Playing modern : essaying, 1880-1920, Wilde, Chesterton, Woolf

Tippin, Robert Eric January 2019 (has links)
Between 1880 and 1920, both urban England and essays published in urban England underwent seismic shifts and splits, as population grew, education and technology advanced, and periodical publishing expanded. The city grew both larger in size and smaller in units of comprehensibility, and many of its people were (or were perceived by certain thinkers to be) less free and more instrumental. The periodical essay too grew more common and, at the same time, smaller in size, less free, and more instrumental, as it developed closer ties with journalism, with the industrial city, and with readers of all classes. By an examination of various forms of essaying in the period, this thesis argues that the essay's transitions parallel modernity's transitions, not only because the essay reflects or enacts or follows trends in modernity, but also because modernity at the time was conditioned by the essay's way of thinking through its form and cannot be fully understood without reference to the activities of the urban periodical essay at the time. The essay between 1880 and 1920 was a highly social genre, and this sociability manifested in a number of ways this thesis will explore. Its periodical context allowed it a ritual, patterning relationship with its readers; its brevity and limitations pushed it into dialectical, double-glancing modes of thought that complemented its fragmented setting; its tendency to direct attention away from its own form gave it a unique, constitutive role in literary modernisms; its material connections to new technologies implicated it in new doubts concerning urban modernity, and its massed readership embroiled it in fears over anti- or a-intellectual over-simplification. This thesis tells the stories of the periodical essay, in London, as an actor in modernity's transitions, by examining four concepts central to both the essay and to emergent modernity: play, the trick, doubt, and wisdom. These concepts are treated, primarily, through the work of three writers-Oscar Wilde, G. K. Chesterton, and Virginia Woolf-all of whom, in their styling of the essay, embody different moments and essayistic registers in the transitions of modernity and reveal the cross-fertilising relationship between essaying and what is meant by 'the modern'.

Encostas e favelas: deficiências, conflitos e potencialidades no espaço urbano da favela Nova Jaguaré / Slopes and slums: deficiencies, conflicts and potentialities of the urban space of the Nova Jaguaré \"favela\"

Luis Mauro Freire 14 December 2006 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the process of formation and production of urban space of the Nova Jaguaré favela. It tries to understand as informal occupation of territory , closely related to contour morphology, and institutional actions and proposals for the area have produced the studied urban space. It examines the resulting urban form, understanding it as the base of physical, economic and cultural realms of this population from which one must start for any intervention. Its deficiencies, conflicts and potentialities are addressed, indicating elements, relations and operations established by the slum population on the natural environment and built elements, that can subsidize future interventions in hillsides precarious settlements. The role of the public open space is defined, in its diverse scales, as the basic element to support the necessary transformations for the reconciliation of the favela with the natural environment and its integration with the city as a whole.

Paulo Camillo de Oliveira Penna 20 April 2017 (has links)
I present a body of artwork - build through drawing, photography and printmaking -that move an imagery of beings and places in transit between the perception, the memory and the dream. The form is proposed in its materiality and in correlation to its referents. The confrontation between technical and poetic matters is necessarily present in the making of each work and the movement among them. It is from the need for the invention of each piece of work that the understanding and the actions through the construction work. The study and experimentation with the media applied in the process are within the scope of this work. I propose that each manifestation is singled out and then cross analyzed, in time, with the other manifestations. This way each work permeates imagination and media. Imagining and figuring as feeling and action in itself and the world.

Pires, Ana Caroline de Toledo January 2016 (has links)
In the 70s, quality of life began to be considered a health outcome. With the growing importance of this assessment in different areas of medicine, there were no instruments developed in the cross-cultural perspective for international use. In this context, quality of life assessement outcome measures were developed by the WHOQOL group from WHO. With the need of shorter instruments which demanded less time to be filled in, the EUROHIS-QOL 8 ITEM was developed, originated from WHOQOL-BREF items. Objectives: Test the psychometric properties of EUROHIS-QOL 8-ITEM in a Brazilian sample. Methods: The sample consisted of 325 individuals. They were divided in to two groups, 151 subjects constituted the group of patients from the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre, RS, and 174 subjects the group of healthy controls. Some analyses were performed for the assessment of the psychometric properties of EUROHIS-QOL 8-ITEM index. Internal consistency was measured by using Cronbach’s alpha. Discriminant validity was assessed by comparing the group of patients and healthy controls and also the depressed and nondepressed. Analysis of convergent validity was through the correlation of EUROHIS-QOL 8-ITEM with different quality of life measures already validated and recognized as the SF-36 and WHOQO-BREF. Factor analysis was assessed using structural equation model (SEM). Unidimensionality was assessed using the properties of the Rasch model. Results: The Cronbach's alpha showed good internal consistency (with a value of 0.81). The measure also showed good discriminative ability between the groups of patients and healthy controls (mean1=3.32; SD1=0.70; mean2=3.77; SD2=0.63 t =6.12, p = 0,00) and between the depressed and nondepressed groups (mean3=3.14; SD3=0.69; mean4=3.72; SD4=0.61 t = 7.25 p =0.00). The instrument showed good convergent validity through significant correlations ( p < 0.001 ) between the EUROHIS–QOL 8-ITEM and all domains of WHOQOL-BREF (QV Overall r = 0.47; General Health r= 0.54; Physical Health r = 0.69; Psychological Health r = 0.62; Social Relationship r = 0.55; Meio Environment r = 0.55) and between EUROHIS-QOL 8-ITEM and the domains of the SF-36 (QV Overall r = 0.36; Functioning Physical r =0.49; Role Physical r = 0.45; Bodily Pain r = 0.43; General Health r = 0.52; Vitality r = 0.21; Social Functioning r = 0.45; Role Emotional r = 0.38 and Mental Health r = 0.17) , except for the social domain ( p = 0.38). In the Rasch analysis, general fit measures of the model had adequate statistical performance and were considered a good fit at the first assessment (residual fit Item-person Interaction: M = 0.01, SD = 1.51; person residual fit: M = -0.38, SD = 1.19 and Item-trait: Total Item X² = 69.60 p = 0.00. Personal Separation Index = 0.82), that is, the residuals were acceptable, it was not necessary to exclude items. The EUROHIS-QOL 8-ITEM showed a good fit to the data in the confirmatory factor analysis (X² = 18.46, DF = 15; CFI = 0.99; RMSEA = 0.03; GFI = 0.99; RMR = 0.03; P = 24). Conclusion: EUROHIS-QOL 8-ITEM, validated in European samples, showed adequate psychometric properties in this study showing to be a reliable quality of life measure to be used in Brazilian samples.

Roos, Renata Amélia January 2017 (has links)
The present thesis has as its theme the Absent Student Communication Form (FICAI). The objective is to indicate how it acts as technology, the articulations and conditions necessary for its emergence, some controversies present at the time of its implementation, as well as to inquire about the question of judicialization. In order to do so, multiple sources of data were used and different methodological procedures were undertaken. Interviews were conducted with representatives of the Education Department of Porto Alegre, the Public Ministry and the Porto Alegre Council of Education, that also provided explanations and materials for study. In addition to the interviews and consultation of official documents, research on the subject of school absence was carried out in the Zero Hora news archive and in the proceedings available on the website of the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul. Regarding the results, the study allowed to conceive of FICAI as a technology capable of forging the absent student as a product of multiple tensions in a heterogeneous field of forces that comprises a network of articulations of management interests (resources, mentalities and indicators). It becomes evident that FICAI operates as a technology in different management modulations and that it produces accumulation, belligerence, news, being constantly questioned by its non resolvability, suffering updates and new versions in order to become more effective. It is viable and durable, mainly by the Public Prosecution Service, which acts from its conception in sensitizing the actors involved, creating support networks, controlling the indicators, developing guidelines, mediating disputes, in a work that can be characterized as eminently extrajudicial. As for the judicialization, it can be identified that the lawsuits filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office have not been upheld in the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul.

3 : 6 SEC OF MOVEMENT

ROLL, FELIX January 2014 (has links)
How does one approach the human body when designing and use it as a tool for investigating to develop shape-expression in dress? For this research, the movement of the human body has been chosen as the base element to generate shapes from movement, to enable a form of visible objects. This has been accomplished by carefully studying the original movement of a human body through film. Looking att balance, direction and general shape. The new human body, which has been generated from this research, provides the viewer or creator a different perspective of the body in relation to the static body, which is regularly used in fashion design from the beginning of the design process. This research has been conducted to propose the importance of the human body as an active element in the beginning of the design process and to be viewed as a new platform of innovative design and artistic development in dress. In addition, to develop a contemporary understanding of the body’s role when designing and developing fashion design. By using the human body in motion for shape and form, in contrast to the regular static dummy/body or flat sketching, the collection challenges the standard methods of designing and applying techniques. / Program: Modedesignutbildningen

‘‘Push/pull’ …cloth directed”. Exploring possible draping techniques based on Madame Gres’ method to create shape and fo

MKHABELA, IRMGARD January 2014 (has links)
This study is concerned with the development of a method for creating shapes and form in clothing with minimum exertion on the cloth, using simple construction techniques. It is an exploration of an approach to producing clothing in a less familiar manner to the usual way of working which involves, almost always, drafting or flat-pattern making. With the expression of the movement of the textile around the body as the main aim, the ‘push/pull’ principle is employed to direct its flow in both a symmetric and asymmetric fashion. It is a principle inspired by Madame Gres, the French designer of the 1930s to 1980s, famous for her neo-classic inspired gowns. The textile, usually a rectangle, is manipulated without cutting into it but by pushing and pulling first, through the upper limbs of the body, and then ‘worked’ around the rest of the body, using draping and pleating to create shapes which are spontaneous, elaborate and not pre-determined. Furthermore, the approach explores the aesthetic potential of draping and combining the Filter 80 PPI, an industrial textile used for filtering, with conventional clothing materials, linen and/or cotton in this case. The parallels and constasts of this mix are noted, together with the distinct expressions, which nonetheless both display a simple approach in construction, minimal manipulation of the textile, the use of the upper limbs as natural obstacles, and the ‘no-cut’ principle of the rectangular piece of cloth. With free form construction and reflection, one discovers expressions possible only through the use of an experimental approach in working. / Program: Master Programme in Fashion and Textile Design

Research on payment forms of Chinese cross-border M&A

QIU, YANG January 2011 (has links)
Cross-border M & A had became a very important method of foreign direct investment for global multinational companies, and it is playing an increasingly important role to the growth of international production. Not only in developed countries but also in developing countries. For most of Chinese large-scale companies, Cross-border M&A had became a very attractive way to expend their business. Thus, Chinese cross-border M&A has developed rapidly. However, Different with the trend of global M&A market, the Chinese cross-border M&A prefer cash payment. Well then, How many payment forms are widely used in Chinese cross-border M&A? What are the determine factors of cash-payment preference in Chinese cross-border M&A? Does cash payment have the best operational performance in Chinese cross-border M&A? I will search answers for these three questions in this paper. In order to answer these three questions, first, I drew on the results of previous studies to classify the different available payment forms in Chinese cross-border M&A and detailed expound the characteristics and operate approaches of them. Then, Combined with my understanding of Chinese cross-border M&A, I summarized some possible factors which determined the preference in cash-payment for Chinese cross-border M&AAfter all of these done, I chose some important financial indexes as data in my empirical study to analyze the performance of different payment forms in applied of Chinese cross-border M&A. And tested if cash payment have the best operational performance in Chinese cross-border M&A.

Product Return Process : Developing a Web-Based Return Form to Improve the Information Flow between an Apparel Company and Its Retailers

Nilsson, Malin, Lantz, Louise January 2012 (has links)
Handling product returns has become a critical activity for organizations as the volume of gods flowing back through the supply chain rapidly increases. Few research studies have published specific empirical data concerning the reverse logistics practices of companies. Information technology and information support has long been recognized as a competitive weapon – capable of enhancing company performance and achieving efficient reverse logistics. Reverse logistics is very unlike the forward, as it is more reactive and also has less visibility. Unlike forward logistics, incoming products from reverse logistics are not tracked broadly because of the lack of information systems resources necessary. The investigated apparel company in this study is operating on the global market and expands their sales twenty per cent each year, resulting in increased pressure in the return flow. To meet this future demands, the return process has to be more efficient and not so time consuming. This study emerged from a case study made at the return department of this apparel company based on a research question. An improvement area was discovered through interviews, internal documents and observations. This area was investigated in existing theories through books and scientific research papers. From the theories and the case study, a hypothesis was created in order to be tested. To strengthen the hypothesis, an experiment was developed and performed at selected retailers and at the apparel company.Research Question Where in the product return process can improvements be made in order to make the information flow more efficient between retailers and an apparel company?HypothesisBy creating a web-based return form, the information flow between retailers and an apparel company will be more efficient, resulting in a more effective and structured product return process.Through the experiment, various factors that strengthen the hypothesis were discovered. For instance, the information flow becomes more effective when retailers have clear guidelines how to send back products and when inserting the information into the computer system before returning. As the apparel company knows what is coming back, the disposition of returned products can be predetermined which will speed up the return process. Shared and available information across various parties facilitate the daily work with better communication. Furthermore, activities that are existing today within the return process can be eliminated which result in more effective product return process. Refund for retailers can be made quicker which result in more satisfied retailers and creates stronger relationships. / Program: Master programme in Applied Textile Management
