Human-urban radiation exchange simulation modelPark, Sookuk 28 April 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to develop an improved human radiation exchange model for use by planners and researchers. Although applicable for all environments, emphasis will be on urban areas.
All processes of radiation exchange between the human body surface and surrounding environments were investigated through human body area factors (effective radiation area factor, feff, and projected area factor, fp), existing human thermal exchange models and three-dimensional (3D) computer simulation models with collected microclimatic data.
For new body area factors, a sample of standing contemporary Canadian adults in normal-weight (male: 31 persons, female: 40) and over-weight (male: 48, female: 20) body mass index (BMI) categories were analyzed. A 3D mean body model was created for each category. Only very small differences in feff and fp were found between genders and BMI categories. Differences in feff and fp values between this study and previous studies were very large, up to 0.101 and 0.173, respectively.
Another common body posture, walking, was also studied for the normal-weight male and female BMI categories. 3D computer walking body models at four stride positions were created. The directionless fp values for walking posture had minor differences between genders and positions in a stride. However, the differences of mean directional fp values between azimuth angles were great enough (up to 0.072) to create important differences in modeled radiation receipt. When both standing and walking postures are considered, the mean feff value of standing (0.826) and walking (0.846), 0.836, could be used. However, fp values should be selected carefully because differences between directional and directionless fp values were large enough that they could influence the estimated level of human thermal sensation.
A new human radiation exchange model was developed using the new body area factors and compared with five existing models and one method (Burt, COMFA, MENEX, OUT_SET* and RayMan models and the six-directional method) using collected microclimatic data observed in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Most differences between models came from absorbed solar radiation, especially absorbed direct beam solar radiation because of differences in fp* (=fp×feff) and feff or some missing components (feff or view factors). The lowest differences between the new model and the RayMan model alter the net all-wave radiation estimate up to 29 Wm-2, which can be significant in the human thermal exchange model.
For 3D computer estimation, a new human-urban radiation exchange simulation model was developed combining the new human radiation exchange model and improved urban area factors (i.e., albedos and view factors of sunny and shaded building, ground and vegetation surfaces). The results of the new computer model were compared with microclimatic data collected in Nanaimo, B.C., Canada and Changwon, Republic of Korea as well as with two other 3D computer simulation programs, RayMan Pro and ENVI-met 3.1. The differences between the collected data and the new model were very small. Their correlation was very strong, over 0.99 for total radiation. RayMan Pro and ENVI-met 3.1 programs had larger differences, and their correlations with measured data were weaker than the new model’s. Accurate meteorological and urban setting data should be obtained for better results.
The new model will give planners and researchers a simple tool to estimate accurate radiation effects in complex urban areas. / Graduate

Human Action Recognition In Video Data For Surveillance ApplicationsGurrapu, Chaitanya January 2004 (has links)
Detecting human actions using a camera has many possible applications in the security industry. When a human performs an action, his/her body goes through a signature sequence of poses. To detect these pose changes and hence the activities performed, a pattern recogniser needs to be built into the video system. Due to the temporal nature of the patterns, Hidden Markov Models (HMM), used extensively in speech recognition, were investigated. Initially a gesture recognition system was built using novel features. These features were obtained by approximating the contour of the foreground object with a polygon and extracting the polygon's vertices. A Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) was fit to the vertices obtained from a few frames and the parameters of the GMM itself were used as features for the HMM. A more practical activity detection system using a more sophisticated foreground segmentation algorithm immune to varying lighting conditions and permanent changes to the foreground was then built. The foreground segmentation algorithm models each of the pixel values using clusters and continually uses incoming pixels to update the cluster parameters. Cast shadows were identified and removed by assuming that shadow regions were less likely to produce strong edges in the image than real objects and that this likelihood further decreases after colour segmentation. Colour segmentation itself was performed by clustering together pixel values in the feature space using a gradient ascent algorithm called mean shift. More robust features in the form of mesh features were also obtained by dividing the bounding box of the binarised object into grid elements and calculating the ratio of foreground to background pixels in each of the grid elements. These features were vector quantized to reduce their dimensionality and the resulting symbols presented as features to the HMM to achieve a recognition rate of 62% for an event involving a person writing on a white board. The recognition rate increased to 80% for the "seen" person sequences, i.e. the sequences of the person used to train the models. With a fixed lighting position, the lack of a shadow removal subsystem improved the detection rate. This is because of the consistent profile of the shadows in both the training and testing sequences due to the fixed lighting positions. Even with a lower recognition rate, the shadow removal subsystem was considered an indispensable part of a practical, generic surveillance system.

Global and local identities: screening the body (politic) in the medical drama seriesSwanepoel, Jan-Hendrik 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation investigates the medical drama series as a television phenomenon which
foregrounds the body as central narrative device. By considering House M.D. and Jozi H as
global and local manifestations of this genre, transnational, spatial and metafictional
categorisations of the body are traced to reveal its nature as social spectacle, and meaningbearing
corporeal text. The body and its concomitant identities are exposed as continually and
continuously screened inside, outside and, moreover, in relation to the hospital. As an
institutional space, the hospital is (re)positioned in national and transnational discourses as
nexus for personal and public, individual and societal, as well as local and global truths about the
body (politic). Michel Foucault’s understanding of the human body, its position as part of the
larger body politic, and its control by the state is employed to foreground the bio-political
classification of the (ab)normal body. Both the hospital, as space for healing, controlling and
containing the body, as well as the body, as a corporeal and a psychic space itself, are
signified as heterotopic spaces: part of, but also outside other places and bodies.
liggaam as sentrale narratiewe middel aanwend.
Sowel hospitaal, as helingsruimte,
liggame.

To determine the relationship between dietary intake, body composition and incidence of upper respiratory tract infections in triathletes during training and competition for the IronmanMain, Carey Anne 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MNutr)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background: The Ironman® triathlon is an ultra-endurance event. It has previously been
shown that heavy training schedules and racing ultra-endurance events can lead to immune
impairment. Evidence supporting the potential role of dietary intake and body composition on
immune impairment or upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) is currently lacking.
Aim: To investigate the relationship between dietary intake, body composition and the
incidence of URTI in triathletes residing in Port Elizabeth (PE), during training and competition
for the Ironman® 2011 triathlon.
Method: An observational longitudinal descriptive study with an analytical component was
conducted. The study population included triathletes living in PE, who completed an Ironman®
distance event one year prior to, and who were training for the April 2011 Ironman®. Habitual
dietary intake was assessed with a quantitative food frequency questionnaire; and race
dietary strategies with a three day food record. Body composition was determined with
anthropometry and the incidence of URTI was assessed with the WURSS-44. A general
health screen (SF-36) was also administered. Results: Habitual dietary intake during the three months pre- and post-Ironman® 2011
triathlon was adequate for all nutrients except for carbohydrate intake in female and male
participants (pre-Ironman® of 4.0 (1.7) g/kg body weight (BW)/day and 5.4 (1.8) g/kg BW/day;
and post-Ironman® 3.0 (1.0) g/kg BW/day and 4.7 (1.5) g/kg BW/day respectively).
Carbohydrate-loading strategies were below recommendations with intakes of 6.0 (2.9) and
5.1 (2.5) g/kg BW/day for female and male participants respectively. Race day nutrition
strategies were below recommendations for carbohydrate intake. Post-race dietary intake was
below recommendations for carbohydrate in the female participants (0.9 (0.5) g/kg BW). Body
mass index was 26.6 (3.4) kg/m2 and 26.1 kg/m2 (1.40) for female and male study participants
respectively. Body fat percentage was at the upper end for endurance athletes (29.3 (9.4) %
and 13.7 (5.1) % for females and males respectively). In this study 25 % of the triathletes
(N=20) developed an episode of URTI during the 3 months post-Ironman®. Dietary intake
parameters measured three months pre-Ironman® that had a significant influence on URTI
were: potassium (p=0.04) and thiamine (p=0.02) and dietary intake parameters measured 3
months post-Ironman® that had a significant influence on URTI were: total protein (p=0.04);
isoleucine (p=0.03); leucine (p=0.03); phenylalanine (p=0.03); valine (p=0.02); thiamine
(p=0.01); and Beta-tocopherol (p=0.03). Dietary intake parameters measured during the race that had a significant influence on URTI were: selenium (p=0.04); folate (p=0.04) and proline
(p=0.02). Body composition did not have a significant influence on URTI.
Conclusion: Habitual dietary intake three months pre- and post-Ironman® as well as pre- and
post Ironman race strategies were low for carbohydrate. Body composition indicated that
athletes were at the upper end associated with endurance sport. There was a relationship
found between an episode of URTI and dietary intake. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Agtergrond: Die Ironman® driekamp is 'n ultra-uithouvermoë kompetisie. Daar is voorheen
kg LM). Die liggaamsmassa-indeks was 26.6 (3.4) kg/m2 en 26.1 (1.4) kg/m2 vir vroulike en
manlike deelnemers onderskeidelik.
was, totale proteïen (p=0.04); isoleusien (p=0.03), leusien (p=0.03), fenielalanien (p=0.03),
