Previous issue date: 2014-07-07 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo / From the existential conflict between I vs False ego, as enunciated by ancient mythology, this work investigates the interpretation s possibility of this duality nowadays. This way it is examined on these two temporal contexts the conflict between the man element, or even his soul, often designed as I, and his false ego, or false perception of himself. It starts with the analysis of an antiquity s literary source whose narrative explicitly shows this topic, the Bhagavad-Gita, and sequentially it is taken as object a mediatic verbal-visual-spatial text of the present time, the graphic novel Ramayan 3392 AD. By exploring this question on the first text it is aimed to identify it in the graphic novel, therefore examining the theme s continuity, which according to this point of view is originated in antiquity and kept in nowadays media. Thus it is looked forward to prove this interpretation s possibility in mediatic texts, to prove how this opposition can be considered a connection between different mythologies; and to analyze how the duality is structured at the present times, through comic books research. As important points are considered the changes that occur in the value of sacred, whose investment is existent in the ancient mythology connected to religiosity, but not in comic books generality, not explicitly at least. As theoretical basis to this problematic s analysis on the study corpus, it is used the referential of Greimas discursive semiotics and its development on Landowski s socio-semiotics, while for observations regarding mythologies, beyond these semioticists works and others , it is mainly taken this question s approach by Cassirer. It can be pointed that there is dissolution of the value of sacred, represented in ancient mythology by emphasis and detailing of the mystical and religious theme, while the subject hero s characterization by a duty is kept, in a way that the mystical religious value becomes an ethical value in the nowadays text, being kept in both texts the modalization by should as invariable. Furthermore, mediatic texts bring a differentiated appeal to sensible experience, through plastic components, which alongside with the verbal plane add another meaning s dimension to the narrative; a meaning that is also considered from the ancient text s prescription concerning the existential conflict examined, leading to the formation of a chromatic schematization connected to this opposition. As conclusions it is obtained a possible interpretation of the euphoric subjects as attached to cognitive instances, and of the dysphoric subject as associated to the somatic actancial instance precisely, in an assemblage constitutive of a single macro-subject. From myth to media rises the main change which is the passage from the direct holy s revelation to the detachment of aesthesic sensibility as key piece on the subject s formation. This mechanism allows the sensibility s perception as responsible for making feel the new proposition of the existential conflict that is undeniably of all times / A partir do conflito existencial definido como Eu vs Falso ego, conforme enunciado pela mitologia da antiguidade, este trabalho investiga a possibilidade de interpretação desta dualidade em textos midiáticos da atualidade.

Transmutações em Do inferno: aproximações entre romance gráfico e filme / Transmutations in From Hell: similarities between graphic novel and filmAmorim, Naiana Mussato 20 August 2012 (has links)
This work aims to study to homonymous works, From Hell, the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell and the film adaptation directed by Albert and Allen Hughes, so as to develop a media study as well as plot and script analysis, Based on the Media Studies, focusing the theories of Cluver, Moser, Genette and Diniz, among others, we intend to approximate the distance between the corpora in the tension caused their autonomy. Therefore, the analysis seeks to understand the idiosyncrasies of each art s composition and, by the distance between each work, to apprehend their singularities given by the authors. To approach the composition, authors such as Eisner, Cagnin, Barthes and Eisenstein gave support to understand the functioning of both the film and the graphic novel. To analyze and organize the plots, the theory of Barthes guided once again the understanding of the compounding elements of the story like main and complementary events, character description and atmosphere. In addition to this there is also the symbol study, essential to From Hell study, based on Brenda Mallon s reflections. Finally, the understanding of the film and the graphic novel is done by means of two themes gender and sex , followed by Hell aiming to measure the range of each work. Therefore, when we follow the trajectory of the smaller parts up to the main event, we build the understanding of the whole corpus, comparing the synchrony of each work and their form and content.

Incorporating Flow for a Comic [Book] Corrective of RhetconCastleberry, Garret 05 1900 (has links)
In this essay, I examined the significance of graphic novels as polyvalent texts that hold the potential for creating an aesthetic sense of flow for readers and consumers. In building a justification for the rhetorical examination of comic book culture, I looked at Kenneth Burke's critique of art under capitalism in order to explore the dimensions between comic book creation, distribution, consumption, and reaction from fandom. I also examined Victor Turner's theoretical scope of flow, as an aesthetic related to ritual, communitas, and the liminoid. I analyzed the graphic novels Green Lantern: Rebirth and Y: The Last Man as case studies toward the rhetorical significance of retroactive continuity and the somatic potential of comic books to serve as equipment for living. These conclusions lay groundwork for multiple directions of future research.

Super-héros victoriens : la transfictionnalité dans The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, suivi de Fiction PartyJanvier-Jalbert, Francis 04 1900 (has links)
Transfictionnality, a concept close to that of transtextuality, is defined by Richard Saint Gelais as "the phenomenon by which at least two texts, from the same author or not, relate jointly to the same fiction, whether by resumption of characters, extension of a previous plot or sharing a fictional universe". This Master’s thesis in research-creation examines Alan Moore's and Kevin O'Neill's use of transfictionnality in their graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1999-2019), and more specifically their recycling of narrative material from nineteenth century Great Britain, which is marked by the Industrial Revolution and the imperialist policies of the reign of Queen Victoria. Our aim is to better understand how the characters of literature of the Victorian era are appropriated by the authors, transformed and recontextualized so as to criticize the culture and the society that first generated them. Fiction Party is a transfictive and autofictional narrative in which Francis, the main character, is mistakenly invited to a party in honor of fiction at Dracula's Castle. He meets countless literary characters from every country and every epoch, including Antigone, Meursault, Emma Bovary, Don Quixote, and the sheriff of Nottingham. During the festivities, however, a murder is committed, and these great literary characters must then solve the mystery and identify the culprit, in a tribute to the detective fiction of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie.

“Day by day: coming of age is a process that takes time”: supporting culturally appropriate coming of age resources for urban Indigenous youth in care on Vancouver IslandMellor, Andrea Faith Pauline 16 July 2021 (has links)
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s first call to action is to reduce the number
of Indigenous children and youth in care, including keeping young people in culturally
appropriate environments. While we work towards this goal, culturally appropriate
resources are needed to support children and youth as evidence shows that when
Indigenous youth have access to cultural teachings, they have improved physical, mental,
emotional, and spiritual health outcomes.
Our project focused on the protective qualities of Indigenous coming of age teachings.
Together with our community partner Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services,
we worked to develop resources that inform and advocate for a culturally-centered
coming of age for urban Indigenous youth living in foster care in Victoria, British
Columbia on Lekwungen Territory. This dissertation begins with a literature review to
provide the social and historical context surrounding urban Indigenous youth-in-care’s
access to coming of age teachings. This is followed by a description of the Indigenous
research paradigm that guided our work, what it meant for us to do this project in a good
way, and the methods that we used to develop three visual storytelling knowledge sharing
tools. Three manuscripts are presented, two published and one submitted, that reflect a
strength-based vision of coming of age shared by knowledge holders who participated in
our community events.
The first manuscript retells the events of the knowledge holder’s dinner, where
community members shared their perspectives on four questions related to community
engagement and youth support. An analysis of the event’s transcripts revealed key themes including the responsibility of creating safe-spaces for youth, that coming of
age is a community effort, and the importance of youth self-determining their journey. A
graphic recording and short story are used to illustrate and narrate the relationship
between key themes and related signifiers. This manuscript highlights the willingness of
the community to collectively support youth in their journeys to adulthood.
The second manuscript focuses on our two youth workshops that had the objective of
understanding what rites of passage youth in SCCFS’s care engage with and how they
learn what cultural teachings were most important to them. The findings suggest that
when youth experience environments of belonging, and know they are ‘part of something
bigger’, qualities like self-determination, self-awareness, and empowerment are
strengthened.
The third manuscript focuses on how we translated our project findings into different
storytelling modalities using an Indigenist arts-based methodological approach. The
project findings provided the inspiration and content for a fictional story called Becoming
Wolf, which was adapted into a graphic novel, and a watercolour infographic. These
knowledge sharing media present our project findings in accessible and meaningful ways
that maintain the context and essences of our learnings.
This research illustrates how Indigenous coming of age is an experience of
interdependent teachings, events, and milestones, that contribute to the wellness of the
body, mind, heart, and spirit of youth and the Indigenous community more broadly.
Through our efforts, we hope to create a shared awareness about the cultural supports
available to urban Indigenous youth that can contribute to lifelong wellness. / Graduate

Caso: Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio / The Journalistic Graphic Novel and Investigative Journalism for stories of Human Rights Violations. Case: Kent State: Four Dead in OhioVelásquez Vargas, Diana 25 October 2021 (has links)
The journalistic graphic novel is a relatively new genre in the journalism profession that makes use of illustration and text to tell an investigated story. Meanwhile, investigative journalism is a branch of the profession that is characterized for being a form of slow journalism, which reveals unpublished information and has its origins related to narrative journalism and often deals with stories of human rights violations. The research carried out has evaluated how the journalistic graphic novel is an optimal genre to be applied in investigative journalism, thanks to its unique graphic narrative resources that enhance the findings and information obtained; as well as allowing the author to be transparent in their research and in the handling of stories of human rights violations. The object of study was the work "Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio", by the artist Derf Backderf; which proved to meet the characteristics of an investigative journalism piece that adequately addresses the shootings that occurred on May 4, 1970 in Ohio. The research collected academic theory on investigative journalism and the graphic novel; then, the selected graphic novel was analyzed. It was revealed that the narrative of the journalistic graphic novel allows the synthesis of complex information for the reader, as well as an immediate emotional impact on the story. It also manages to demonstrate the reporting techniques used, such as in-depth interviews, use of archive sources and fieldwork. / Tesis
