variables such as operating and financial characteristics actually exist in the electronics industry. Corporation can diversify the operating risk and reduce the cost of bankruptcy through the international activity of operating, however, that also restricts the investment opportunity and reduces the debt¡¦s agency cost at the same time. In addition, we find that the international level of operating will affect corporation¡¦s capital structure significantly. But if we control the variables of capital structure theory such as size, bankruptcy cost, debt¡¦s agency cost and the earning ability, it will become insignificant. However, the international level of finance always has significant and positive effect on corporation¡¦s capital structure no matter do we control the variables of capital structure theory or not. Third, as for the international environment factors, exchange rate risk is significant and positive factor for capital structure, conversely, political risk is significant and negative factor. Finally, this study exhibits that the decision of company¡¦s capital structure should consider the international environment for each company.

Řízení kurzového rizika v mezinárodním obchodě / Foreign exchange rate risk management in international trade

Buchta, Martin January 2009 (has links)
Diploma thesis is concerned with foreign exchange risk management in terms of international trade. It deals with types of foreign exchange rate risk (transaction exposure, economic exposure, translation exposure) and their influence on business activity. Diploma thesis also focuses on the possibility of future foreign exchange rate's prediction. The main part of the thesis is devoted to various methods of foreign exchange rate risk management. These methods are analysed under two main groups, internal methods and external methods. Under internal methods, following techniques are analysed: netting, matching, leading and lagging, currency diversification, choice of invoicing currency and pricing policy. External methods focus on the use of financial derivatives, specifically currency forwards, currency futures, currency option and currency swaps. Analysis of exchange rate risk management using financial derivatives is supported with illustrative examples.

Eficiência do mercado implícito de câmbio a termo no Brasil. / Efficiency of the implied forward exchange market in Brazil.

Garcia, Guilherme Maia 10 October 2003 (has links)
In this dissertation, the forward exchange market efficiency hypothesis is tested for the recent floating regime in Brazil. We use daily frequency data, with implied forward rates based on the swap market. The statistical approach is a semiparametric procedure which is statistically robust to data distributions with heavy tails and allows for non-stationarity of the data and overlapping observations (when the interval between observations is shorter than the futures maturity). The efficiency hypothesis is rejected when the robust procedure is used; still, a distinct procedure more sensible to the presence of outliers fails to reject the hypothesis. At last, we discuss some issues regarding the efficiency hypothesis, emphasizing the question of whether the rejection of the efficiency hypothesis denounces the presence of a risk premium, of market inefficiency or both. The results suggest the Brazilian forward exchange market is not efficient.

Exchange rate risk in Automobile Industry: An Empirical Study on Swedish, French and German Multinational Companies.

Barumwete, Lyna Alami, Rao, Feiyi January 2008 (has links)

Recently, both company executives as well as national media have claimed that short currency exchange rate fluctuations are negatively affecting the stock returns of certain firms. However, most previous studies focusing on companies in the US and Asia have been unable to find empirical support for a statistically significant linkage between firm value and exchange rate risk. By using a quantitative method with a deductive approach, the present research investigates if currency exchange rate movements impact the stock return of European based car companies with market interests in the US. By selecting French Renault and Peugeot, German Audi and BMW and Swedish Saab and Volvo, we were able to analyze three currencies exchange rates in our study: SEK/USD, SEK/Euro and Euro/USD. In addition, we included three macroeconomic factors: GDP, stock market index and Oil price to perform a multiple regression analysis. In consistency with the earlier studies, our results indicate that for five out of the six investigated companies, short movements in the three exchange rates do not significantly affect the stock returns of the companies investigated. By analyzing the annual report of the investigated companies, we found that derivatives instruments such as currency option, foreign exchange forwards, currency futures and currency swaps were used to hedge exchange risk. This might be one of the reasons why it was difficult to capture exchange rate risk. The fact that BMW was the only company showing a significant effect could indicate that the company is not applying the accurate hedging strategy. Another reason might be that the company is more exposed to exchange risk due to its large exporting activity compared to the other investigated companies.
