Subsurface analysis of Sundaland basins : source rocks, structural trends and the distribution of oil fields

Pethe, Swardhuni 14 December 2013 (has links)
According to the Ade observation (Ade, W., pers. Comm.) “95% of all commercial oil fields in the Sumatra region occur within 17 km of seismically mappable structural grabens in the producing basins”. The Ade observation proposes a link between the subsidence of the source rocks (the Talang Akar Formation) in the grabens and the maturity of the organic material. To test the validity of the Ade observation, subsurface mapping of the region was carried out using geophysical logs. Using the well log information, the basement and the formation tops have been mapped with a special emphasis on Talang Akar and Air Benakat Formations. The isopach maps of these formations show that most of the producing wells on the Sunda shelf are in fact located in and around the major structural basins. Trends in the occurrence of the oil fields have also been observed which are analogous to the orientation of the grabens. Structural mapping of the basins have identified several wrench faults. These are of particular interest as wrench faults provide good structural traps for oil in the Los Angeles and the North Sumatra Basins and may prove to be very important for future exploration in southern Sumatra and northwest Java. In South Sumatra Basin, 77.78% of the potential oil fields are located in the 17 km margin from the grabens. For Sunda/Asri Basins and the Ardjuna Basin, it is 100 and 92 respectively. Identifying the source rocks in this 17 km window will enhance the success rate of oil exploration in the Sundaland Basins. / Department of Geological Sciences

O outro graben, localizado a oeste do principal, tamb?m acomoda a Forma??o Motuca e possui a mesma orienta??o. / The west border of the Parna?ba Basin displays an outstanding N-S photolineaments pattern. The N-S orientation differs from the oval basin. This N-S pattern corresponds to a graben system, previously identified in CPRM geologic maps, including an eastern main graben inside the basin as well as a western structure isolated in the crystalline basement. Along the borders of the main graben, outcrops of young units (f.e. Motuca and Samba?da formations) are in contact with older units through normal and normal-oblique faults, with omission of stratigraphic sections. Inside of the basin, further south (Palmas and Miracema do Tocantins region), the Serra Grande Group, the Pimenteiras Formation and the crystalline basement appear side-by-side uplifted through normal faults. The other graben, in west of the main graben, also accommodates the Motuca Formation and have the same orientation the main graben. The analysis of SRTM images allowed mapping the photolineaments and the graben borders, beyond cutting relationships present in different photolineaments directions. Starting with geometry and kinematic of structures and the orbital image data, could be suggested three deformational events, D1, D2 e D3. The deformational event D1, it is the pioneer of grabens and responsible for your genesis and structuration, the N-S faults orientation of this event involves a 20? to 30? variation to E or W, which is controlled by basement anisotropies along this basin edge, related to the Araguaia Belt. The deformational event D2, is recognized mainly in north region of main graben, where EW/ENE photolineaments control the eojurassic basalts occurrence Suite Mosquito and intersects the structures of previous event. And the deformational event D3 show normal faults NE direction and strike-slip faults dextral and sinistral. Normal and normal sinistral faults, dominate the graben structuration and control your opening with NE distension. The minimum age for this is estimated in the Permo-Triassic interval, based on structural relations and the mentioned stratigraphic units. The E-W eojurassic distension structures of D2 on Suite Mosquito, and normal faults or strike-slip showing NW distension, are much young and tentatively correlated to the event of Atlantic Central and South opening, respectively.

Quaternary faulting in Salt Basin graben, West Texas

Goetz, Lisa Karen 27 June 2011 (has links)
Fault scarps cutting alluvial deposits define the present-day eastern boundary of Basin and Range faulting in Trans-Pecos Texas. These faults are found in the Salt Basin graben north of Van Horn, Texas, and its southerly extensions along Lobo Valley and Michigan Draw. Discontinuous and en echelon Quaternary fault scarps quickly die out to the south on the eastern side of the graben but become more continuous and develop larger displacements (up to 6 meters) along the west side of Salt Basin at the base of Sierra Diablo. The orientation of the more than one hundred Quaternary down-to-the-basin fault scarps and photolineaments appears to be controlled by pre-existing structural zones of weakness. The preferential alignment of Quaternary (Holocene?) fault scarps along the western side of the graben, the westward shifting of playa lakes and the preferred orientation of giant desiccation polygons show that the graben floor is subsiding more rapidly along the western margin. These faults also separate fresh from saline ground water. Four transverse structural lineaments crossing the northern portion of Salt Basin graben were mapped by P.B. King (1948, 1965) and M. Wiley (1970). A fifth zone, trending east-west between the Babb flexure and Bitterwell Mountain is proposed in this thesis. A tectonic origin is suggested by the orientation of the scarps and the proximity of the Mayfield fault scarps to the estimated epicenters of the 1931 Valentine earthquake. The frequency of small earth tremors felt by the residents of the basin and recorded by temporary seismograph stations indicate tectonic adjustments are presently occurring. / text
