Queerable spaces: homosexualities and homophobias in contemporary film.

Demirkan-Martin, Vulcan Volkan January 2009 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to read contemporary films as symptoms of the societies they are made in, mainly contemporary Western societies, which I argue to be subtly but intensely homophobic. Films imagine/represent their own subject matter in terms of symbolic, encoded scenes. The decoding for the films I chose occurs through a use of very specific, heavily coded spaces as visualisable shorthand for a complex of homophobic reactions. Filmic texts do not have to have denotative non-heterosexual elements to be termed 'queer'. These texts become queer often in their reception by non-heterosexual audiences. In 'queering' these spaces and films, I extensively make use of tools of social geography, film studies and cultural studies The films I chose are not random choices, but they include certain themes that I believe to reflect the subtle homophobia in our societies. In the first chapter, Geographies of Cruising, I analyze the representation of streets and the leading character's cruising on the streets in Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick, 1999). The second chapter, Geographies of Effeminacy, concentrates on the denial of space to non-masculine men exemplified in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). In the third chapter, Geographies of Exclusion, the representation of a cellar in Mystic River (Clint Eastwood, 2003) serves to display the links between paedophilia and homosexuality. The fourth and final chapter, Geographies of Abuse and Rape, is an exercise on “out of placeness” and examines the connections made between male/male rape and homosexuality in I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead (Mike Hodges, 2003). The last chapter is an extended reading of Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005), in which the tension between closed spaces and wild spaces leads to a discussion of contemporary representation of homosexuality and a summary of the chapters.

A REACTION TO LGBT DISCRIMINATION IN THE SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH: AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE REJECTED MASCULINITIES.

Josué de Castro Filho 26 August 2016 (has links)
This study explored a response to the social suffering caused by discrimination and social exclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in a Protestant Christian church: The Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Its an exploratory survey, made through a virtual ethnography of a digital social network called SDA KINSHIP, formed by members and former members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church that have some relationship with the LGBT community. It focused on the description and analysis of a space that allows the expressions of non-hegemonic masculinities that are not allowed in the religious space. This research tried to interpret the social suffering felt by men with nonhegemonic masculinities and their resistance actions against power relations in an institutional environment that creates discourses of exclusion and social oppression. It was observed that the creation of a welcoming environment promotes the construction of a concept of masculinity that goes beyond the limits of the male behavior based on a traditional background, and is acted by behaviors of solidarity and acceptance of the male diversity. It was observed that their response to the social suffering relies on a subtle resistance, which is its own existence, or its survival moving along in the margins of the churchs paths. Some identity bonds were seen between the groups, as SDA KINSHIP reproduces some ideas from the church in a more acceptant way. The male body had great importance in the discussions of masculinity and it was the place where the ideologies about gender and sexuality were confronted.

Rodrigues, André Iribure January 2008 (has links)
This paper purposes an analyses of the representations of the homosexualities on advertisement and propaganda broadcasted on Brazilian television between 1979 and 2008. The diachronic analysis of the corpus from 35 TV commercials counts on a referential about advertisement and propaganda as a space of cultural mediation of social practices. The history of homosexualities and the studies of gender, gays and lesbians and the queer theory sustain the criticism of the conformation of the representations under the gender binarisms as fundamental part of sustentation of hegemonic model. The norm is pointed and criticized on the maintenance of compulsory heterosexuality, regulating and being tensioned by the visibility of what escapes from the current model. The Social Representations methodologically permit the appearance of perceived alterations on the corpus as patterns of a regime of representation of the homosexualities on the advertising text. From the Analysis of the Content, two categories of the representations are pointed out, the stereotyped and the deconstructionist ones, presenting the constructions of the homosexualities on the advertising text in this period.

A psicologia, a educação e as homossexualidades: o normal e o patológico nas produções discursivas das revistas Boletim de Psicologia, Revista Brasileira de Psicanálise e Cadernos de Pesquisa nas décadas de 1970 e 1980 / The psychology, the education and the homosexualities: the normal and the pathological in the discursive productions of the journals Boletim de Psicologia, Revista Brasileira de Psicanálise and Cadernos de Pesquisa from 1970 e 1980

Eddine, Eder Ahmad Charaf 14 December 2018 (has links)
The prejudices and moral judgments concerning human sexuality, especially when it escapes the social norm, do not go without repercussions in the scientific investigations, especially those located in the intersection between Psychology and Education. The following thesis has as its goal understand how the issue related to normality and pathology were joined in the way which the homosexualities were worked out by this knowledge fields in the 1970s and 1980s decades, having an empirical basis the reading of scientific journals published in this period from São Paulo. These decades were picked by the Foucauldian concepts of provenance and historical emergence. Putting in another way, considering these years as the turning point, in which homosexuality no longer has for Medicine and Psychiatry, for instance, the conception of deviant, pathological, to become a possibility of identity. This turning point, by pressure of the gay social movement, has as milestones the withdrawal of homosexuality from the list of mental disorders by the American Association of Psychiatry, in 1973; by American Association of Psychology, in 1975; and finally, by the World Health Organization, in 1990. In Brazil the depathologization occurred in 1985 by the Federal Board of Medicine. The Boletim de Psicologia, published by the Psychology Association of São Paulo, and the Revista Brasileira de Psicanálise, published by the Brazilian Society of Psychoanalysis of São Paulo, were integrated into the corpus of the research for the importance they exercised in the field of Brazilian psychology. Given its prestigie and impact capacity the journal Caderno de Pesquisa, published by the Carlos Chagas Foundation, was taken as a counterpoint in the educational field. Gathering the data, was found 414 copies of these journals, resulting a total of 3822 articles. 27 (0.6%) of the amount of articles present contents on the subject under investigation, of which 18 (0.4%) are in Psychology area and 9 (0.2%) of the Education area; 13 (0.3%) are part of the Psychology Bulletin, 5 (0.1%) of the Brazilian Journal of Psychoanalysis, and 9 (0.2%) of the Research Papers. The analyzes of the scientific discourses were carried out through theories that understand them as social formulations and historically localized. For that, the Foucaultian perspective was used as reference, particularly with regard to the power-knowledgesexuality relation, as well as the Queer theory. The outcome indicates the relative silence of these journals on a socially debated subject and with previous references in the field of Psychology and Education. Despite the movement to remove homosexuality from the list of pathological disorders, observed in the medical, psychiatric and psychological catalogs and the advances of the gay movement since the 1970s, the discourses present in these scientific journals are mostly elaborated mainly in the Bulletin of Psychology and in the Brazilian Journal of Psychoanalysis, in the sense of pathologizing homosexuality, pointing to their identification through clinical cases and also of psychological tests and, therefore, for the supposed cure and prevention. In an alternative sense, in the Cadernos de Pesquisa, discourses have been found that go in the liberalizing direction of sexualities, even though they do not directly address homosexuality. The analyzed articles are against the social, scientific and political gains of the homosexual, some remaining in the sense pathologizing and others not directly addressing the subject. Thus, even in a period considered repressive for dissident sexualities, discourses reaffirm domination over minds and bodies, which is inscribed in Foucault\'s critical repressive hypothesis.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / This research investigates the field of print publications conceived as "gay press" in Brazil, taking them as relevant instances of the creation and re-elaboration of sexual and gender categories and identities, and of the political visibility and experiences of homosexualities in Brazil from the second half of the twentieth century. Focusing on newspapers and magazines mostly addressed to a homosexual male reader, published in the 1960s (O Snob), 1970s (Gente Gay e LampiÃo da Esquina), 1990s (Sui Generis) and 2000s (Junior), the thesis analyzes how these publications at the same time forge and are immersed within the processes of identifications that reiterate, displace or pose a risk to these categories and their classification potential. It critically questions the themes privileged by these vehicles for being in the interest of its audience and in the âpublic interestâ. It investigates, fundamentally, the construction and the search for legitimacy of a journalistic field that is claimed as âgay pressâ, taking it as a social field of intersection between social subjectivities, practices and knowledge which produces discourses about the experiences of subjects and ways of being. It also examines how the demarcation of these publications as gay involve complex processes of negotiation about dynamics that circumscribe and exceed the (re)constructions of categories in these vehicles, associated with the processes of construction of a lectureship shaped in homosexualities that are historically crossed by multiplicities, disputes and contradictory strategies of affirmation and social legitimacy. Beyond dialogue with sexuality and gender studies and socio-anthropological research addressing journalism as a field of symbolic production, the methodology involves the analysis of discourses circulated in the cited publications, and interviews with journalists and employees currently working or formerly employed by this segment of the press. The aim is to construct a dialogic reflection between the researcher and journalists about both their practices and this discursive production.

This thesis has been produced for my Master's degree in Environmental Education for the Research Group, Education and the Training of Educators, and had as its objective to analyze the production of homosexual activist´s identities. The thesis analyzed narratives of homosexual activists who belonged to the group CELLOS/MG, located in Belo Horizonte. The narratives were produced with the Narrative Investigation methodology. Connections were established with Cultural Studies, especially the post-structuralists, using authors such as Hall, Louro, Silva, Veiga-Neto among others, and contributions of Michel Foucault. Environmental Education is understood as an area of knowledge that has no scientific "mooring cables" of epistemological production inside science, and it is interpreted as a way of giving voice, respectfully and tolerantly, to differences through broadening dialogue to make it more inclusive. This research project relied on authors who theorize about the homosexual movement, such as Facchini, Green, Fry, MacRae, Câmara, among others. It is through the narration of stories within the homosexual movement that activists constitute themselves through multiple discourses. Appropriating information imported from such countries as the United States, and during a dictatorship in Brazil, the 1970s saw the birth of the first actions of a homosexual movement in Brazil. The group CELLOS/MG became an idea in 2001, when a group of students, members and supporters of other dissident organizations, decided to create a group. Four people collaborated with this research project. Rick is 31 years old, white, hemophilic and poor. He joined the homosexual movement through the invitation of a friend. Lucas is 31 years old, medium brown-skinned, and of Indian descent. He did not start his political work in the homosexual movement, but rather in the Catholic Church and as a supporter of the Workers Party (Partido do Trababladores-PT). Vicente is a 43 year old middle-class, white man, who joined the homosexual movement when he moved from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte, at age 38. Edivan is a 27 year old black man. He joined the movement in Curitiba through the group Dignidade, participated with the group GHAP in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, and then joined CELLOS/MG as the third group he has worked with. When analyzing their narratives the notion of "perceiving oneself as homosexual" emerged in their discourses as the first "trait" of these subjects. The discourse that leads one to "to perceive of oneself as homosexual" is connected, many times, to biological traits. The infantile tricks mentioned by the collaborators can be understood as social practices that constitute sexualized bodies, since three activists referred to them. In our "singularly confessing" society, the importance of the public revelation of a homosexual identity plays an important role in constituting an activist. This "coming out" can be understood as a strategy of groups to achieve the goal of "obtaining their rights". Their words make us understand that "coming out" constitutes a determining attribute for homosexual activists. The homosexual"cause" is characteristic trait of their identity. The discrimination that they have all suffered is also a common trait. As far as CELLOS/MG is concerned, their narratives make us understand that the group worries about the constitution of its activists, referring to this process as "education" [training]. All activists stated that this education [training] took place within the group. Thus, I could work with aspects that indicate how identity and difference are produced within the homosexual movement.
