Harrisville; a New Hampshire mill town in the nineteenth century

Armstrong, John Borden January 1962 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University. / Harrisville is a small and attractive mill town in the highlands of southwestern New Hampshire, a town with a history quite different from those of its rural neighbors. Although its original settlement antedated the Revolution, Harrisville emerged as an entity only in the nineteenth century. It was incorporated in 1870, when it was carved out of the towns of Dublin and Nelson. Its numerous ponds and fast-flowing Goose Brook were vital elements in its growth. At the end of the eighteenth century, two small shops were built which carded wool and fulled woolen cloth with machines driven by water-power. As was typical in the development of the American woolen manufacture, these small enterprises led to the building of a complete woolen mill in 1823. Its owner was Bethuel Harris, whose father had come to Nelson after the Revolution. When Bethuel built his mill and moved his large family into a new home close by, the village began to grow in earnest. [TRUNCATED]

The social and economical world organization is being structured under the globalization paradigm, which has become more dynamic in the last decades. The raise in competitiveness has determined a manufacturing system reorganization, the main target of which is a constant evolution in goods quality, followed by the production cost reduction. In a scenario where big companies have several advantages over the smaller ones, some specialized micro and small industries concentration have achieved international success, due to a mutual cooperation system developed internally. A group of small factories specialized in knitting clothing production, located in Socorro - Sao Paulo state, makes the town one of the main production centers of this kind of goods. This study focus in understanding the historical evolution of the knitting clothing factories in Socorro, as well as analyzing the relationship among the elements inside the productive process. The main targets are concerned with appearance and development conditions of the local group of industries; the business strategies taken along with the political and economics changes in the last decades, either in international and national levels; the business community and staff profiles; and the situation of the house workers, a traditional sort of occupation characterized mostly by the low wages and precarious working conditions.
