Maglev high speed ground transportation for the Texas Triangle : a technology assessment

Rojas, Gabriel, active 2007 20 November 2013 (has links)
A maglev rail network connecting the Texas Triangle has the ability to unite this emerging mega-region with a highly efficient alternative to auto and air transport. This would serve to increase the economic sharing of resources and will improve the quality of life for residents with enhanced accessibility to jobs and services in all triangle cities. Many unforeseen benefits materialize from such a highly connected regional transportation infrastructure including cost reductions in highway maintenance and construction and reduced air traffic in congested skies and airports. This study examines the reasons for choosing a maglev system, regulatory barriers to implementing such a system, and the costs associated with a Maglev system built in the Texas Triangle. / text

High-speed high-power permanent magnet machine parameters, qualities, and considerations

Bergstrom, John Paul 18 December 2013 (has links)
Permanent magnet machines have become an attractive topology for several applications due to their high power density and brushless qualities as compared to conventional wound field machines or squirrel cage machines. The presences of permanent magnets provide distinct advantages, but at the same time unique behaviors that must be accounted for. Recent work has developed permanent magnet machines for high-power and high-speed applications such as may be found in the petro-chemical industry, naval ships, and energy storage systems. / text

A data interface for ultra high speed ADC integrated circuits

Castro Scorsi, Rafael 18 December 2013 (has links)
Analog-to-Digital (ADC) converters have been an essential building block of electronic design for years. As ADC components get faster, new data interfaces are required in order to keep up with the faster data rates while providing very high data integrity. The objective of this project was to design an inter-IC ADC interface for converters with data bandwidths as high as 56 Gigabytes per second. The main goal for this project was to create a mechanism for interfacing a general-purpose high-speed ADC integrated circuit with an FPGA. This will enable applications that can benefit from the reprogrammability offered by FPGAs as well as those that could not justify a monolithic integrated solution for cost reasons. The interface presented is based on the physical layer of the IEEE 10GBASE-KR specification for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE). Leveraging this specification provides significant benefits as it defines most of the services required by the interface, such as effcient encoding and forward error correction. Furthermore, using an interface as widely used as 10GBASE-KR leverages significant validation work as well as widespread support in mainstream FPGAs and by IP providers. The report will provide an analysis of the requirements of the ADC interface and a description of the architecture proposed. One key aspect of the design of the system was the analysis of the e ects of random bit errors in the channel and how to deal with them while making a robust interface. The causes of error are described and the critical sections of the system were simulated to validate the choice of Forward Error Correction solution. Finally, the report describes the working prototype system built in an FPGA board and provides a description of the performance achieved. / text

Sagan om Ostlänken : - Varför kommer höghastighetstågen till Östergötland? / The story of a new railway called ”Ostlänken” : Why do high speed trains come to Östergötland?

Söderberg, Erik January 2015 (has links)
High speed trains are very popular in Europe. In Sweden there has been a long political debate about the necessity of them. In 2008 there was a strong political no to the idea. However after some years of debate the government decided to build a new high speed railway between Järna (south of Stockholm) and Linköping, called “Ostlänken”. This study is about the decision-making process of an investment of 35 billion SEK involving a new railway during 2017 up to 2028. This study includes interviews with prominent politicians from different parties. The first issue concerns what arguments were used to promote the new railway, and how the local and regional politicians work to agree on a common stand point. Special interest is focused on the Right party (Moderaterna), who lead the coalition that governed Sweden from 2006 to 2014. In sum, four main issues were in focus. One conclusion is that a lack of railway-capacity between Stockholm and Linköping is important for the decision. Another issue is that “arbetslinjen” played an important role. The political interest in investments in infrastructure has raised sharply which also is positive for “Ostlänken”. A fourth issue is that globalization requires better connections to big airports.
