Characterizing non-fluent aphasia in English-based Caribbean creole languages: A case studyMcDonald, Ruth 11 1900 (has links)
Impairment caused by non-fluent aphasia often results in the omission and substitution of inflectional markers. Cross-linguistic work has revealed differential patterns of aphasic impairment across languages. This study aims to determine how non-fluent aphasia is manifested in English-based Caribbean creole languages, namely Jamaican Creole English (JCE) and Guyanese Creole (GC). The use of inflectional morphology is variable in English-based Caribbean creole languages. Therefore, in aphasic creole speech, it is difficult to ascertain the status of a grammatical omission as a valid creole feature or as a sign of impairment. I argue that Seymour’s et al. (1998) contrastive-noncontrastive schema can be useful for differentiating between normal and disordered creole features. The data in this study was obtained from a creole speaker with aphasic impairments. The data was later transcribed and analyzed. The results of this study appear to suggest that grammatical markers may form a hierarchy of susceptibility to aphasic impairment. Tense, agreement and aspectual markers along with auxiliaries and copulas appear to be more susceptible to impairment in disordered creole speech than plural markers, personal and demonstrative pronouns and articles. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Non-fluent aphasia is a language disorder caused by stroke and other types of severe brain trauma. This disorder can affect an individual's ability to produce grammatical words and suffixes in different ways depending on the language that they speak. This study seeks to determine how non-fluent aphasia affects English-based Caribbean creole languages, namely Jamaican Creole English (JCE) and Guyanese Creole (GC). L’étude présentée ici entre dans la problématique générale des arcs électriques intervenant dans des applications industrielles telles que le soudage, le découpage, le traitement des déchets. Ce travail constitue une première phase de modélisation de cette étude générale. Le plasma est décrit par un ensemble d'équations de conservation de fluide et de l’électromagnétisme, complétés par des propriétés thermodynamiques et des coefficients de transport appropriés, en formant un système d’équations non linéaires fortement couplées. Ces équations sont écrites en supposant l’équilibre thermodynamique local, une symétrie cylindrique et un écoulement laminaire stationnaire. Ce système d’équations est résolu à l’aide du logiciel commercial FLUENT de type CFD fondé sur l’approche des volumes finis. Pour pouvoir utiliser la partie solveur nous avons résolu notre modèle en utilisant les routines UDF Users-Defined-Function. Dans une première partie, nous présentons la validation du modèle à deux dimensions et à 100 A dans l’argon par des résultats de la littérature. Cette comparaison laisse apparaître un accord satisfaisant sur les profils de température dans la colonne de plasma et des différences dans les zones proches des électrodes dues aux conditions aux limites. Dans une deuxième partie, nous présentons une étude expérimentale, à l’issue de laquelle on constate que les profils de température expérimentaux sont en accord avec ceux du modèle dans la zone de colonne positive. / The study presented here enters the general problem of electric arc involved in industrial applications such as welding, cutting, waste treatment. This work constitutes the first numerical phase of modeling of this general study. The plasma is described by a set of fluid conservation equations, electromagnetic equations complemented by suitable thermodynamic and transport properties, forming a strongly coupled non-linear system. These equations are written assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium, a cylindrical symmetry and steady laminar flow. This system of equations is solved using commercial software FLUENT CFD-type based on finite volume algorithm. To use the solver part we solved our model using UDF macro Users-Defined-Function. In the first part, we present the validation of the two dimensional model in and 100 A in argon with the literature results. A detailed analysis of various characteristic quantities is presented. This comparison reveals a good agreement of the temperature profiles in the column plasma and differences in electrode areas due to boundary conditions. In a second part, we present an experimental study, the experimental temperature profiles are consistent with the model in the column area which means that the model is validated in the column of plasma.

O processo de flotação por ar dissolvido antecedendo a filtração, constitui hoje técnica já consolidada para clarificação de água para abastecimento. Apesar de apresentar elevada eficiência de remoção de partículas em suspensão e das diversas vantagens associadas a sua utilização, ainda existem particularidades deste processo pouco conhecidas. Visando compreender melhor a flotação por ar dissolvido e contribuir para a otimização das unidades existentes e também nos projetos de novas unidades, foram utilizadas técnicas de fluidodinâmica computacional para estudar as condições de escoamento entre água e ar observadas numa unidade piloto de flotação. A flotação foi investigada através de simulações em ambiente de CFD, acoplado a experimentos laboratoriais em instalação piloto de flotação por ar dissolvido. Estes últimos compreenderam a execução de ensaios com traçador para obtenção das curvas de distribuição de tempo de residência na unidade em questão e também por testes com sonda do tipo Micro ADV para levantamento do perfil de velocidades de escoamento no interior da unidade piloto. Os resultados das análises experimentais com sonda Micro ADV indicaram a presença de escoamento estratificado na região superior da zona de separação da unidade piloto. As curvas de distribuição do tempo de residência apontaram para escoamento do tipo pistonado. O tempo de detenção observado nos ensaios foi de 19,29 e 18,66 minutos respectivamente para escoamento somente de água e sem recirculação e escoamento entre água e ar. As simulações em CFD confirmaram a presença de escoamento estratificado na zona de separação e também a presença de uma manta de microbolhas de ar na mesma. Os resultados foram sensíveis ao diâmetro de microbolhas testado, com maior concentração de ar na zona de separação quando testados diâmetros de microbolhas menores que 60 µm. As curvas de distribuição de tempo de residência obtidas nas simulações em CFD foram capazes de representar o escoamento entre água e ar. O tempo de detenção hidráulico simulado foi de 14,24 e 18,90 minutos respectivamente para as mesmas condições experimentais testadas. De uma maneira geral, as simulações em CFD foram capazes de reproduzir as condições de escoamento entre ar e água observadas na unidade piloto de flotação, os resultados computacionais são condizentes com aqueles obtidos nos ensaios experimentais. / The dissolved air flotation process preceding filtration, consist in established technique for clarification of water supply. Despite presenting high suspended particle removal efficiency and the various advantages associated with their use, there are still a few particularities of this process slightly unknown. To better understand the dissolved air flotation and contribute to the optimization of the existing units and also in projects of new units, computational fluid dynamics techniques were used to study the flow conditions between water and air observed in a flotation pilot plant. The flotation process was investigated in CFD environment, coupled to laboratory experiments in dissolved air flotation scale pilot plant. The latter comprised running tests with tracer to obtain the residence time distribution curves in the pilot plant, tests with micro ADV probe were also conducted for raising the flow velocity profile within the unit. The results were sensitive to the diameter of microbubbles tested, with bigger air concentration in the separation zone when tested with microbubbles diameters smaller than 60 micrometers. The residence time distribution curves obtained in CFD simulations were able to represent the water and air flow. The simulated hydraulic retention times obtained were 14,24 and 18,90 minutes, respectively, for the same experimental conditions. In general, the CFD simulations were able to reproduce the flow conditions observed between air and water in the flotation pilot plant, the computational results were consistent to those obtained in the experiments.

The World Health Organization estimates that over two billion people did not have access to a toilet in 2017. The dejects produced often end up in bodies of water and, as one in every ten crops is watered with wastewater, this is estimated to cause half a billion deaths per year. There are currently many initiatives to reach this sanitation Global Goal, including those from people such as Bill Gates and projects such as The Solar Project. The Solar Project is based in South Africa and is based on cooperation between various companies which provides them with the different components for the installation of Resource Centers, that produce fertilizers of human waste. One of the components of these Resource centers are dry-toilets, which are provided by SUPERFUNKYFUTURE. This thesis is about an analysis of a toilet model and building a function tree, performing a 2D Volume of Fluid simulation on it to see even more critical geometries. Each one of those geometries had one alteration designed. These alterations were also combined into different models and they were all tested in both 2D and 3D simulations. The results from the simulations were then post-processed in CFD-Post and animated, to allow the qualitative analysis to be performed through a Pugh Matrix and decide between designs to recommend an improved internal geometry to SUPERFUNKYFUTURE. / Världshälsoorganisationen, WHO, beräknar att mer än två miljarder människor inte hade tillgång till toaletter 2017. Avföringen från dessa människor hamnade ofta i sjöar och floder och det vattnet användes sedan i sin tur för bevattning av grödor. Detta beräknas vara orsaken till en halv miljard dödsfall per år. Det finns för tillfället många initiativ att uppnå det globala målet för rent vatten och sanitet för alla, däribland arbetar Bill Gates och projekt så som “Solar Project”. “Solar Project” har sin bas i Sydafrika och är ett samarbete mellan flera företag som tillhandahåller olika komponenter som krävs för att skapa resurscenter, som kan användas för att producera gödsel av mänsklig avföring. En av komponenterna för dessa resurscenter är torrtoaletter som är försedda av SUPERFUNKYFUTURE. Denna tes handlar om att analysera en toalettmodell, bygga ett funktionsträd, utföra en 2D “Volume of Fluid”-simulering för att upptäcka kritiska geometrier. Varje sådan geometri fick en ändring designad. Dessa förändringar kombinerades till olika modeller som sedan blev testade med både 2D- och 3D-simuleringar. Resultaten från simuleringarna blev sedan bearbetade i CFD-Post och blev animerade, detta för att möjliggöra en kvalitativ analys genom en konceptviktningsmatris. Från Konceptviktningsmatrisen kunde man välja mellan designerna och rekommendera en förbättrad intern geometri till SUPERFUNKYFUTURE.

Modelling and simulation of two-phase closed thermosyphones using two-fluid methodKafeel, Khurram January 2014 (has links)
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become one of the main instruments for the prediction of many commercial and research oriented fluid flow and heat transfer problems. While single phase flow analysis through CFD has gained grounds within the commercial industry, multiphase flow analysis is still the subject of further research and development. Heat Pipes and thermosyphones are no exception to this. However, the involvement of more than one fluid phase within these devices has made their analysis through CFD more challenging and computationally more demanding to perform. In this thesis, computational fluid dynamics is used as a modelling tool in order to predict the thermal hydraulic behaviour of multiphase environment within thermosyphones and heat pipes. Eulerian two-fluid method is used to solve the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy, for each phase along with the inclusion of interfacial heat and mass transfer terms. Numerical predictions are obtained for the steady-state and transient operation of stationary thermosyphon, while rotating heat pipes operation is also simulated using axially and radially rotating heat pipe models. Apart from using the commercially available CFD code for the analysis of thermosyphones related simulation, numerical work is performed regarding the coupling of momentum equations based on Eulerian two-fluid modelling scheme. OPENFOAM open source code is used and modified to include the Partial Elimination Algorithm (PEA) for the coupling of interfacial exchange terms, including interfacial mass transfer term, in the momentum equations of both phases. Results obtained from above discussed studies provide good agreement with corresponding experimental and analytical observations.

I många mikrovågsugnar finns grillelement som kan färgsätta matens yta. Vissa kommande modeller av mikrovågsugnar planeras vara utan roterande tallrik och maten blir då stillastående. Därför måste grillelementen och tillhörande reflektorer optimeras så värmestrålningen om möjligt blir jämnt fördelad i ugnen. Syftet med examensarbetet är att undersöka hur värmestrålningen i ugnarna kan beräknas så optimeringar kan göras. Värmestrålningen i en befintlig mikrovågsugn har simulerats och mätts. Simuleringarna och mätningarna visar att värmestrålningens fördelning bör kunna beräknas med tillräcklig noggrannhet då quartzglasen som omger grillelementens värmetrådar försummas, reflektionerna ansätts som diffusa och ytorna ansätts som grå. Väggarnas emissionstal har troligen mindre betydelse för strålningsfördelningen, men påverkar den absoluta strålningen. / In many microwave ovens are grill elements, which give color to the food surface. Some future models of microwave ovens are designed with no turning table and the food will therefore be stationary. The grill elements and their reflectors must therefore be optimized so the heat radiation if possible will be evenly distributed in the oven. The purpose of this work is to examine how the heat radiation in the ovens can be calculated, thus the optimization can be carried out. The heat radiation in an existing microwave oven has been simulated and measured. The simulations and measurements show that the distribution of the heat radiation should be calculated with sufficient accuracy when the quartz glass that surrounds the filament of the grill element is neglected, reflections are assumed to be diffuse and the surfaces are assumed to be mathematically grey. Intervals of specified fluent verbal behavior of two stutterers received response-contingent positive stimulation in the form of an accumulating points system, Assessment was made o the effect of experimental manipulation on the frequency of fluent speech intervals as well as on the frequency of subject-identified stuttering behaviors observed during the experimental session. The results indicated significant change in fluent interval frequency in the spontaneous speech of one subject. Effect of the experimental contingency was not demonstrated in the oral reading of a second subject. Stuttering. behavior data indicated that an indirect effect of the positive stimulation can change the frequency of behavior not being contingently stimulated.

Simulation of Combustion and Thermal Flow inside an Industrial BoilerSaripalli, Raja 08 May 2004 (has links)
Industrial boilers that produce steam or electric power represent a large capital investment as well as a crucial facility for overall plant operations. In real applications, the operation of the superheater for producing high-pressure, high-temperature steam may result in problems frequently caused by ruptured superheater tubes. To make the boiler more efficient, less emission and less prone to tube rupture problems, it is important to understand the combustion and thermal flow behaviors inside the boiler. This study performs a detailed simulation of combustion and thermal flow behaviors inside an industrial boiler. The simulations are conducted using the commercial CFD package FLUENT. The 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and five species transport equations are solved with the eddy-breakup combustion model. Calculation of NOx is performed after obtaining a converged flow, thermal and combustion solution. The results provide insight into the detailed thermal-flow and combustion in the boiler and showing possible reasons for superheater rupture
