Frances has recently survived a near-fatal car accident, and a period of convalescence in which she was cared for by her eccentric mother. Now, with the help of her friend, Jane, she’s landed a job at an AIDS Service Organization where she has the opportunity to slowly come back to life.
Touching on themes of female friendship, marriage, and intimacy through technology, and with undertones of capitalism, racism, and patriarchy, We Are Not Supposed to Be Happy is a love story in every direction.

Polisers vänskapsrelationer : En studie om hur polisers vänskapsrelationer skapas, bibehålls & förändras / Police friendship : A study about how police friendship is created, sustained & changeFransson, Oscar January 2021 (has links)
The Swedish police force is characterized by long working hours, shift work and hardworking conditions. This affects the men and women working within the force both mentally and physically. The aim of this study is to see how police officer’s wok life affect their private friendships. I have chosen to use qualitative method in my research to get a deeper understanding on what affects friendships to create, sustain and change when one of the friends is a police officer. I used the snowball effect to help me with this task and interviewed a total of six respondents. To help me analyse the interviews I used three theories them being, Relationships theory, role theory and vocational socialization. With their help I could pick out patterns in the transcribed material that could help me understand better why police officer’s friendship were created, sustained and changed and sometimes even broken. One of the things that I found interesting was that the respondents quickly sorted their friendships between close friends and acquaintances this took me by surprise since I hade been focusing on the definition friendship it had not dawned on me to bring acquaintances to the table. However, I found that all the respondents had only made new friends within the police force or during the police training. The respondents were verry reserved people that did not like to tell people that they were police officers. An other thing that stood out to me was that some of the respondents were more prone to take the time to be with their old friends then others and that some had been more attached to the people that they worked with witch meant that the old friends were not that interesting any more compared to the new friends.

Connecting Self Enhancement And Self Verification Messages In FriendshipsBloch, Ann 01 January 2009 (has links)
This study investigates the connection between self-enhancement and self-verification and confirmation and emotional support. The hypotheses predicted that there is a positive relationship between confirmation and self-enhancement and self-verification; people feel good about themselves when confirmed by friends, people feel that friends know them well when they are confirmed. The hypotheses also predicted that there would be a positive relationship between emotional support and self-enhancement and self-verification; people feel good when friends provide emotional support, and people feel that friends know them well when provided emotional support. A research question was also posed: Does family functioning have an effect on perceptions of self-enhancement and self-verification messages? To find the answers, a questionnaire was completed by 279 individuals. The results indicate two types of enhancement messages; a more specific and positive form of enhancement and more global (and negative) self perception of rejection. The findings are interesting and unique to self-enhancement in communication research which provides many avenues for continued research. Results also suggest that different elements of confirming communication influences perceptions of enhancement in different ways, emotional support predicts verification.
