This thesis deals with autobiographical reflections in selected novels of Jane Austen. The theoretical part looks into the social, historical, and cultural background in Jane Austen's lifetime. It also gives a general outline of literary genres in the late 18th and early 19th century. The practical part is focused on the analysis of various aspects in six Austen's books within the context of the available information about the writer's life. These novels are: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Transmediální vyprávění fikčního světa Star Wars / Transmedial storytelling of the Star Wars fictional worldVitoušová, Valérie January 2013 (has links)
In my thesis I focus on the problematics of the transmedia storytelling which can influence the original story, even if its main aim is to elaborate that story. Innterferencies can be done on the level of the very story or on the level of the theories,, which can be applicable on it. I'm using the example of Star Wars fictional world, to which theories of Vladimir Propp, Joseph Campbell, J.R.R. Tolkien can be applied, just as the concept of mythology created by Roland Barthes. I'm going to present how transmedia storytelling influences the original story, presented mainly by the film episodes and "G-canon", on the chosen examples of Star Wars transmedia. At the same time transmedia storytelling changes the meaning of the theoretical frames named above, which can be applied to the original story. My aim is to show that the impact of transmedia is much greater that it is usually presented.

Cartography of Mind: Cognitive Approaches to Fictional Consciousness and Fictional Worlds in Bioy's "The Invention of Morel"Tyler, Emily 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores representations of fictional consciousness (the fictional mind) in the novel The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Casares Bioy through the lens of cognitive approaches to literature. I first argue that the ways in which we interact with fictional minds is not unlike the way that we interact with real minds. Utilizing a cognitive hermeneutic means laying bare some of the cognitive frames and processes which are embedded into fictional worlds. I then argue that consciousness itself is narratively structured. Conscious experience is gappy and lies atop an enormous, largely unconscious realm of cognitive processing. This thesis seeks to uncover some of these processes as represented in the fictional mind, arguing that representations of fictional consciousness are composed of internal narratives (like mental events, wishes, desires, etc.) mirroring the narrative structure of real consciousness. Finally, I argue that representations of consciousness are embodied and can be read in tandem with the fictional world in which they are situated. The feedback loop between the fictional mind and its fictional environment, both physical and sociocultural, is the starting point for a powerful, interdisciplinary reading methodology. / Thesis / Master of English

Konstrukce postavy : postava ve fikčních světech a světech příběhu / Charakter construction : character within fictional worlds and storyworldsStaniševská, Aneta January 2015 (has links)
The thesis being presented aims to stress the differences between characters in fictional worlds and characters in storyworlds by means of question of possibilities and limits of reader's inferences. The aims of this thesis is to prove that storyworld construed as a mental model manages to avoid some problems that relate to fictional worlds theories. First chapter provides an insight into the issue of definitions and theories of character and places cognitive approaches to character within it. Since a concept of fictional world and a concept of storyworld are often construed as very alike, in the second chapter, there are two opposed opinions concerning reader's activity during a construction of fictional world; that is theories of Lubomír Doležel and Marie-Laure Ryan. By means of their mutual comparision, the distinctive status of fictional character concerning reader's inferences is being emphasized that further bears a decisive role within theory of Umberto Eco of which a core is presented in chapter three. The link between story comprehension and construction of fictional character is a centre of interest of chapter four, where cognitive approaches are represented by theories by Alan Palmer and David Herman. This chapter presents storyworld and character within it as open and fluid flexible....

The diploma thesis called Jára Cimrman as a transmedial phenomenon - canon and participation focuses on the fictional character of Jára Cimrman from several points of view. Jára Cimrman is briefly introduced in the thesis and the founding of Jára Cimrman Theatre (Divadlo Járy Cimrmana) and the founding of Cimrman Salon (Salón Cimrman) are also described. The information about a radio programme called Vinárna U Pavouka where the name of Jára Cimrman first appeared are also involved. Identifying the canon of Cimrman presents an important element of the first part of the thesis. The following chapters focus on mystification and fictional world. The practical part of the thesis then deals particularly with fan participation and other user-generated content. The thesis briefly introduces and then uses various media and literary theories. These are especially transmediality theory, fictional worlds theory and mystification. The associated aim of this thesis is to describe composing of Cimrman's fictional world based on the canon with the help of literary theories. The canon or rather a corpus of the chosen texts is subsequently compared to the excerpts (but not only excerpts) of fan participation and produsage. Proměny rolí a významů předmětu a materiálu ve výtvarné hře / Transformations of roles and significations of object and material in a visual gameHamplová, Kateřina January 2014 (has links)
Hamplová, K.; Transformations of roles and significations of object and material in a visual game. [Diploma thesis] Prague 2014 - Charles University, Faculty of education, 99 pages In my thesis I examine the process of transformation of roles and significations of object and material in visual games. I focus on the game as the experiment with characteristics of objects. I explore using objects and materials as the instruments for opening fictional worlds. A brief outline of the theories of perception of objects and their significations and theories of games and fictional worlds illustrates the base of the theme. Various views on the alterations of significations in creative process are illustrated with a selection of works of contemporary artists. In the didactic part I examine the characteristic position of the make-believe games in the development of a child and possible applications of those characteristics in art education. I also describe the design and realization of my didactic project dealing with this issue there. The applied part of my thesis is a natural extension and application of the thoughts delineated in the theoretic part. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Konflikt a prolínání kulturních znaků ve fikčním světě románů Louise Erdrich / Conflict and blending of cultural signs in fictional world of novels by Louise ErdrichPacolová, Jana January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to inspect the work of Louise Erdrich with the optics of semiotics, literary theory and cultural anthropology and to find topics related to the cultural conflict of Native American and Christian tradition. The theoretical part is devoted to the theories of the ontological definition of the fictional world, its relation to culture and its construction within a literary piece. In the practical part, we will deal with the cultural features associated with nature, religion, space and social ordering, as they are illustrated in the novels. The paper is not an anthropological material dealing with Native American culture as such. Here we perform a literary analysis and examine the anthropomorphic dimension of the unique fictional world.

Major Zeman: Verbální vyprávění a film / "Major Zeman": Comparative analysis of verbal narratives and TV serial presentationsKrausová, Martina January 2011 (has links)
The diploma thesis "Major Zeman": Comparative analysis of verbal narratives and TV serial presentations deals with two narrative media that depict the Zeman's story: a literary narrative by Jiří Procházka and its realization as TV series. Factors affecting the resulting form of both versions were identified by means of a gradual analysis of each of the versions. These factors were external interventions made by a management of a TV company and by its professional advisors as well as a mutual rivality of producers of the series. A focus to a TV audience and a literary ambition of Procházka, who attempted to step over the boundaries of a crimi genre, played their roles as well. These all resulted in two differently conceived fiction worlds. The narrative world, built on a myth-building principle, appears to be coherent, joined by an unifying ideological line. On the contrary, the TV series world appears to be scattered.

Part of the work will also be a comparison of the original text with the selected comic adaptation and noting the changes in the fictional world created by transferring it to the comic medium. The work will help teachers to understand the theory of comics. Theoretical knowledge will be applied in the creation of two teaching blocks built for the purposes of literary education at primary and secondary schools. The concrete implementation of both teaching blocks in practice will be compared.
