Compararam-se os resultados obtidos àqueles encontrados com a aplicação do índice Barthel, uma escala de avaliação da independência em atividades básicas da vida diária (AVO), e ao nível de independência atribuído a esses idosos pela instituição. Outras variáveis ilustrativas, como acuidade auditiva/visual, nível cognitivo, número de diagnósticos e de medicamentos em uso, foram também avaliadas. Concluiu-se que há correlação entre os testes aplicados, sendo o instrumento proposto, útil para se obterem informações sobre o nível de independência dos idosos nas AVO / Abstract: An instrument for the inicial assessment of the mobility in the elderly was proposed and put into practice in the evaluation of 30 people 70 years old and over, in an institution. The results were compared to those obtained with the application of the Barthel index, a scale to assess the basic activities of daily living (AOL), and to the level of independence attributed to the elders by the institution. Other iIIustrative variables, like auditory/visual acuity, cognitive level, number of diagnosis and drugs in use, were also examined. It was concluded that there was correlation between the tests, and that the proposed instrument was useful to get information about the level of independence of those elders in the ADL / Mestrado / Mestre em Gerontologia
