Chemistry and hydrography of Oregon coastal waters and the Willamette and Columbia Rivers : March and June, 1971Kantz, Kent William 01 December 1972 (has links)
An inexpensive method for calibrating an infrared analyzer
to measure varying ranges of carbon dioxide partial pressures
(Pco₂) is described. A discussion is made of the hydrographic (temperature,
salinity, and sigma-t) and chemical (dissolved oxygen, AOU, Pco₂
pH, and nutrients) variables that were observed along the Newport
hydrographic line in March and June 1971. A winter storm in late
March led to an inshore feature of doming isolines. Indications of
early seasonal upwelling and photosynthesis were also observed.
June conditions were characterized by a deteriorated upwelling
regime and an inshore phytoplankton bloom. The Columbia River
plume was also driven abnormally close (65 kilometers) to shore by
southwesterly winds.
Chemical variables as observed in the Columbia and
Willamette Rivers in June, 1971 are compared to data from a study
made in December, 1968. A large gradient in Pco₂ and temperature
is observed in the Willamette River approximately 3.5 kilometers
upstream from the confluence in June, but not in December. This
observation is related to the seasonal flow patterns of the two rivers.
Chemical variables in the Columbia River are influenced by seasonal
phytoplankton activity, but oxidation of organic matter is the predominating
factor in the Willamette River. Pco₂ values calculated
from pH and alkalinity measurements agreed to ± 5 percent with
directly measured Pco₂ values in the Columbia River. / Graduation date: 1973

The Plan of Development and Environmental Protection - PDPA, was elaborated to guide action in the brainstorming to preserve an indispensable source to the public supplying of the Region Metropolitan of São Paulo. The documents presented in the PDPA would have to allow the public sector to deal with two variable of difficult treatment that is, the preservation of the hydric source and the urban expansion, indicating estimated that they would guide the programs of recovery of the Hydrogeographic Basin of the Guarapiranga. In result of these estimated detached in the chapter 4 - item 4.1, the Plan of Development and Environmental Protection - PDPA, it dealt with multiple questions to the use and occupation of the ground of the basin of the Guarapiranga and to the quality of waters of its tributaries and is on this document that the work, however developed, analyzes the actions proposals. Always with critical vision and despite the undeniable quality of this plan, considering congregating public organizations diverse, of different administrative spheres, with excellent aspects of dependent actions of agreed efforts of two or more executors, the PDPA, despite the vanguard in these actions left some challenges to win e, more still, lessons that must be objects of quarrels and commentaries aiming at to its absorption in the case of new similar projects to the Guarapiranga. Therefore, this work of dissertation inside aims at of the scope of this plan of environment recovery to evaluate if the same it took care of to the main requirements for an ordinance of the compatible use with the conditions of the hydraulic basin, whose main objective is water the public supplying of 3 million inhabitants.
