Heterosexual social communication involving children of middle childhood years

Gerken, Shirley Humphries January 1973 (has links)
The present study investigated heterosexual social communication between boys and girls seven through ten years of age using a series of cartoon pictures to elicit responses during individual interviews. The sample consisted of 160 public school children enrolled at Margaret Beeks Elementary School, Blacksburg, Virginia. Chi-Square analysis revealed significant differences in overall response patterns for each of the four pictures (p < .01). Positive responses coded as romantic, social or circumstance were chosen more often than hostile responses. A significant interaction effect of Response x Sex x Age was observed for Figure 1, boy and girl sitting side by side. Older boys gave more romantic responses, while older girls gave markedly fewer romantic responses and chose responses of a social nature instead. Responses observed for Figure 3, boy running after a girl, resulted in significant Response x Sex interaction. Girls chose a romantic response more often than social, circumstance or hostile responses, while boys chose circumstance responses. There was no significant effect due to presence/absence of opposite siblings. Results were discussed in relation to previous findings and recommendations for further study were suggested. / Master of Science

Dietary intakes of twenty-six preadolescent girls

Gee, Frances Walmsley January 1958 (has links)
The purpose of this experiment was to study the self-selected dietary intakes and some of the food practices of twenty-six preadolescent girls as determined from two-week dietary records and to compare the calculated self-selected intakes with Recommended Dietary Allowances of the National Research Council. Subjects between the ages of seven and nine years and in the height-weight range considered normal for this sex-age group were chosen. After different methods of dietary survey were considered the two-week record of food intake was used. Forms and instructions for recording data were given to the mothers and they recorded foods consumed by the subjects in household measurements. Nutrient intakes for each subject were calculated using United States Department of Agriculture Handbook Number 8. The mean dietary intakes for all subjects were equal to or above allowances of the National Research Council. The seven year old group had higher nutrient intakes than the eight or nine year old groups. Food habits were studied. The consumption of about a quart of milk per day per subject and the practice of eating substantial breakfasts were practices to which credit was due for above average rating in nutrient intake. Since girls in this study were to be subjects in a metabolism balance study to follow, it was imperative that their typical food intakes be at least equal to and compare favorably with the average for this age group. Their dietary histories and their physical examinations proved them to be entirely acceptable. / Master of Science

Berry curvature in nonlinear systems / 非線性系統的貝里曲率 / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Berry curvature in nonlinear systems / Fei xian xing xi tong de Beili qu lu

January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, the critical phenomenon in Berry curvature of nonlinear systems that occurs at phase boundaries is described by using the Bogoliubov excitation of the semiquantal dynamics. Its is shown that when the critical boundary in the parameter space is crossed, the nonlinear geometric phase of the Bogloubov excitations surrounding the elliptic fixed points experiences non-analytic behavior. / Thesis M.Phil. Hydrodynamic modeling of towed buoyant submarine antenna's [sic] in multidirectional seas

Geiger, Sam R. (Sam Rayburn), 1971- January 2000 (has links)
Thesis (S.M.)--Joint Program in Oceanographic Engineering (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Ocean Engineering, and the and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), 2000. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 100-101). / A finite difference computer model is developed to simulate the exposure statistics of a radio frequency buoyant antenna as it is towed in a three-dimensional random seaway. The model allows the user to prescribe antenna properties (length, diameter, density, etc.), sea conditions (significant wave height, development of sea), tow angle, and tow speed. The model then simulates the antenna-sea interaction for the desired duration to collect statistics relating to antenna performance. The model provides design engineers with a tool to predict antenna performance trends, and to conduct design tradeoff studies. The floating antenna envisioned is for use by a submarine operating at modest speed and depth. / by Sam R. Geiger. / S.M.
