Coercive agrarian work in South Africa, 1948 - 1965 : 'farm labour scandals'?Muller, Cornelis Hermanus 09 December 2011 (has links)
This dissertation puts into historical context allegations of farm labour abuse during the period 1948 to 1960 on the eastern Transvaal Highveld. It not only gives an exposition of these events, but importantly analyses these allegations of abuse in the context of the South African government’s intervention into farm labour for this period. The dissertation, however, first gives an overview of the government’s policies of regulating and providing farmers with black labour in the period 1910 to 1948. It deals specifically with the dubious measures introduced and coercive actions taken by the National Party government after 1948 to provide farmers with “cheap and plentiful labour”. The reactions to the accusations of abuse by the South African government, the farmers, the conservative, liberal and leftist press, and other independent bodies, such as the churches, Black Sash and the South African Institute of Race Relations, are also explored. The reaction of the African National Congress and the Potato Boycott launched in 1959 by this organisation in response to the mistreatment of farm labourers, also receives specific attention. It concludes with a discussion of how the farm labour scandals and the reaction during the 1950s and more specifically the Potato Boycott of 1959 are still relevant today by considering the contested nature of the commemoration of this event in 2009 AFRIKAANS : Hierdie verhandeling plaas bewerings van die misbruik van plaasarbeid gedurende die periode 1948 tot 1960 op die oostelike Transvaalse Hoëveld in historiese konteks. / Dissertation (MHCS)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Historical and Heritage Studies / unrestricted

Computer games have not only invaded the lives of children, but the lives of adults as well. Increasingly, computer games have become a part of popular culture. Initially computer games were considered to be a waste of time, time that could have been better spent doing more worthwhile activities such as studying and physical exercise. Recently, however, attitudes towards computer games have changed; teachers, parents and researchers have started to regard computer games as a possible educational resource. During this new information age it is possible that the children who are part of the Net generation have started to think and process information differently, and that they may have different educational needs. Some researchers think that computer games may serve as an educational tool to support their learning. This literature survey provides an overview of current literature on computer games and education. The review examines the aspects of computer games that support learning, such as motivational factors, social interaction and learning through doing. Further, the review studies the negative aspects that prevent games from being accepted as an educational tool such as the violence portrayed, game addiction, negative stereotyping and asocial behaviour. The Net generation is also examined. The review looks at their characteristics, thinking patterns, skills and their expectations of education. The review then serves as a basis to provide some guidelines for the selection and usage of computer games in the classroom. / Dissertation (MEd (Computer-Integrated Education))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / unrestricted

ENGLISH : The dissertation begins with a brief review of the nature and status of local history in Western and South African historiography. The geographic location of Machadodorp as well as physical factors, such as geology and climate, determined early settlement patterns. From archaeological research in the area it was determined that the earliest inhabitants of the greater Machadodorp area were Stone Age people, Iron Age people and black communities, such as the Koni, Pedi and Swazi. During the last half of the nineteenth century the first whites settled in the region of Machadodorp. To retain their political and economic independence the ZAR had to obtain a non- British route to the outside world. This idea could only be realized if a railway line, the Oosterlijn, was built to the Portuguese harbour of Delgoa Bay. There is a very close link between the surveying, planning, building and development of this railway line and the history of the establishment of Machadodorp. Initially, the two settlements, Machadodorp and Carolina were part of the Lydenburg magisterial district. When Carolina was proclaimed an independent magisterial district in 1893, the ZAR government had to make a decision regarding the district to which Machadodorp would belong. The eventual decision that Machadodorp should remain part of the Lydenburg magisterial district resulted in long term administrative consequences for the Machadodorp area. The Anglo Boer War was the most influential event in the history of Machadodorp prior to 1904. After Pretoria, the capital of the ZAR was occupied by the British forces Machadodorp became the temporary seat of the ZAR government (5 June 1900 – 27 August 1900). On 28 August 1900 the town was occupied by the British troops and on 1 September 1900 Lord Roberts, Commander-in-chief of the British troops in Southern Africa, proclaimed the Transvaal as part of the British Empire. The British troops remained in Machadodorp until after the peace negotiations in 1902. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the process by which Machadodorp was proclaimed a town. This process which started before the outbreak of the war was disrupted by the war and was only completed after the war. On 30 December 1904 Machadodorp was proclaimed a town, whereby the first phase in Machadodorp’s developmental history was concluded. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Historical and Heritage Studies / unrestricted

Thesis (DD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

A contextual history of South African ceramics of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries / Kontekstuele geskiedenis van Suid-Afrikaanse keramiekkuns van die twintigste en een-en-twintigste eeu / Isizinda somlando weseramiki kwikhulu leminyaka lamashumi amabili kanye namashumi amabili nanye eNingizimu AfrikaWatt, Ronald 08 1900 (has links)
Text in English with summaries and keywords in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / Presented in two volumes. Volume 2 contains colour photographs / Bibliography: (volume 1: leaves 181-219) / The history of South African ceramics of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
tends to be presented in a compartmentalised manner in that it focuses on the
leading exponents within genres and is limited to an investigation of the contexts
that have an immediate bearing on their oeuvres. The result is a fragmented (and
sometimes biased) view of the role players, circumstances, influences and
incentives that have come to define South African ceramics.
The thesis introduces key contributors who have hitherto been considered in
relation to crafts and fine art but whose work with ceramic materials places them
firmly within the ambit of South African ceramics. It also positions and evaluates
the roles of the formal and informal twentieth-century educational and training
agencies that, within the constraints of imposed political dogma, produced
ceramists who successfully challenged staid Western aesthetics. Particular
attention is given to how the black “traditional potters” exercised agency in
negotiating a contemporary (as opposed to an ethnographic) presence in which
they referenced the forms, meanings and values of “traditional pottery” to meet
the expectations of the collector’s market.
The thesis posits that the ceramists’ quest to claim an identity (or an
“indigeneity”) in the turbulent political era of the later twentieth century has
parallels with the intent and outcomes of African Modernism. African
Modernism, which arose in postcolonial countries, sought to challenge Western
binaries of art, craft, identity and presence and typically made use of hybridity to
that end. The same presence of hybridity is evident in twentieth-century South
African ceramics, which must be read as an engagement with a multi-cultural
society within which the ceramists sought to position themselves. The thesis
illustrates the progression of hybrid features from an initially crude and superficial
referencing of indigenous and African material culture to subjective translations
of that culture that are presented in innovative approaches. This theme is further
explored in relation to South African ceramics of the twenty-first century, and
evidence suggests that some of the ceramists’ oeuvres can now be considered
transcultural and even transnational.
The thesis, which is by its nature an enquiry that presents new or reassessed
evidence is neither a fully inclusive nor an absolutist revision of the history of
ceramics.
Umlando weseramiki yaseNingizimu Afrika kwikhulu leminyaka lamashumi
