The material culture of Hlubi male initiation: a case study from Matatiele, Eastern Cape, South AfricaZulu, John January 2016 (has links)
A dissertation submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the Degree of Master of Social
Sciences in the Department of Anthropology

University of the Witwatersrand
March 2016 / This is a study of the material culture associated with male circumcision rituals among Hlubi
people in the Matatiele region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. In recent years social
scientists and public commentators have paid increasing attention to male circumcision in the
context of controversies around ‘botched’ circumcisions, on the one hand, and the growing
evidence, on the other hand, that male circumcision plays a role in restricting the spread of
HIV. Much less attention has been paid, however, to a vital issue that underpins all these
concerns: what materials give male circumcision its distinctive qualities as a cultural process,
and how do various kinds of participants and observers think about those materials in relation
to other domains of material culture, e.g. medical circumcision. This study will approach the
topic through unstructured interviews conducted with various groups of informants / MT2017

Characteristics, modifications and concerns : ritual initiation among KwaBhaca males.Ngaloshe, Christina Nosabata. January 2000 (has links)
This study investigates the distinguishing characteristics and the modifications to the
traditional male initiation ritual as practised in KwaBhaca in the Eastern Cape. The concerns
surrounding the incidence of death and maiming from related traditions is also investigated.
The study reveals that
• the male initiation ritual is still highly regarded in KwaBhaca;
• the male initiation ritual itself is still performed strictly traditionally in KwaBhaca;
• the male initiation ritual as practised in KwaBhaca has been successfully performed with
minimal negative incident attributable to the performance of traditional circumcision;
• where there is incidence of a negative reaction, this is usually attributable to a prior health
condition of the initiate, and in these circumstances, the initiate is referred to a medical
doctor, on condition that the medical doctor is himself an initiate, and that the consultation
will be conducted in a place deemed to be safe from spiritual contamination
• incidences of maiming and death can be attributed to a number of causes, associated with
poor practice and unacceptable conduct;
• boys who do not undergo circumcision in the traditional fashion are not regarded as men
and remain boys in the eyes of the community. This means that they have to forego
participation in important socio-spiritual ceremonies;
• there is a necessity to share the experience of the successful traditional circumcision
process to avoid further misadventure, maiming and death;
• it is not the mechanics of the process of traditional circumcision that endangers lives, but
the poor practice of the iingcibi (traditional surgeons) and other significant role-players
including the initiates;
• The traditional teaching that accompanies the ritual of circumcision is as important, if not
more important, than the ritual itself.
The study concludes with a series of recommendations aimed at rehabilitating and supporting
the continuation of this important and venerated tradition. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2000.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-20 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / This dissertation, entitled The role of initiation rites in the yaawo community: case of the city of
Lichinga-Mozambique has the aim: to analyze the social role of initiation rites in the yaawo
community; to characterize the practice of initiation rites in this community in present times Of
cultural flow; to differentiate male and female initiation related to practice and thematic and to
describe the role of initiation rites in the preservation of the socio-cultural values of the region. Its
execution has become possible through research developed within the community, involving
initiates as witness, teachers and managers of the schools where these initiates seek their learning.
The research with schools and its agents aimed to analyze the relationship level between the
practice of initiation rites and school institutions. The findings showed that initiation rites have the
role of reinforcing internal social cohesion among members of the community, disseminating
among their participants the spirit of solidarity and awakening the sense of belonging. They also
have the role of socialization between initiates and the community at large. They create moral
guidelines and outline the community's rules of social conduct. Initiation in the yaawo context
means the attainment of social majority. By initiation the individual passes from childhood to
adulthood, thus becoming part of the active part of the life of his community and enjoying full
rights. They also mean the highest moment of the exaltation of culture and community identity.
iniciação e as instituições escolares.
A iniciação no contexto yaawo
comunidade.

Previous issue date: 2016-05-23 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico - CNPq / The aim of this paper is to discuss the absence of ?psychology continents? in modern western society, emblematized in the absence and weakening of dimensions of ?rites? and ?initiation rituals?. Asserting all crisis process and emptying of contemporary identities, called post-modern by some, our hypothesis works with the perception that the gap felt by these complex social procedures, common to all non-secular societies, would converge into unconscious reproduction of its logic found in the creation of miscellaneous contemporary groups. The Black Blocs was the group we used to design this parallel: collective phenomenon existent in diversified nationalities, analyzed beyond its political intents in its most archaic and unconscious dimensions and stimuli. It is a bibliographical, theoretical and revision research in which we illustrate this parallel from the analysis of several detailed elements in the rites and initiation rituals found in implicit symbologies and structure and in its body of actions and foundations of thought / O objetivo desta disserta??o ? discutir a aus?ncia dos ?continentes psicol?gicos? na sociedade moderna ocidental, emblematizados na aus?ncia e enfraquecimento das dimens?es dos ?ritos? e ?rituais de inicia??o?; corroborando em todo processo de crise e ?esvaziamento? das identidades contempor?neas, para alguns chamada p?s-moderna.
