Some factors affecting the winter range of Jasper National Park

Pfeiffer, Egbert Wheeler January 1948 (has links)
Recent studies by Dr. I. McT. Cowan in Jasper National Park have revealed that many of the winter game ranges of the Park are heavily over-utilized by grazing and browsing animals. In order to correct this situation, it was first necessary to obtain accurate information on existing range conditions. Therefore, study of certain key areas of the Athabaska Valley was undertaken in the summer of 1946 and 1947 by Dr, Cowan and the author, for the purpose of describing existing plant growth, investigating factors affecting this plant growth, and recommending measures for improving range conditions. In carrying out the project, standard range survey methods were used on nine representative areas. Point sampling revealed the composition of the ground vegetation while cover estimates and numerical counts gave the status of trees and shrubs. Analyses of soil samples indicated the fertility of the soil of the various ranges. The relative utilization of the ranges by herbivores was estimated by defecation counts. In order to determine the productivity of the ranges equal amounts of ground vegetation were clipped, air-dried, and weighed. Exclosure plots, established in 1942, served as a type of control as productivity within the plots was compared to that outside. The Jasper cemetery was used as a relict area. As a result of the investigations it was concluded that the winter ranges of the Athabaska Valley vary greatly in their capacity to produce vegetation, and that all the ranges are over-utilized to a greater or lesser degree, principally by elk and horses. This over-utilization is producing a retrogressive succession of the ground vegetation which is rendering the ranges increasingly unproductive. Destruction of browse species and strict fire protection are hastening development of climax spruce forests on certain range areas. In order to correct present trends in the ecology of the Athabaska Valley it was recommended that the numbers of elk be greatly reduced, that annual censuses of game populations be made, that a cover map of the area be prepared and new exclosure plots set up, that periodic range studies be made, that horse grazing be prohibited, and that conifers be controlled on certain game ranges. / Science, Faculty of / Zoology, Department of / Graduate

Právní úprava myslivosti / Legal regulation of hunting management

Krejčová, Kristína January 2015 (has links)
in English The present Master's thesis deals with the hunting legislation in the Czech Republic. The thesis is divided into 4 chapters, some of which are further subdivided into subchapters. The first chapter contemplates the history of hunting. The second chapter provides a detailed overview of the sources of the hunting legislation. The analysis covers the sources of the Czech legislation, the European legislation and international treaties. The third chapter is the key chapter of the thesis. It encompasses a detailed analysis of the applicable Czech hunting law. The fourth and last chapter contains the hunting legislation of the Slovak Republic. A part of this chapter is a comparative analysis of the Czech and Slovak hunting legislation. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse in detail the current hunting legislation, to emphasise the major deficiencies and to propose appropriate solutions.

The history and development of wildlife conservation in Virginia: a critical review

Reeves, John Henry January 1960 (has links)
For a number of years Virginia wildlfe biologists have thought that a critical review of past and game conditions in Virginia would serve as an excellent background tor planning future game management activities in the state. No study such as this has been attempted in Virginia; however, other states (e.g., Vermont and New Hampshire, have compiled historical summaries of past wildlife conditions within their borders. Generally these works have been limited to the compilation of historical facts; no ideas for future management plans were rpoposed. No historical summary and critical review based on such a summary has been undertaken so fas as is known. In order to collect the most pertinent information on the history of Virginia's wildlife... / Ph. D.

Identifikace faktorů ovlivňujících vysoký úhyn zvěře na silnicích / Identification of factors influencing large measure of road-kill of game.

MACHAČ, Radek January 2010 (has links)
The bachelor´s thesis monitors an effect of motor traffic on selected species of game. The aim of this work was to review knowledge about protection of animals on surface communications and to survey and evaluate numbers of game killed on area of interest by motor traffic. Monitoring had been provided near České Budějovice in the southern Bohemia from August 2009 to October 2009. Killed individuals were documented by members of local hunting association, and on the basis of my own observations. The most frequently killed game species were brown hare and roe deer, from the other animal species common mole and both eastern and western hedgehog. But a lot of animals might not been found, so the results can be misinterpreted. The proposal of precaution which should improve the situation is an important part of the thesis.

Právní úprava myslivosti / Legal regulation of hunting management

Čech, Jan January 2021 (has links)
75 Abstract This diploma thesis deals with Legal Adjustment of Gamekeeping. Gamekeeping is perceived not only as a hobby, but it is a phenomenon which became a lifestyle of many people. The main purpose of hunting is to protect and maintain freely living game for the future generations but at the same time ensure the environment protection. According to the importance of the environment protection and the game there is no doubt, that this issue requires its own legal adjustment. The adjustment has evolved over years and these days it is influenced by the globalization, membership in multinational communities and organizations and many others. In the introduction the term Gamekeeping is presented together with the reasons which make this topic current. In the first chapter the history of hunting is analysed heading towards the development of gamekeeping including the role of poaching during over the years. The second chapter is an important part of the thesis, it processes sources of the gamekeeping legislation. The international legislation related to many international contracts focused on component aspects of the environment protection is mentioned first. It is also necessary to deal with the legislation of the European Union, of which the Czech Republic is a member, in which the legislation is included...

Zákon o myslivosti jako prostředek ochrany životního prostředí / Hunting law as a tool for environmental protection

Sehnalová, Jana January 2021 (has links)
Hunting law as a tool for environmental protection In the scope of three main chapters, introduction and conclusion, the thesis attempts to capture the relationship between the Czech hunting legislation and nature conservation. The question is whether we can consider the current concept of the Hunting Act (449/2001 Sb.) as one of the tools of environmental protection. For the elaboration I based the research, among other things, on my personal experience with pro-landscape hunting in the vicinity of the village Vinaře, Central Bohemia. Furthermore, I elaborated on interesting cases of judicial and administrative practice and, last but not least, I took into account the relevant legal norms and appropriate literature or professional texts. The first chapter deals in more detail with the very concept of hunting, including various interpretations and therefore also meanings. The second part of the first chapter describes - rather briefly - the history of hunting predominantly in the Czech territory. In this context, greater emphasis is placed primarily on the first signs of nature protection. The next chapter follows the very essence of the monography, namely the role of hunting in environmental protection. I pay special attention to the hunting ground and game in this regard. One of the separate...

Game conservation for the high school boy and girl

West, Akers Martin January 1941 (has links)
For several years teachers in the public schools have attempted to teach game conservation, but have been confronted with the problem of having available sufficient information on the subject. They have found an abundance of material which has been written in the field, but very little of it has been written in the language of the youth or the layman. This condition has seriously handicapped both teacher and pupil, resulting in fewer units being taught in the field of game conservation. It has been the intention of the author to prepare a volume that would meet the requirements of the high school boy and girl in supplying subject matter material in the field of game conservation. The thesis is divided into three parts, namely: (1) The interdependence of Living Things: (2) Practical Game Management; and (3) Natural and Life Histories of Game Species found in Virginia. The intention of Part I is to attempt to make the pupil realize the necessity and importance of conserving the natural resources, and to show how one form of life is dependent upon other forms. They must realize the necessity of man conforming to the plan of interdependence as set up by nature. Conservation of any of our natural resources must be by this plan or it is doomed. Much has been written on the subject of game management, but relatively little has been organized for use by the general public. It has been written for the technical experts and not in a language understandable by the average person. It has, therefore, been the intention of the author to take the most practical and usable information from the many sources and translate it into material for the average person. Suggested pupil activities were listed in most of the chapters of Part II. Two activities were analyzed in the chapter “Taking a Census of Game Populations” to give the teacher a guide to go by in developing other activities. It was the opinion, not only of the author, but of many consultants, that the content should not be procedure but should be confined mainly to subject matter. From this could evolve unit plans or job analysis suitable to the group with whom the teacher is working. Part III deals with a relatively complete and concise natural and life history description of game species found in Virginia. It will be found that much additional information may be procured from various sources for specific groups or species. The author has attempted to compile, sort, and simplify the material so that it may be in a readable form for the average practical conservationist. / Master of Science

A modelling approach to elephant and tree population dynamics for a small game farm

Stretch, Anne-Marie January 2005 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology: Information Technology, Durban Institute of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2005. / Throughout Africa, growing human populations and resulting loss of wildlife habitat is a critical issue for most animal species. It is more and more common for privately owned small or medium sized farms to reintroduce wildlife on their land and such protected areas are fast becoming the only refuges available to wild animals. However a comprehensive understanding of the complex ecological processes taking place is vital for the effective management of restricted areas and the conservation of biodiversity. Due to the enormous complexity of an ecological system and the long periods of the related dynamics, it is very difficult to analyse the interaction between animals and plant populations without suitable computer models. In this thesis, the dynamics between elephant and trees (a major food source) are considered using computer simulations. / M
