The Integration of Games into English Teaching ¡GA Study of Elementary School English Teachers¡¦ Attitudes and Practices in Kaohsiung City, Kaohsiung and Ping Tung Counties

The randomly sampled subjects in this study are elementary school English teachers from Kaohsiung city, Kaohsiung and Ping-Tung counties. The study was designated into a questionnaire survey with the aim to investigate elementary school English teachers¡¦ attitudes and consideration factors toward the integrative use of games and their English-teaching practices. 302 subjects were randomly selected, data were analyzed through several statistical measures, such as item analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, stepwise multiple regression. It is hoped to promote more active, motivating and inspiring teaching in English instruction. According to the analyses of the questionnaire, several major findings are as follows¡G 1. Most elementary school English teachers agreed that integrative use of games in the English-teaching did not necessarily promote their students¡¦ learning achievement. 2. Elementary school English teachers used games in English class at least once per week. 3. The least used teaching aid for Elementary school English teachers was building blocks. 4. Elementary school English teachers used to attend the workshops that were sponsored by the schools and publishers were more likely using games in their English-teaching; while those who attended workshops sponsored by University¡¦s English departments less likely used games in their teaching. 5. English teacher, English teaching experience in the elementary school is over 16 years, teaching over 21 English instructional sessions per week, Elementary school English teachers joined the institutions that held the workshops on games by ¡§elementary schools¡¨, spent much time using games in their English teaching. 6. English teachers¡¦ attitudes and consideration factors toward the integrative use of games showed little correlation with their actual practices in English-teaching. Finally, based upon the above findings, the researcher provided several suggestions for teachers, elementary schools and future researchers who might be interested in this topic.

Application of K12 Digital School Integrating Information in Biology Instruction¡ÐTake¡¨Human Digestive and Circulatory System¡¨ as example

This study aims to discuss the teaching portfolio and learning efficacy gained after integrating K12 digital school information into the biology lessons of junior high school. The research method is to divide students into two groups: two classes of 7th grade junior high students are the experimental group, which receive K12 integrated teaching; and three classes of 7th grade junior high students are the control group, which receive traditional teaching. The experimental course is ¡§human digestion and circulation system,¡¨ consisting of 19 units, lasting for 6 weeks. During the experimental process, the researcher collected diverse types of evaluation information, including observations, peer reviews, student works, learning slips, review questions, and surveys, in order to give research findings greater objectivity and accuracy. Results suggest that, in terms of learning efficacy, the overall learning efficacy of the experimental group is better than that of the control group. Among all, there is a significant difference between students having moderate and low scores. Regarding learning attitudes, there is no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. However, many students hold positive attitudes towards K12 regarding homework, unit assessment, and learning slips. Regarding teaching applications, upon first use of K12 support teaching, there were difficulties experienced in installing the digital teaching materials. However, as they become more accustomed to the use of K12, they could easily implement the ideals of diversified evaluation. In sum, the K12 digital school is a helpful auxiliary tool for teaching.

The aim of this study is to investigate junior and senior high school English teachers¡¦ concerns and behaviors about integrating information technology into English instruction, then to observe the variance resulting from teachers having different backgrounds, and finally to explore the relationships among them. The participations in this study are332 junior and senior high school English teachers from Taipei and Kaohsiung cities. ¡§School environment scale,¡¨ ¡§Innovative teaching behavior scale,¡¨ ¡§Integrating information technology into English instruction cognition scale,¡¨ ¡§Stages of concern questionnaire,¡¨ and ¡§Integrating information technology into English instruction behavior scale¡¨ are adopted as instruments of analysis in this study. Data were analyzed in the use of mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, multivariate analysis of variances, and canonical correlation. The major findings of this study are as followed: I. There are significant differences in junior and senior high school English teachers¡¦ concerns and behaviors of integrating information technology into English instruction in term of the academic degrees, time of contacting computer, time of using computer each week, time of using computer in English instruction each week, time of taking computer related training, and information literacy. II. For junior and senior high school English teachers, their school environment, cognition of integrating information technology into English instruction, innovation in teaching, and concern of integrating information technology into English instruction are significantly related to their behavior of integrating information technology into English instruction. III. English teachers use information technology in listening instruction the most, next is in speaking instruction. The information technology English teachers use most is tapes, next are VCD/DVD/CD-ROM, and cassettes. IV. The difficulties affecting information technology integrated into English instruction are lack of time, no ability to integrating information technology into English instruction, lack of trainings, and information literacy. Based on the conclusion of this study, some suggestions are made for future study.

Orienting Arthur Waley : Japonisme, Orientalism and the creation of Japanese literature in English

This dissertation examines the principal Japanese translations of Arthur Waley (1889-1966): Japanese Poetry: The Uta (1919), The No Plays of Japan (1921), and The Tale of Genji (1925-33). These works have been overlooked as English literature of the British modern period, although Waley intended most of his translations to function as modern English literature. I include a short biography of Waley's formative years and maintain that aspects of his identity—Jewish, bisexual, and socialist—were important in the choice of his occupation and in the selection and interpretation of his texts. I situate Japanese culture in the context of orientalism and Anglo-Japanese political relations. Japanese culture had a role to play in Anglo-Japanese imperialisms; this is demonstrated through an examination of the activities of the Japan Society of London, where Waley presented one of his first translations. The School of Oriental Studies in London also provided a platform for the translation and dissemination of Asian literature for the express purpose of promoting British imperial interests in the Far East. As an orientalist working through these institutions and the British Museum, Waley's positioning of himself as a Bloomsbury anti-imperialist was ambiguous. His texts, moreover, had a role to play in the presentation of Japan as an essentially aesthetic, 'feminine' nation. There are few letters, and no diaries or working papers of Waley. I rely, therefore, on his published works, as well as the memoirs, letters and biographies of family members and friends, especially those of the Bloomsbury Group with which he was associated. I make extensive use of the Transactions of the Japan Society and historical records of the School of Oriental Studies, as well as critical reviews of Waley and other translators. Social and cultural histories of the period are used to construct key. contexts: the Anglo-Jews, the Cambridge Fabians, British orientalism, and English modernism between the wars. Since I maintain that homoeroticism in Japanese literature was one of its attractions for Waley, I also look to queer theory to assist in my reading of Waley's texts. I conclude that The Tale of Genji enabled Waley to realize a personal ambition to write stories, and he produced a unique English novel that remains not only the most important modernist interpretation of Japanese culture between the wars, but a remarkable record of Edwardian-Bloomsbury language and aesthetic sensibility.
