Women survivors of childhood sexual abuse : narratives of relationships with their mothers

Fletcher, Mary Lou 29 April 2004
This study is a narrative inquiry of the daughter mother relationship of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Interviews were conducted and narratives of the co-researchers experiences written. Understanding the role of the daughter mother relationship in the healing journey of women survivors was gained as the relationship was considered over time.
This study makes a unique contribution to the field of narrative research in childhood sexual abuse as well as a valuable contribution to research in daughter mother relationships. Two significant understandings have been gained through this work. First, the effects of child sexual abuse on the girl/woman were experienced as lasting and have demanded years of counselling and therapy to bring freedom to the psyche and autonomy to the woman. Second, and of particular note is the way childhood sexual abuse provoked a change of enormous magnitude to the daughter mother relationship, irrevocably altering it.
This study may enlighten issues of attachment, autonomy and independence within survivors of childhood sexual abuse. This study may have implications for the work of therapists and counsellors working with survivors.

Analytical-Numerical Methodology to Measure Undamaged, Fracture and Healing Properties of Asphalt Mixtures

Koohi, Yasser 1980- 14 March 2013 (has links)
Unlike in laboratory compacted asphalt mixtures, the distribution of viscoelastic properties in field layers is not uniform because of nonuniform air void distribution and aging. Therefore, characterization of field specimens is more challenging compared to that of laboratory compacted specimens. Formerly, characterization of field asphalt mixtures was based on binder tests which are useful but do not represent the properties of the asphalt mixtures because binder is only a component in the asphalt mixture. This study uses linear viscoelastic theory and numerical modeling to obtain the undamaged and damaged viscoelastic properties of both laboratory made and field compacted asphalt concrete. Additionally, it uses fracture mechanics principles to find the fracture and healing properties of aged asphalt specimens. The analytical models presented in this research have been successfully verified by testing the actual field specimens of different ages. The model developed in this dissertation is suitable to track the viscoelastic, fracture and healing properties of the field specimen with time and depth. The test protocols and analytical models described in this study can be used for the development of reliable performance models for field-aged asphalt layers.

An integrated approach to measure and model fatigue damage and healing in asphalt composites

Karki, Pravat 15 September 2015 (has links)
This study presents a test and analysis method to determine both damage and healing characteristics of asphalt composites using the same test specimen. The test involves applying multiple stretches of load cycles, each separated by a period of zero load introduced at several different levels of reduced stiffness. The analytical procedure involves (1) using modified correspondence principles to transform the time-dependent physical quantities (stress, strain and energy density) into time-independent pseudo-elastic quantities, and then (2) using viscoelastic continuum damage mechanics to quantify damage and healing properties of the material based on the transformed quantities. The results obtained using two different asphalt mortars subjected to uniaxial and shear load cycles confirmed the findings from the previous researchers that the characteristic pseudo stiffness versus damage relationship for a given material is independent of testing conditions. More importantly, this study demonstrated that the aforementioned relationship was also independent of the rest periods introduced intermittently during the cyclic tests. Results also show that healing defined in terms of the change in the internal state variable for damage represents the true healing potential of a material. Furthermore, healing properties obtained using the proposed test method (a) agreed with the properties obtained using a more rigorous protocol with multiple test specimens, and (b) were independent of the loading conditions used to induce fatigue damage. These observations strongly suggest that the proposed method can be used to predict damage and healing properties for any arbitrary loading condition from properties determined using the proposed protocol. / text

A Critical Analysis of Healing Touch for Depression and Anxiety

Harlow, Christina January 2013 (has links)
The use of provider based alternative medicine therapies such as chiropractic, massage, and acupuncture, has grown exponentially over the past decade as the price of traditional Western treatments has skyrocketed. Patients are seeking complementary treatments for a variety of ailments, including mental health. People with profound mental illness also have a reduced life expectancy and higher rates of chronic health problems than non-sufferers; and roughly 20% of people who used alternative therapies in the past year also had one or more psychiatric disorders. Healing Touch (HT) is based on the belief that humans have energy fields that change with states of illness; these energy fields can be manipulated to achieve wholeness or wellness. As nurses, touch has always been a part of our practice therefore it should not be a significant departure to entwine HT into our practice. Both anecdotal and research evidence has found that using HT for patients reduces anxiety and stress, helps support the life transition process, promotes self-empowerment, and enhances spiritual development. The implication of this evidence is that people suffering from anxiety and depression could benefit from HT in the primary care setting. When compared to the high cost of treating these illnesses, HT and other energy therapies are cost effective and have evidence supporting that treatment is effective enough to be inclusive. Depression and anxiety are extremely common and cross cultures, generations, and economic statuses. This describes the burden related to these conditions and why integrating HT in primary care practice is a viable, sustainable option. Current literature and research are discussed, and recommendations for practice in the form of a clinical practice protocol are presented.

Electric field-directed cell migration and endothelialization

Zhao, Zhiqiang January 2009 (has links)
Physiological electric fields (EFs) have been measured in many developing and regenerating systems and are modulated spatially, temporally and in magnitude. Many types of cells polarize and migrate in specific directions when exposed to a small applied EF similar in magnitude to those found endogenously. In the present investigation, an endogenous EF was recorded in an aortic explant. The response of three EPCs (MFLM-4, AEL-deltaR1 and AEL-deltaR1/Runx1), one endothelial cell line (HUVEC) and five other cell lines (MDA-MB-231, MTLn-3, HEK-293, COS-7 and CHO) in physiological EFs were shown. The roles of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels in the EFs directed cell migration were studied. The roles of intracellular calcium, intracellular calcium stores, purinergic signalling and gap junction communication in the intracellular calcium rising, calcium wave propagation and re-endothelialization were studied too. In conclusion, electrical signalling between cells and ionic fluxes in cells are important controlling mechanisms of endothelial behaviours. Electric fields and ionic fluxes regulate migration of endothelial cells and endothelial progenitor cells. Orchestrated endothelial behaviours and recruitment of endothelial progenitor cells repair injuries to endothelium, and may lead to angiogenesis. Manipulation of electric fields and control of ionic fluxes may be a promising approach to control endothelial cell migration and angiogenesis.
