This study examined the interaction of religion and politics in Bangladesh in light of the hypothesis that the nature of the particular process of Islamization of the state of Bangladesh, leading to its present semi-Islamic status, has been a function of three independent variables: the specific nature of Islam in the society; the configuration of political interests; and the international environment. The study found that the semi-Islamic status of the state in Bangladesh achieved under military rule is a consequence more of the manipulation of Islam by the military for the sake of legitimacy and of the influence of the Middle East, particularly the flow of remittances, rather than changes in the value orientation of the people of Bangladesh.

The author of this study has for sorne time been interested in the status and history of education in Canada as a whole. As a teacher, he has been acutely aware of his ignorance of what goes on in the schools of other provinces, and has been curious to learn what external and historical forces have helped to shape whatever pattern of education Canada can be said to possess. Part of his ignorance was dispelled and some of his curiosity satisfied in doing graduate research on the history of education in Canada. Part of this research involved a consideration of American influences on Canadian education. From this arose the idea of a more extended study of such influences. The present thesis is the result. It was soon determined that no comprehensive or thorough study of this topic was extant. Despite quite heavy labours, the writer is ruefully forced to concede that the situation has not changed. This work is far from constituting a thorough or comprehensive study of American influences on Canadian education. Above all, it does not attempt, nor is it intended to be, an evaluative work. Its basic aim is to document the fact of widespread American influence. To this end, numerous studies, annual reports, surveys, scholarly inquiries and sound secondary works were consulted, many of them extending back to early days. A computer simulation study is conducted to explore the interaction of alternative segmentation strategies and the competitiveness of the market environment, a goal that can neither be tackled by purely analytic approaches nor is sufficient and undistorted real market data available to deduct findings in an empirical manner. The fundamental idea of the simulation is to increase competition in the artificial marketplace and to study the influence of segmentation strategy and varying market conditions on organizational success. Success/failure is measured using two performance criteria: number of units sold and survival of firms over 36 periods of time. Three central findings emerge: (1) the more competitive a market environment, the more successful the concentrated market segmentation strategy, (2) increased levels of marketing budgets do not favour firms following a concentrated segmentation strategy and (3) frequent rethinking and strategy modification impairs organizations that concentrate on target segments. The legend of Shambhala incorporated in the Tibetan Canon, has been one of the favourite motives of Tibetan Buddhism throughout the centuries. High lamas and laity alike venerated the legend connecting their innermost aspirations with it. For some it represents a mystical millennial country revealing itself only to the chosen ones, while others perceive it as a symbol of the hidden treasures of the mind. This way or the other, the legend of Shambhala remains a living belief for many. The present hardships of Tibet made the legend with its leitmotif of future victory of Buddhism, especially viable. / When the legend reached the West in the beginning of this century, it inspired many westerners including political leaders, and acquired diverse and innovative interpretations. / Conveying the ever cherished human dream of a better world beyond ours, the legend of Shambhala proved to be a ubiquitous symbol surpassing its original Buddhist framework.

The complete thesis in print form is available from the University of Adelaide Library. / In human populations, perturbed growth in early life and ageing have been identified as risk factors for the development of Insulin resistance syndrome (IRS). The consequences of restricted prenatal growth on postnatal function have been investigated using numerous experimental models of intrauterine growth retardation, mainly in the rat. These studies have shown that some, but not all, aspects of postnatal function that are programmed in humans are also programmed in the rat. This study was designed to determine whether IRS develops with increasing age in the guinea pig as it does in the human and whether the development of the syndrome is more pronounced in aged offspring which have undergone spontaneous fetal growth restriction and accelerated growth in the neonatal period. It appeared that the guinea pig is a suitable animal model of ageing, displaying many of the metabolic, cardiovascular and anthropometric changes seen in humans.
